Chauncey Parker (born August 16,1960) currently serves as the Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety under Mayor Eric Adams. [1] [2] He formerly served as the Assistant Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety [3] and Deputy Commissioner for Collaborative Policing for the New York City Police Department. [4] He is also (and has been since 1995) the Executive Director of the New York/New Jersey HIDTA], [5] a federal grant program that invests in law enforcement partnerships to build safe and healthy communities.
Parker is a career public servant. He is a graduate of Rollins College and Duke University School of Law.[ citation needed ] After graduating from law school in 1986,he began his career in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office,where he served for five years under Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau.[ citation needed ] He next served for 10 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under United States Attorney Mary Jo White.[ citation needed ]
In 2002,New York Governor George E. Pataki appointed Parker as the Director of Criminal Justice and Commissioner of the Division of Criminal Justice,where for five years he oversaw all state criminal justice agencies.[ citation needed ] In 2010,Parker returned to the Manhattan DA's Office as an Executive Assistant District Attorney under Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. [ citation needed ] On December 9,2019,NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea appointed Parker to his current position as the Deputy Commissioner for Collaborative Policing. Parker is the recipient of the United States Department of Justice Award for Distinguished Service; [13] the J. Edward Lumbard Award from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York;and the Rx and Illicit Drug Summit's Congressman Hal Rogers Beacon of Hope Award. [14] Parker also serves on the Board of Directors [15] of the Joyful Heart Foundation,a nonprofit founded by actress and advocate Mariska Hargitay and dedicated to creating "a world free of sexual assault,domestic violence and child abuse."

Raymond Walter Kelly is an American police officer who was the longest-serving Commissioner in the history of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the first person to hold the post for two non-consecutive tenures. According to its website,Kelly,a lifelong New Yorker,had spent 45 years in the NYPD,serving in 25 different commands and as Police Commissioner from 1992 to 1994 and again from 2002 until 2013. Kelly was the first man to rise from Police Cadet to Police Commissioner,holding all of the department's ranks,except for Three-Star Bureau Chief,Chief of Department and Deputy Commissioner,having been promoted directly from Two-Star Chief to First Deputy Commissioner in 1990. After his handling of the World Trade Center bombing in 1993,he was mentioned for the first time as a possible candidate for FBI Director. After Kelly turned down the position,Louis Freeh was appointed.
Crime rates in New York City have been recorded since at least the 1800s. The highest crime totals were recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the crack epidemic surged,and then declined continuously from around 1990 throughout the 2000s. As of 2023,New York City has significantly lower rates of gun violence than many other large cities. Its 2022 homicide rate of 6.0 per 100,000 residents compares favorably to the rate in the United States as a whole and to rates in much more violent cities such as St. Louis and New Orleans.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) is structured into numerous bureaus and units. As a whole,the NYPD is headed by the Police Commissioner,a civilian administrator appointed by the Mayor,with the senior sworn uniformed officer of the service titled "Chief of Department". The Police Commissioner appoints the First Deputy Commissioner as the department's second-in-command and the Chief of Department as the department's highest ranking uniformed officer. The commissioner also appoints a number of deputy and assistant commissioners who do not have operational command and are solely for support and administrative function. Philip Banks III is the former Deputy Mayor of New York City for Public Safety and a retired law enforcement officer who served as NYPD chief of department in 2013 and 2014. As Chief of Department,Banks oversaw all patrol and specialty units. He resigned in the midst of the investigations into the Eric Adams administration.

Benjamin B. Tucker is an American police officer and administrator who was appointed First Deputy New York City Police Commissioner on Nov. 5,2014,in a ceremony at 1 Police Plaza in New York City. Commissioner Tucker is the NYPD's 43rd first deputy commissioner. "This is an amazing moment and time in my life," Tucker said. "I joined the NYPD family on November 21,1969,as an 18-year-old." He was sworn in as a police officer trainee at that time,and is now second in command of the nation's largest police force with a uniformed strength just shy of 35,000,plus several thousand in support staff. He later retired from the New York Police Department in December 2021.
Akai Gurley,a 28-year-old black man,was fatally shot on November 20,2014,in Brooklyn,New York City,United States,by a New York City Police Department officer. Two police officers,patrolling stairwells in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)'s Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York,Brooklyn,entered a pitch-dark,unlit stairwell. Officer Peter Liang,27,had his firearm drawn. Gurley and his girlfriend entered the seventh-floor stairwell,fourteen steps below them. Liang fired his weapon;the shot ricocheted off a wall and fatally struck Gurley in the chest. A jury convicted Liang of manslaughter,which a court later reduced to criminally negligent homicide.
A gang intelligence unit (GIU) is an American law enforcement unit tasked with investigating,suppressing,and combatting gangs within a geographical location. They exist to provide safety as well as information regarding gang activity in an area,and are also commonly found within correctional facilities. GIUs seek advanced awareness of gang activity as a method to suppress gang violence. Intelligence forms the foundation of GIUs' efforts to suppress gang violence and crime and maintain safety within the community.
The National Network for Safe Communities (NNSC) is a research center at City University of New York John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The NNSC works with communities to reduce violence,minimize arrest and incarceration,and increase trust between law enforcement and the public. Working in partnership with cities around the country the NNSC provides advising on implementing evidence-based violence reduction strategies.
