James Patrick "Jimmy" O'Neill Jr. is an American police officer who served as the 43rd Police Commissioner of New York City from September 2016 until November 2019. Prior to his appointment as Police Commissioner,O'Neill served as NYPD's Chief of Department,the highest uniformed position in the department,in 2014–2016.
In a meeting with the Mayor Bill de Blasio of October 31,2019 O'Neill confirmed his intentions to depart the NYPD. On November 4,2019 it was publicly announced that Dermot F. Shea would become the 44th Commissioner of the NYPD in a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza on December 1,2019.
On November 6,2019,O'Neill announced that he had accepted a position as Senior Vice President of Physical Security for the payments firm Visa. On April 1,2020,it was announced that O'Neill would be appointed as an advisor to the New York City government on COVID-19. [2]
O'Neill was born to an Irish American family,the fourth of seven children,to Helen and Joseph O'Neill. He was raised in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. [3] He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and a Master of Public Administration degree from John Jay College in New York City. [4]
O'Neill joined the New York City Transit Police in 1983,and began his career as a patrolman in Transit District 1. He was promoted to Sergeant in September 1987 and to Lieutenant in April 1991. In 1995,the transit police were merged into the NYPD. In 1997 he was promoted to Captain. Additional promotions were to Deputy Inspector in December 2001,to Inspector in August 2003,and to Deputy Chief in October 2005. On June 2,2014,O'Neill was promoted to Chief of Patrol. Several months later,in November 2014,he was promoted to Chief of Department. In September 2016 he became police commissioner. On November 4,2019,O'Neill resigned his post as Police Commissioner (effective early December 2019) and was replaced by former Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.
On October 28,2014,O'Neill became the Chief of Department for the NYPD's 36,000 uniformed officers,the highest-ranking uniformed position. [5]
On August 2,2016,O'Neill was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City by Mayor Bill de Blasio,effective September 2016. [6] O'Neill was succeeded as Chief of Department by Carlos M. Gomez. On November 4,2019,O'Neill announced his retirement as commissioner,and was replaced by former Chief of Detectives Dermot F. Shea at month-end. [7]
O'Neill widely deployed vapor wake canines in the city to alert their handlers to the presence of explosives;these dogs can then track the scent to potential bombers. [8] [9]
The New York City Transit Police Department was a law enforcement agency in New York City that existed from 1953 to 1995,and is currently part of the NYPD. The roots of this organization go back to 1936 when Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia authorized the hiring of special patrolmen for the New York City Subway. These patrolmen eventually became officers of the Transit Police. In 1949,the department was officially divorced from the New York City Police Department,but was eventually fully re-integrated in 1995 as the Transit Bureau of the New York City Police Department by New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American businessman and former law enforcement officer who served two non-consecutive tenures as the New York City Police Commissioner and currently one of only two NYPD commissioners being so(the other is Raymond Kelly). He previously served as the Commissioner of the Boston Police Department (BPD) (1993–1994) and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) (2002–2009). He is the only person to have led the police departments of the United States' two largest cities –New York and Los Angeles.

The Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York (PBA) is the largest police union representing police officers of the New York City Police Department. It represents about 24,000 of the department's 36,000 officers.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is structured into numerous bureaus and units. As a whole,the NYPD is headed by the Police Commissioner,a civilian administrator appointed by the Mayor,with the senior sworn uniformed officer of the service titled "Chief of Department". Philip Banks III is the current Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety and a retired law enforcement officer who served as NYPD chief of department in 2013 and 2014. As chief of department,Banks oversaw all patrol and specialty units. His brother,David C. Banks,has been appointed as New York City Schools Chancellor.

On December 20,2014,Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley shot and killed Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu — two on-duty New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers — in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. Brinsley then fled into the New York City Subway,where he killed himself. Earlier in the day,before he killed Ramos and Liu,Brinsley had shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend Shaneka Thompson in Baltimore after initially pointing the gun at his own head.

A native of Cuba who emigrated to the United States as a young boy with his father,Gomez grew up in the New York City borough of Queens. He was designated Chief of Department of the NYPD on September 16,2016. The Chief of Department is the highest uniformed position,and Gomez was the 39th person to hold this post becoming the highest ranking Hispanic officer in the department.

Dermot Francis Shea is a retired American police officer who was the 44th New York City Police Commissioner. He assumed the position on December 1,2019,and was sworn in by Mayor Bill de Blasio in a public ceremony on December 2.
The Sergeants Benevolent Association(SBA) is an American police union that represents the sergeants of the New York City Police Department (NYPD),while the department's nonsupervisory patrol officers are represented by the larger Police Benevolent Association. George Floyd protests in New York City took place at several sites in each of the five New York City boroughs,starting on May 28,2020,in reaction to the murder of George Floyd. Most of the protests were peaceful,while some sites experienced protester and/or police violence,including several high-profile incidents of excessive force. Looting became a parallel issue,especially in Manhattan. As a result,and amid the COVID-19 pandemic,the city was placed under curfew from June 1–7,the first curfew in the city since 1943.

Before the appointment of Keechant Sewell as New York City Police Commissioner on January 1,2022,Holmes was the highest-ranking female in the NYPD.
Keechant L. Sewell is an American baseball executive and former police officer and administrator. Sewell is currently the New York Mets Senior Vice President of Security and Guest Experience. She previously served as the 45th New York City Police Commissioner,the first woman and third black person to serve in the position. On June 12,2023,Sewell announced that she was stepping down as commissioner. No reason was given for her departure.
