In Saurashtra, a young Michael's mania for superheroes instigates him to murder his own parents, who oppose his obsession. Years later, Michael, an admired superhero, now christens himself as "Mega Man" and thwarts a burglary attempt and slays the robbers. He recruits the assistance of his friend, Siri Vennela's innovations, but yearns to possess a power that would make him a real and formidable superhero.
Lord Indra's assault on an infant Hanuman to deter his attempts of feeding on the Sun God terminated in the spilling of his divine blood, a drop of which plunged into the sea and eventually progressed into a holy gem. Situated on a sea shore, Anjanadri, a dystopian hamlet, is agonized under the tyranny of the polygar, Gajapathi. Hanumanthu, a petty thief in Anjanadri, has a huge crush on Meenakshi, a doctor and the local school head master's granddaughter. She constantly combats Gajapathi's despotism, prompting him to oppress the rebellion in the village and launch a false bandit attack on Meenakshi; Hanumanthu manages to avert the ambush and rescue Meenakshi, but is severely wounded and thrown into the sea. He discovers the gem and acquires it, while Meenakshi pines to uncover the identity of her savior, who has been aiding her since their childhood but does not expose himself.
Hanumanthu is found unconscious on the shore with serious wounds, but miraculously recuperates due to the gem, surprising his elder sister, Anjamma, and best friend, Kasi. As a result of coming into contact with the gem and owning it, he attains exceptional superpowers. While Hanumanthu's efforts to win over Meenakshi humorously fail, he revels in his newfound superpowers and confides in Kasi. Meenakshi confronts Gajapathi for compelling an aged farmer to attempt suicide and he challengers her to a customary kusthi match. Hanumanthu comes forward to represent Meenakshi against Gajapathi, and defeats him in the match. He is recruited to be the polygar, but disagrees with the villagers and proposes democratic elections to decide the new leader, impressing Meenakshi. Out of nowhere, Michael and Siri arrive at Anjanadri under the pretext of corporate social responsibility and offer to construct a hospital.
It is revealed that Michael had found out about Hanumanthu's newly-acquired superpowers through a social media clip and desires to uncover the root cause of his capabilities. He fabricates a crane collapse to provoke Hanumanthu into using his powers, but fails to discern the reason behind them. Hanumanthu realizes Anjamma's unconditional love for him through Kasi's grandmother and repents hurting her with his conduct; he undertakes the household's responsibility and arranges her wedding. Siri later abducts Hanumanthu for the information pertaining to his powers and threatens him to disclose the details, while Michael uncovers the gem's potential and tries cautioning Siri, but the latter does not pay any heed. Hanumanthu fools Siri and breaks free to rescue Meenakshi from hooligans sent after her by Gajapathi; he professes his feelings to her, reveals that he had been her saviour, and discloses about the gem and his powers.
Hanumanthu breaks into Michael's caravan, while the latter leaves Siri, an asthma patient, to succumb to his asthma attack when he refuses to stand by his hazardous conspiracies to acquire the gem. Michael's men strike Hanumanthu, but an elderly sage, disguising himself as Hanumanthu, pounces on the goons and rescues him. On Anjamma's wedding day, Michael accuses Hanumanthu of robbing him of his money and an ancestral gem; upon Anjamma's instructions, Hanumanthu returns the gem, but it turns out to be made of a magnifying glass that damages Michael's eye and exposes his true colours. As Hanumanthu divulges to the villagers about the gem, Michael instructs his henchmen to kill him, but Anjamma fights for her brother and takes a bullet in the process, killing her. Frustrated with the gem's inability to rescue Anjamma due to the sunset, Hanumanthu throws it away and tearfully cremates her, while Michael releases a toxic smoke through drones into the village to slowly decimate it and obtain the gem. Discovering his plot, Meenakshi rushes to seek Hanumanthu out, but he distrusts himself with the responsibility of rescuing the village.
