Goni Modu Zanna Bura was elected Senator for the Yobe East constituency of Yobe State,Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic,running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999. [1] After taking his seat in the Senate in June 1999 he was appointed to committees on Ethics,Environment,Health,State &Local Government and Government Affairs. [2] He was a contender to be PDP candidate for Yobe State Governor in the 2003 elections. [3]

The 2023 Yobe State gubernatorial election will take place on 11 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Yobe State,concurrent with elections to the Yobe State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election will be held two weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Mai Mala Buni is eligible to run for re-election,but has not yet stated whether he will do so.
