Henry S. (Hank) Heifetz (born May 20, 1935) is an American poet, novelist, documentarian, critic, and translator. He has published poems in various collections and journals, one novel, critical writings on film and other topics, numerous translations of Spanish to English, and translations of ancient Sanskrit and Tamil poetry into American English verse. His translation of Kalidasa's "Kumarasambhavam," entitled "The Origin of the Young God", was selected as one of the twenty-five best books of the year by the Village Voice in 1990. [1] Heifetz has lived and traveled extensively in India, Latin America, Europe, and Turkey, and he has translated works in several languages, including Spanish, Tamil, and Sanskrit. He has taught writing, translation, film, literature, and Indian studies at universities including Yale University, Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, City University of New York (CUNY), San Jose State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has recently completed a new novel and a collection of his own poetry for publication as well as working on a poetic translation of a Sanskrit epic poem.
Henry Saul (Hank) Heifetz was born May 20, 1935, in the Dorchester-Mattapan area of Boston, Massachusetts, a working-class Jewish neighborhood. Henry and his older brother, Leonard, were the children of Lithuanian immigrants, Edward, a vegetable-truck driver and Dina (Heller), a homemaker. Heifetz graduated from Boston Latin School and was the first member of his immediate family to go to college, attending Harvard University with a full scholarship. In 1957 he married Natasha Alpert, with whom he had two children, a son, Aaron, and a daughter, Samara. He graduated from Harvard in 1959 (class of 1957) with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa cum Laude, in English and American Literature. After graduation, Heifetz was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and traveled to Europe where he studied and taught for three years before returning to the United States and settling in New York City in 1962. In New York he began his first novel, "Where Are the Stars in New York?", [2] which he completed after moving to California in 1968. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he completed a master's degree in South and Southeast Asian studies in 1979. In 1983 Heifetz received a PhD with distinction in South Asian studies, with an emphasis on Sanskrit and Tamil, from the University of California, Berkeley. After completing his doctoral degree, Heifetz taught in the Department of South Asian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It was there that he met Mira (Reym) Binford, a filmmaker and academic, who became and remains his life partner. They now divide their time between New York City and Hamden, Connecticut.
Heifetz has published many literary translations of articles, poems, and books. Among his numerous translations of poetry from Sanskrit and Tamil to English, his version of Kalidasa's "Kumarasambhavam," "The Origin of the Young God", [3] is considered an unparalleled accomplishment. Geoffrey O'Brien wrote in the Village Voice, "The most exciting book of new poetry I've read in the last several years is a translation of a 1600-year-old Sanskrit epic. Hank Heifetz has had the audacity to take on a formally elaborate, densely allusive masterpiece in which rhythm, assonance, and wordplay are crucial--and the gift to make American poetry out of it." [4] The poem, probably composed about AD 400, is considered the greatest long poem in classical Sanskrit. It is the love story of Shiva and Parvati, the god and the goddess, who are viewed as lovers and as cosmic principles. [5] In an article in the Journal of South Asian Literature, John E. Cort noted that a new approach to translating Sanskrit poetry into English is "best exemplified in Hank Heifetz's excellent translation of Kalidasa's Kumarasambhavam, 'The Origin of the Young God', a translation which marks a new departure for translations of Sanskrit into English, and should remain a model for all translators for decades." [6] Poet Robert Creeley wrote of "The Origin of the Young God", "This remarkable translation...holds its active authority as poetry throughout...an exceptional literary accomplishment." [7]
Heifetz's translations of classical Tamil poetry, in collaboration with the distinguished scholar of Tamil, George L. Hart, include major works previously untranslated as poetry to poetry. "The Four Hundred Songs of War and Wisdom", [8] for instance, had been previously translated into English prose, but with the participation of Heifetz, the new translation retained the work's poetic form and beauty. In 2002, Heifetz and Hart were awarded the A. K. Ramanujan Book Prize, [9] in recognition of the quality of their translation. George Hart's "Poets of the Tamil Anthologies: Ancient Poems of Love and War", [10] for which Heifetz was a poetic advisor, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Translation in 1980. On the translation by Heifetz and Hart of "The Forest Book of the Ramayana of Kampan", noted scholar of Tamil, Kamil Zvelebil wrote: "A translation that conveys the sense of the Tamil original as one of the great masterpieces of world literature fills us with admiration and gratitude...(a) penetrating knowledge of the original text coupled with genuine poetic inspiration." Heifetz has also worked on poetically revising translations from the Telugu language done by Professor Velcheru Narayana Rao, including from the Kalahastisvara Satakamu . [12] [13]
In addition to the translations of Indian poetry, Heifetz has translated many articles and books from Spanish to English. Working with the Mexican intellectual, Enrique Krauze, Heifetz translated a series of articles by Krauze for The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, and others. (See External Links)
Heifetz also acted as translator, editor and reviser of two books by Krauze, "Mexico: Biography of Power", [14] and "Redeemers: Ideas and Power in Latin America". [15] "Mexico: Biography of Power" was recently included in a list of the best non-fiction books of all time selected by New York Times staff writers. [16]
In addition to his translations of poetry, Heifetz has written and published a number of his own poems. His poetry has appeared in such publications as Evergreen Review, [17] the Village Voice [18] and Masks. [19] A collection of his poems, entitled "Lightyears", was published in 2019 by the publishing house Editorial Clio in Mexico City. [20]
His novel, "Where Are the Stars in New York?", [21] was described by novelist Sol Yurick as, "a stunning evocation of an American rebellion... A surreal-real drama... first-rate art and politics." [22] After years of writing in other forms, Heifetz has completed another novel, "Business as Usual Under the Stars," and he has begun writing a new work of fiction.
