Transport in Afghanistan has steadily improved in the last decade. Much of the nation's road network was built during the 1960s but left to ruin during the 1980s and 90s wars. New national highways, roads, and bridges have been rebuilt in the last decade to help increase travel as well as trade with neighboring countries. Gardez City in Paktia Province, Afghanistan

Gardez is the capital of the Paktia Province of Afghanistan. The population of the city was estimated to be ca. 10,000 in the 1979 census and was estimated to be 70,000 in 2008. The majority of the city's native population is Tajik. But recently, with the migration of Pashtun tribes from different parts of Paktia to this city, Pashtuns have taken over the majority of the population of this city. The city of Gardez is located at the junction between two important roads that cut through a huge alpine valley. Surrounded by the mountains and deserts of the Hindu Kush, which boil up from the valley floor to the north, east and west, it is the axis of commerce for a huge area of eastern Afghanistan and has been a strategic location for armies throughout the country's long history of conflict. Observation posts built by Alexander the Great are still crumbling on the hilltops just outside the city limits. The city of Gardez has a population of 70,641. It has 13 districts and a total land area of 6,174 hectares (23.84 sq mi). The total number of dwellings in this city is 7,849.

Forming part of the larger Loya Paktia region, Paktia Province is divided into 15 districts and has a population of roughly 623,000, which is mostly a tribal society living in rural areas. It serves as one of the nation's main international airports and as one of the largest military bases, capable of housing over one hundred aircraft. It was locally named as Khwaja Rawash Airport, though it continues to be officially known by some airlines by the latter name. The airport was renamed in 2014 in honor of former President Hamid Karzai. The decision was made by the National Assembly of Afghanistan and the Cabinet of the then President Ashraf Ghani. It was renamed to its current name in 2021 by the Taliban.

Sheghnan Airport

Sheghnan Airport is located in the extreme northeast section of Afghanistan deep within Pamir mountain ranges in the Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan. The airport is close to the border with Tajikistan; to the east and parallel of the Shighnan airport is Khorog Airport in Tajikistan. These two airports are only 2,000 feet (0.6 km) apart and are separated by a river.

Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport

Mazar-i-Sharif International Airport, also known as Mawlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī International Airport, is located 9 km east of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, a journey of 15 minutes by taxi from the center of the city. It has a dual-runway capable of handling large aircraft such as Boeing 747, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and Antonov An-225. The airport has facilities for up to 1,000 passengers, making it one of the largest airports in Afghanistan.

Jalalabad Airport

Jalalabad Airport is located 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Jalalabad city in Afghanistan. It has long been used for military and emergency relief purposes. It is currently maintained by the Taliban, although they do not possess or maintain an air force as of the time the airport was captured from the Afghan Air Force in the 2021 Taliban offensive. The airport was heavily used in the past by the United States Armed Forces and civilian contractors. They operated out of Forward Operating Base Fenty. Members of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Resolute Support Mission (RSM) also used the airport in the past.

Bost Airport is an airport serving Lashkargah, a city in Helmand Province in Afghanistan. It is located on the east bank of the Helmand River, 5 miles (8 km) north of its junction with the Arghandab River. It is also 75 miles (121 km) west of Kandahar.
