Gonzalo E. Casals (born November 21,1974) is an Argentine-American museum director and professor based in New York City. He is the former Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, [1] and previously held the executive director position at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in New York. [2] He was the Vice President of Programs and Community Engagement at Friends of the High Line,as well as the Deputy and Interim Director of El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem. [3] He is a resident of Jackson Heights,Queens.
Casals was raised in Buenos Aires,Argentina. Casals studied design and architecture at the Universidad de Belgrano. In 2002,he immigrated to New York City,where he received a Masters of Art History and Museum Studies from the City College of New York City and a Masters in Urban Affairs and Neighborhood and Community Development from Hunter College.
Casals has been part of the CreateNYC public engagement team and the New York City Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art,Monuments,and Markers. [4] While leading the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art,Casals transformed the museum,that often focussed on white cis gay men and their art,into a more diverse space for the LGBTQ+ community. Casals focused on the works of art by LGBTQ artists,people of color,women,trans people,and those with intersecting identities. [5] Casals has supported a number of major exhibitions:including the New York edition of the exhibition,"Art After Stonewall,1969–1989";a retrospective of the experimental filmmaker,Barbara Hammer;and a survey show on "queer abstraction." [5] As Director,Casals rebranded the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art,dropping the "gay and lesbian" titled that was part of the museum name prior. He broadened education programming and opened up the museum's archives and libraries to artists and researchers. [6] He has held teaching positions at the City University of New York,Yale University and New York University. [7]
The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (LLMA),formerly the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art,is a visual art museum in SoHo,Lower Manhattan,New York City. It mainly collects,preserves and exhibits visual arts created by LGBTQ artists or art about LGBTQ+ themes,issues,and people. The museum,operated by the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation,offers exhibitions year-round in numerous locations and owns more than 22,000 objects,including,paintings,drawings,photography,prints and sculpture. It has been recognized as one of the oldest arts groups engaged in the collection and preservation of gay art. The foundation was awarded Museum status by the New York State Board of Regents in 2011 and was formally accredited as a museum in 2016. The museum is a member of the American Alliance of Museums and operates pursuant to their guidelines. As of 2019,the LLMA was the only museum in the world dedicated to artwork documenting the LGBTQ experience.
Pedro Julio Serrano is an openly gay and HIV+ human rights activist and president of Puerto Rico Para Todes,a non-profit LGBTQ+ and social justice advocacy organization founded in 2003. He is a former advisor to former New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito and to former San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz. He also served,for more than three years,as executive director of Programa Vida and Clínica Transalud of the Municipality of San Juan. He now works as Director of Public Affairs at Waves Ahead.
The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) is the department of the government of New York City dedicated to supporting New York City's cultural life. George Stavrinos was a Greek American illustrator. Born in Somerville,Massachusetts,he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1969. After a year of study abroad he moved to Philadelphia and worked as a mural artist for local businesses. Laurie A. Cumbo is an American politician and Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. A Democrat,she served in the New York City Council for the 35th district from 2014 to 2021,which includes the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Fort Greene,Clinton Hill,and Prospect Heights,portions of Bedford-Stuyvesant,Crown Heights,Downtown Brooklyn,the Brooklyn Navy Yard,and Vinegar Hill. She is the founder and first executive director of the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts.

Stonewall 50 –WorldPride NYC 2019 was a series of LGBTQ events and celebrations in June 2019,marking the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots. It was also the first time WorldPride was held in the United States. Held primarily in the metropolitan New York City area,the theme for the celebrations and educational events was "Millions of moments of Pride." The celebration was the largest LGBTQ event in history,with an official estimate of five million attending Pride weekend in Manhattan alone,including an estimated four million in attendance at the parade. The twelve-hour parade included 150,000 pre-registered participants among 695 groups.
The National LGBTQ Wall of Honor is an American memorial wall in Greenwich Village,Lower Manhattan,New York City,dedicated to LGBTQ "pioneers,trailblazers,and heroes". The wall is located inside of the Stonewall Inn and is a part of the Stonewall National Monument,the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to LGBTQ rights and history. The first fifty nominees were announced in June 2019,and the wall was unveiled on June 27,2019,as a part of the Stonewall 50 –WorldPride NYC 2019 events. Each year five additional names will be added.