Heifetz has also written numerous articles and reviews of books and films for Cineaste (magazine), the Village Voice, The Journal of Asian Studies, Letras Libres, and other publications.
Heifetz has always had an interest in films. In the early 1960s, together with his colleague Norman Fruchter, Heifetz broadcast a weekly one-hour radio program of film criticism on WBAI-FM in New York. He was a juror for the American Film Festival in the 1980s, and for the Annual CableACE Awards in the 1990s. He has been writer and translator for several documentaries, and he has written many film reviews and articles. (See External Links)
He was co-writer of the prize-winning documentary, "Diamonds in the Snow", completed in 1994. "Diamonds in the Snow" portrays Holocaust history through the microcosm of a town in Poland, where a few Jewish girls were rescued from the Nazis by Christians who risked their own lives to save the children of strangers. This moving film was broadcast on PBS in 1995; it has been shown at numerous film festivals and has aired internationally in English, German, and Spanish versions.
From 1996 to 2001, Heifetz worked in Mexico City as Creative Director of the television series "Mexico: Siglo XX" (Mexico: 20th Century), which began airing on Televisa in April 1998. Renamed "Mexico: Nuevo Siglo" (Mexico: New Century) at the beginning of 2001, this has been a highly innovative and successful documentary series on Mexican history, society, and culture. In conjunction with Executive Producer Enrique Krauze and teams selected for each program, Heifetz directed the production of more than 120 television programs. He is credited with initiating a new approach for the television documentary in Mexico. [23] (See External Links) The award-winning series has aired weekly throughout the Mexican Republic on Televisa and programs have also been broadcast on PBS in the United States. The New York Times described "Mexico: Siglo XX" as, "...an uncensored panorama of their country in the 20th Century unlike anything ever displayed on Mexican television." [24]

Kālidāsa was a Classical Sanskrit author who is often considered ancient India's greatest poet and playwright. His plays and poetry are primarily based on Hindu Puranas and philosophy. His surviving works consist of three plays, two epic poems and two shorter poems.
Ṛtusaṃhāra, often written Ritusamhara, is a medium length Sanskrit poem.
Indian epic poetry is the epic poetry written in the Indian subcontinent, traditionally called Kavya. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata, which were originally composed in Sanskrit and later translated into many other Indian languages, and the Five Great Epics of Tamil literature and Sangam literature are some of the oldest surviving epic poems ever written.
The Ramavataram, popularly referred to as Kamba Ramayanam, is a Tamil epic that was written by the Tamil poet Kambar during the 12th century. Based on Valmiki's Ramayana, the story describes the legend of King Rama of Ayodhya. However, the Ramavataram is different from the Sanskrit version in many aspects – both in spiritual concepts and in the specifics of the storyline. This historic work is considered by both Tamil scholars and the general public as one of the greatest literary works in Tamil literature.
George Luzerne Hart, III is Professor Emeritus of Tamil language at the University of California, Berkeley. His work focuses on the classical Tamil literature and on identifying the relationships between the Tamil and Sanskrit literature. In 2015 the Government of India awarded him the title of Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour.
Telugu literature is the body of works written in the Telugu language. It consists of poems, short stories, novels, plays, and song lyrics, among others. There is some indication that Telugu literature dates at least to the middle of the first millennium, the first extant works are from the 11th century when the Mahabharata was first translated to Telugu from Sanskrit by Nannaya. The language has experienced a golden age under the patronage of the Vijayanagara Emperor-Poet Krishnadevaraya.
