Melissa Aviles-Ramos is an American educator serving as the 32nd New York City Schools Chancellor. She previously served as Deputy Chancellor for family and community engagement and external affairs at the NYC DOE,and replaced David C. Banks following his resignation. [1]
Aviles-Ramos joined New York City Public Schools in 2007 as an English teacher at Truman High School. [2] [3] After teaching at Truman High School,Ramos was hired as the principal at Schuylerville Preparatory High School. At Schuylerville Prep,Aviles-Ramos increased the graduation rate from 23 percent to 68 percent in her first year,and from 68 percent to 83 percent in her second year. [3] Over her career in education,Aviles-Ramos has served in many roles including assistant principal,principal,deputy superintendent,acting superintendent,and education administrator. [2]
In September 2024,the NYC Mayor's office announced that Aviles-Ramos would replace David C. Banks as DOE Chancellor. [1] On October 2nd,the mayoral office announced that the date for Aviles-Ramos to replace Banks was moved up from January 1,2025 to October 16th,2024. [4] Explaining the move,mayoral spokesperson Amaris Cockfield wrote in a statement:"students are best served by having the same leadership through as much of the school year as possible,rather than changing chancellors halfway through.” [4]

Harry S. Truman High School is a public high school at 750 Baychester Avenue,in the Co-op City section of the Bronx,New York City,United States. The school is designated as an Empowerment School by the New York City Department of Education,which allows it more autonomy in choosing a curriculum. Truman shares a uniquely designed and interconnected campus with two middle schools,MS 180 and 181,and two elementary schools,PS 178 and 153. The campus was designed to be a one-stop and close-to-home solution for students and families in the Co-op City neighborhood,although many of the students commute to school from other parts of the city. The main Truman building is also home to the Bronx Health Sciences High School,which occupies a portion of the third floor,and PS 176X,a special education school for autistic students,which shares a small portion of the first and second floors.
The Washington Irving Campus is a public school building located at 40 Irving Place between East 16th and 17th Streets in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of Manhattan,New York City,near Union Square. Formerly the Washington Irving High School,it now houses six schools under the New York City Department of Education. The constituent schools include the Gramercy Arts High School,the High School for Language and Diplomacy,the International High School at Union Square,the Union Square Academy for Health Sciences,the Academy for Software Engineering,and the Success Academy Charter School.
