Thomas G. Donlon is an American law enforcement officer. On September 13,2024,Donlon,a Bronx native,served as the New York City Police Commissioner following the resignation of Edward Caban. [1] [2] He was the third police commissioner to serve under New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Growing up in the Bronx,Donlon attended Iona University in New Rochelle where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. [3]
Donlon was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),where he was in charge of their National Threat Center. He put together the FBI's "Guardian" system,a centralized terror threat database and "managed the FBI’s Terrorism Watch List." He also ran the FBI/NYPD Joint Terrorism Task Force [4] and served as Assistant Special Agent in charge of the FBI's New York Counter-terrorism Division. As a special agent,he was assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force-JTTF in the FBI's New York City office,where he was assigned to share the responsibility of investigating the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. That investigation led to five federal court convictions. [5]
After retiring from the FBI,Donlon was a global security director at two financial corporations. Between 2009 and 2010,he served as the Director of New York's Office of Homeland Security. [6]
In 2020,Donlon founded a security firm called Global Security Resolutions. [7] The company produced an event series called Focus Under Pressure that featured Joe Pistone,a former FBI agent who went undercover to investigate organized crime. [8] [9]
Donlon was sworn in as New York City Police Commissioner on September 13,2024. [10]
On September 20,2024,just over a week into his tenure,several of his homes were raided by the FBI. [11] [12] In response to the raid,Donlon noted that the FBI "took materials that came into my possession approximately 20 years ago and are unrelated to my work with the New York City Police Department." He further noted that since the matter is not an NYPD matter,the department would not be commenting on it. [13]

Kelly was the first man to rise from Police Cadet to Police Commissioner,holding all of the department's ranks,except for Three-Star Bureau Chief,Chief of Department and Deputy Commissioner,having been promoted directly from Two-Star Chief to First Deputy Commissioner in 1990. After his handling of the World Trade Center bombing in 1993,he was mentioned for the first time as a possible candidate for FBI Director. After Kelly turned down the position,Louis Freeh was appointed.

The New York City Police Commissioner is the head of the New York City Police Department and presiding member of the Board of Commissioners. On the morning of March 6,2008,an unknown individual placed a small bomb in front of a United States Armed Forces recruiting station in Times Square,located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. There were no injuries. A security camera shows the bomber riding a bicycle as he approaches the station,dismounting the bike and planting the bomb,and then speeding off shortly before the blast.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is structured into numerous bureaus and units. As a whole,the NYPD is headed by the Police Commissioner,a civilian administrator appointed by the Mayor,with the senior sworn uniformed officer of the service titled "Chief of Department". The Police Commissioner appoints the First Deputy Commissioner as the department's second-in-command and the Chief of Department as the department's highest ranking uniformed officer. The commissioner also appoints a number of deputy and assistant commissioners who do not have operational command and are solely for support and administrative function. Throughout the history of the New York City Police Department,numerous instances of corruption,misconduct,and other allegations of such,have occurred. Over 12,000 cases resulted in lawsuit settlements totaling over $400 million during a five-year period ending in 2014. In 2019,misconduct lawsuits cost the taxpayer $68,688,423,a 76 percent increase over the previous year,including about $10 million paid out to two exonerated individuals who had been falsely convicted and imprisoned.
On October 23,2014,a hatchet-wielding man,Zale H. Thompson,attacked four New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers on a crowded sidewalk in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens in New York City. Officer Kenneth Healey was struck in the head,while Officer Joseph Meeker was injured in the arm. Also injured was a female civilian,who was struck by a stray bullet when two other officers shot and killed the perpetrator. Investigators discovered that Thompson was a recent Muslim convert. His attack was classified as an act of terrorism.

Keechant L. Sewell is an American baseball executive and former police officer and administrator. Sewell is currently the New York Mets Senior Vice President of Security and Guest Experience. She previously served as the 45th New York City Police Commissioner,the first woman and third black person to serve in the position. On June 12,2023,Sewell announced that she was stepping down as commissioner. No reason was given for her departure.
Edward A. Caban is an American police officer who served as the New York City Police Commissioner from 2023 to 2024,having been appointed by Mayor Eric Adams,and resigning amidst federal corruption investigations into the Eric Adams administration. He was the first Latino to serve as Commissioner of the NYPD.
There have been several investigations into the Eric Adams administration since he became Mayor of New York City in 2022.
