Daniel A. Nigro (born October 11,1948) is the former New York City Fire Commissioner of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). He served this position from 2014 until his retirement in 2022. [2] Nigro's appointment was announced on May 9,2014,and he was sworn in on June 9. [3]
Nigro was the 33rd Fire Commissioner in the 150-year history of the New York City Fire Department. The Commissioner is the most senior member of the fire department,and it is a civilian,non-uniformed office. [4]
Nigro grew up in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens,New York. He later attended Baruch College. Nigro's father was a Captain in the FDNY. [5]
In 1969,Nigro joined the FDNY. [6] He became a Deputy Chief in 1993,and in 1996,he oversaw the merging of the city's ambulance squads with the fire department. [3] [6]
Nigro was appointed Chief of the Department —the highest-ranking uniformed position—following the death of Chief Peter J. Ganci Jr.,in the 9/11 attacks. [6] Nigro was regarded for his leadership following the deaths of 343 firefighters in the attacks. [3]
Nigro retired as Chief in 2002. [7] That same year,in retirement,Nigro was a member of an FDNY anti-terrorism task force. [5]
Regarding Nigro's appointment as Commissioner,New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said:"Our administration is committed to building on this department’s impressive record,increasing diversity in the ranks,and improving response time and I know Daniel has what it takes to lead the FDNY forward". [3]
In 2022,Nigro retired as Commissioner of the FDNY,effective February 16,2022. [8]
Nigro received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Manhattan College in May of 2023,and delivered the Commencement address at the College's Graduate Commencement Ceremony. [9]

William Joseph Bratton CBE is an American businessman and former law enforcement officer who served two non-consecutive tenures as the New York City Police Commissioner and currently one of only two NYPD commissioners to do so. The New York City Fire Commissioner is the civilian administrator of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),and is appointed by the Mayor of the City of New York. Prior to 1865,the New York City Fire Department was staffed by volunteers. On March 30,1865 the New York State legislature passed a law organizing the Metropolitan Fire Department as a paid firefighting force that took control of all the powers and authority of the volunteer department,as well as all the assets such as the fire trucks,equipment,and buildings. The law also created a commission to oversee the department,and for its administration and functioning. Thomas Von Essen was appointed the 30th FDNY Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani on April 15,1996,and served in that position until the end of the Giuliani Administration on December 31,2001,nearly four months after the September 11,2001 attacks.

John Sudnik is a firefighter with the FDNY,who was promoted to acting Chief of Department,the most senior uniformed member of the Department,on December 10,2018. Prior to replacing his predecessor,James E. Leonard,Sudnik had been Chief of Operations. Sudnik's acting appointment was made permanent on February 27,2019.

Appointed by Mayor Eric Adams on October 27,2022,Kavanagh oversaw the diversification of the FDNY applicant pool,including graduating the largest group of women in nearly three decades.
Joseph W. Pfeifer is a retired American firefighter who served with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Pfeifer served as First Deputy Commissioner of the FDNY from February 2023 until September 2024,and as Acting Fire Commissioner of the FDNY in August 2024. Prior to his civilian work in the FDNY,Pfeifer was an Assistant Chief. He retired in 2018.