The elderly sage interrupts their conversation, and discloses himself to be Vibhishana. Vibhishana reveals to Hanumanthu and Meenakshi, that Hanumanthu's powers are exactly of those of Lord Hanuman, and explains his presence in Hanumanthu's life ever since he acquired the gem. With newfound motivation, Hanumanthu decides to obliterate Michael. Siri, who was rescued by Hanumanthu, undergoes a change of heart and persuades Gajapathi and his men to help Hanumanthu for Anjanadri and tries deactivating the drones. Hanumanthu, Gajapathi, and the latter's men battle Michael and his henchmen. A monkey calling himself as "Koti", assists Hanumanthu by getting him the gem, who then manages to destroy the drones, desisting the release of smoke. However, Michael obtains the gem through his new "Mega Man" suit, but cannot stop Hanumanthu with his power. He finally attempts to destroy Anjanadri from his helicopter; Hanumanthu resists him and explodes the helicopter, killing Michael and destroying the gem for good, however, the blood drop inculcates itself permanently into Hanumanthu.
While Vibhishana anticipates a tremendous battle with the Asuras, Lord Hanuman emerges out of a cave in the Himalayas and appears before Hanumanthu. Vibhishana recounts a promise made by Lord Hanuman to Lord Rama and declares that the time for him to stand by his oath has finally come, paving way to the sequel, Jai HanuMan.

"Superhero is a genre that I always wanted to do, but it needs a certain kind of budget. So then I decided that I’ll make a superhero film. Then, around that time, there were a lot of things that were going in my life, and the name of Hanuman ji kept happening around me. I started hearing Hanuman ji a lot in my life. So, I think, subconsciously, I don’t know what has happened, I’ve named the film HanuMan, and I thought it would be really nice if some normal kid like me gets the powers of Hanuman ji."
— Prasanth Varma, on the origin of the film. [56]
HanuMan is blend of sci-fi, fantasy and mythology. [57] The film, featuring Teja Sajja as the titular character, revolves around Hanumanthu, a small-time thief, and his journey to save his village and the world after discovering a totem that enhances his abilities. [58] Varma said he was taught itihas as a subject in school, and was very passionate about those stories, and those characters inspired him to make the film. As he felt he is not mature enough or big enough director to make films on itihas, he started from doing a superhero film, where a normal boy gets powers of Lord Hanuman, from there on down, maybe mature to direct those big stories. [59] In an interview, he said "I always wanted to do a superhero film. In fact, I wanted to become a superhero! Since I couldn’t do that I thought, let me make a film. I didn’t want it to be a Marvel or DC-like superhero film but something indigenous and culturally rooted. The first thought that came to mind was Hanuman ji and I wrote the story. Then I got multiple ideas for various superheroes based on our itihaas and it took off from there." [60]
The film borrows elements from Indian mythology, mostly from the Ramayana and the depictions of Lord Hanuman and his exploits in the various oral and written traditions of Hinduism. DNA India wrote "despite the vociferous proclamations of Jai Shri Ram and songs borrowing lyrics from popular bhajans, HanuMan is not a religious film. It is a superhero film that uses mythology and religious elements, blending them with science and spirituality quite neatly." [61] Varma said he didn’t view this film as a mythological tale and it would have presented him many new challenges. The film is set in a modern-day world blended with a key incident from Hanuman’s life. The film idea was born out of a small story related to Hanuman and it will leave audience thoroughly satisfied with the visualisation of the character, like how we have imagined him since childhood. We worked on the character sketches alone for a year. [62] Varma revealed that he narrated the story to lyricist Siva Shakthi Datta for his guidance. [63]
India Today 's Sana Farzeen notes, "Hanumanth attains superpowers, giving him the way to win his ladylove's heart. However, the catch is, just like Koi... Mil Gaya 's Jaadu, the power or Lord Hanuman's 'mani' can help him only when the sun is up." She also notes "fictional world of Anjanadri, a land that looks like a beta version of Mahishmati ( Baahubali ). A huge statue of Hanuman adorns the location as a prelude to all that is set to follow." [64] About choosing the fictional village Anjanadri, Varma said "If Gotham is based on New York City, Anjanadri, which is also the name of Hanumanthudu's birthplace, is an island in Andhra Pradesh, somewhat like Yanam." Director gained inspiration from Minnal Murali (2021) and Krrish (2006). [65] [66]
The film has ample references to pop The film has ample references to pop culture elements, Spider-Man, Superman and Batman. [61] [64] The film pays tribute to Telugu superstars such as Prabhas, Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan, Allu Arjun, and Nandamuri Balakrishna. [67] The film also has scenes referring Baahubali (2015), Athadu (2005), Arya (2004) and Pushpa (2021). [68]