The Purananuru, sometimes called Puram or Purappattu, is a classical Tamil poetic work and traditionally the last of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthokai) in the Sangam literature. It is a collection of 400 heroic poems about kings, wars and public life, of which two are lost and a few have survived into the modern age in fragments. The collected poems were composed by 157 poets, of which 14 were anonymous and at least 10 were women. This anthology has been variously dated between 1st century BCE and 5th century CE, with Kamil Zvelebil, a Tamil literature scholar, dating predominantly all of the poems of Purananuru sometime between 2nd and 5th century CE. Nevertheless, few poems are dated to the period of 1st century BCE.
Attipate Krishnaswami Ramanujan was an Indian poet and scholar of Indian literature and linguistics. Ramanujan was also a professor of Linguistics at University of Chicago.
The Sangam literature, historically known as 'the poetry of the noble ones', connotes the early classical Tamil literature and is the earliest known literature of South India. The Tamil tradition and legends link it to three legendary literary gatherings around Madurai and Kapāṭapuram: the first lasted over 4,440 years, the second over 3,700 years, and the third over 1,850 years. Scholars consider this Tamil tradition-based chronology as ahistorical and mythical. Most scholars suggest the historical Sangam literature era, also called the Sangam period, spanned from c. 300 BCE to 300 CE, while others variously place this early classical Tamil literature period a bit later and more narrowly but all before 300 CE. According to Kamil Zvelebil, a Tamil literature and history scholar, the most acceptable range for the Sangam literature is 100 BCE to 250 CE, based on the linguistic, prosodic and quasi-historic allusions within the texts and the colophons.
Ainkurunuru is a classical Tamil poetic work and traditionally the third of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthokai) in the Sangam literature. It is divided into five groups of 100 short stanzas of 3 to 6 lines, each hundred subdivided into 10s, or pattu. The five groups are based on tinai (landscapes): riverine, sea coast, mountain, arid and pastoral. According to Martha Selby, the love poems in Ainkurunuru are generally dated from about the late-2nd-to-3rd-century-CE. According to Takanobu Takahashi – a Tamil literature scholar, these poems were likely composed between 300 and 350 CE based on the linguistic evidence, while Kamil Zvelebil – another Tamil literature scholar – suggests the Ainkurunuru poems were composed by 210 CE, with some of the poems dated to 100 BCE.
The Patiṟṟuppattu is a classical Tamil poetic work and one of the Eight Anthologies (Ettuthokai) in Sangam literature. A panegyric collection, it contains puram poems. The Chera kings, known as the Cheramal, are the centre of the work. Its invocatory poem is about Mayon, or Perumal (Vishnu).
Kumārasambhavam is an epic poem by Kālidāsa. It is widely regarded as the finest work of Kalidasa as well as the greatest kāvya poem in Classical Sanskrit. The style of description of spring set the standard for nature metaphors pervading many centuries of Indian literary tradition. Kumārasaṃbhavam basically talks about the birth of Kumāra (Kārtikeya), the son of Shiva (Śiva) and Pārvatī (Umā). The period of composition is uncertain, although Kalidasa is thought to have lived in the 5th century.
In South Indian traditions, Kannappa is a devotee of the Hindu god Shiva. He is a saint in the Tamil Shaiva tradition, and his story is narrated in the Periya Puranam, a 12th-century Tamil hagiography. Kannappa's story is also narrated in the Kalahastisvara Satakamu by Dhurjati and the Basava Purana in Telugu as well as the Ragalegalu by Harihara in Kannada.
Bhaṭṭikāvya is a Sanskrit-language poem dating from the 7th century CE, in the formal genre of the "great poem" (mahākāvya). It focuses on two deeply rooted Sanskrit traditions, the Ramayana and Panini's grammar, while incorporating numerous other traditions, in a rich mix of science and art, poetically retelling the adventures of Rama and a compendium of examples of grammar and rhetoric. As literature, it is often considered to withstand comparison with the best of Sanskrit poetry.
In Tamil poetics, tinai is a type of poetical mode or theme. A thinai consists of a complete poetical landscape - a definite time, place, season in which the poem is set - and background elements characteristic of that landscape - including flora and fauna, inhabitants, deities and social organisation. These collectively provide imagery for extended poetic metaphors, which set the mood of the poem.
David Dean Shulman is an Israeli Indologist, poet and peace activist, known for his work on the history of religion in South India, Indian poetics, Tamil Islam, Dravidian linguistics, and Carnatic music. Bilingual in Hebrew and English, he has mastered Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, and reads Greek, Russian, French, German, Persian, Arabic and Malayalam. He was formerly Professor of Indian Studies and Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and professor in the now defunct Department of Indian, Iranian and Armenian Studies. Presently he holds a chair as Renee Lang Professor of Humanistic Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He has been a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities since 1988.

Velcheru Narayana Rao is an Indian author, critic, and literary translator. He is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the Department of South Asian Studies. His work is primarily focused on Telugu literature for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour conferred by Sahitya Akademi, in February 2021.
