The New York City Police Department (NYPD),officially the City of New York Police Department,is the primary law enforcement agency within New York City. Established on May 23,1845,the NYPD is the largest,and one of the oldest,municipal police departments in the United States.
The New York City Fire Department,officially the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the full-service fire department of New York City,serving all five boroughs. The FDNY is responsible for providing Fire Suppression Services,Specialized Hazardous Materials Response Services,Emergency Medical Response Services and Specialized Technical Rescue Services in the entire city.
Peter James Ganci Jr. was a career firefighter in the New York City Fire Department killed in the September 11 attacks. At the time of the attacks,he held the rank of Chief of Department,the highest ranking uniformed fire officer in the department.
William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American businessman and former law enforcement officer who served two non-consecutive tenures as the New York City Police Commissioner and currently one of only two NYPD commissioners to do so. He previously served as the Commissioner of the Boston Police Department (BPD) (1993–1994) and Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) (2002–2009). He is the only person to have led the police departments of the United States' two largest cities –New York and Los Angeles.
The New York City Fire Commissioner is the civilian administrator of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),and is appointed by the Mayor of the City of New York. Prior to 1865,the New York City Fire Department was staffed by volunteers. On March 30,1865 the New York State legislature passed a law organizing the Metropolitan Fire Department as a paid firefighting force that took control of all the powers and authority of the volunteer department,as well as all the assets such as the fire trucks,equipment,and buildings. The law also created a commission to oversee the department,and for its administration and functioning. After a lawsuit contesting the constitutionality of the law was dismissed by the New York Court of Appeals,it immediately started to operate.
Thomas Von Essen was appointed the 30th FDNY Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15,1996,and served in that position until the end of the Giuliani Administration on December 31,2001,nearly four months after the September 11,2001 attacks.
William Michael Feehan was a member of the Fire Department of New York who died during the collapse of the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks. He was the second-highest official in the department.
Robert Oliver Lowery was sworn in as the 21st New York City Fire Commissioner by Mayor John V. Lindsay on January 1,1966,and held that position until his resignation on September 29,1973.
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is the department of the government of New York City responsible for garbage collection,recycling collection,street cleaning,and snow removal. The DSNY is the primary operator of the New York City waste management system.
Stephen Cassidy was the longest serving President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York (UFA) in its 100-year history. He was first elected to the position in August 2002 and is the only UFA President in the union's history to be elected directly out of a firehouse. In 2016,Cassidy resigned his position as UFA President to serve as the executive director of the New York City Fire Pension Fund. In 2018,following his arrest for driving while intoxicated,New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro removed Cassidy from his position as executive director of the New York City Fire Pension Fund.
Salvatore Joseph "Sal" Cassano served as the 32nd New York City Fire Commissioner from 2010 to 2014.

Spadafora was an American firefighter and the Assistant fire chief in of fire prevention for the FDNY,notable for his service supervising the entire safety operation during the rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero following the September 11 attacks and for his writing on firefighting,fire safety,and firefighting gear.
Dermot Francis Shea is a retired American police officer who was the 44th New York City Police Commissioner. He assumed the position on December 1,2019,and was sworn in by Mayor Bill de Blasio in a public ceremony on December 2.
John Sudnik is a firefighter with the FDNY,who was promoted to acting Chief of Department,the most senior uniformed member of the Department,on December 10,2018. Prior to replacing his predecessor,James E. Leonard,Sudnik had been Chief of Operations. Sudnik's acting appointment was made permanent on February 27,2019.
Laura R. Kavanagh is an American government official who served as the 34th commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). She was first woman to hold the position. Appointed by Mayor Eric Adams on October 27,2022,Kavanagh oversaw the diversification of the FDNY applicant pool,including graduating the largest group of women in nearly three decades.
Joseph W. Pfeifer is a retired American firefighter who served with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Pfeifer served as First Deputy Commissioner of the FDNY from February 2023 until September 2024,and as Acting Fire Commissioner of the FDNY in August 2024. Prior to his civilian work in the FDNY,Pfeifer was an Assistant Chief. He retired in 2018.
Jessica Sarah Tisch is an American public administrator serving as the 48th New York City Police Commissioner since November 2024. Previously,she served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation from 2022 to 2024,as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications from 2019 to 2022,and as Deputy Commissioner for Information Technology at the New York City Police Department from 2014 to 2019.
