In the Philippines, provinces are one of its primary political and administrative divisions. There are 82 provinces at present, which are further subdivided into component cities and municipalities. The local government units in the National Capital Region, as well as independent cities, are independent of any provincial government. Each province is governed by an elected legislature called the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and an elected governor.
Leyte is an island in the Visayas group of islands in the Philippines. It is eighth-largest and sixth-most populous island in the Philippines, with a total population of 2,626,970 as of 2020 census.
Leyte, officially the Province of Leyte, is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region occupying the northern three-quarters of Leyte Island. Eastern Visayas is an administrative region in the Philippines, designated as Region VIII. It consists of three main islands: Samar, Leyte, and Biliran. The region has six provinces: Biliran, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, one independent city, Ormoc, and one highly urbanized city, Tacloban. The highly urbanized city of Tacloban is the sole regional center. These provinces and cities occupy the easternmost islands of the Visayas group of islands, hence the region's name. Some historians believe that the oldest ancient kingdom in the Philippines is found in this region, the Lakanate of Lawan, which plays a significant role in the Polynesian and Austronesian intermigration.
The Leyte Provincial Capitol was the seat of government of the Philippine province of Leyte until 2019. The historic building situated in Tacloban also served as the temporary national capitol in 1944 to 1945 during the World War II era.
Leopoldo Dominico Loreto Petilla is a Filipino politician from the province of Leyte in the Philippines. He has served as Governor of Leyte from 2013 until 2022. He was first elected as Governor of the province in 2013 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2019.He is the son of former Leyte Governors Leopoldo Petilla Sr. (1992-1995) and Remedios Petilla (1995-2004). His older brother, Jericho Petilla is the former Secretary of Energy (2012–2015) and preceded and succeeded him as governor of Leyte
Damian Gaviola Mercado is a Filipino politician from the province of Southern Leyte in the Philippines. He currently serves as the Governor of Southern Leyte since 2016 and previously from 2007 to 2013. He also served as representative of the province from 2013 to 2016 and Mayor of Maasin from 1998 to 2007.
The governor of Biliran is the local chief executive of the Philippine province of Biliran. The governor holds office at the Biliran Provincial Capitol located at Brgy. Calumpang, Naval, Biliran. Like all local government heads in the Philippines, the governor is elected via popular vote, and may not be elected for a fourth consecutive term. In case of death, resignation or incapacity, the vice governor becomes the governor.
