Jollas is a southeastern neighborhood of about 3000 people in Helsinki, Finland located in the eastern part of the Laajasalo island. [1] [2]

Jollas was for a long time a loose single-family area with old wooden houses, but since the 1980s the area has been more densely built up. [3]

The history of Jollas begins with the Jollas Manor in 1798. The present main building of the manor dates back to 1919 and was designed by Robert Tikkanen. [4]

Nature

The nature of Jollas represents the inland Archipelago zone of southern Finland with its rocky and sandy terrain, dry cliffs and lush marshes. There are traces of the Ice Age in Tonttuvuori with a double -giant's kettle. [5] There is also a small four-hectare nature reserve called Jollaksen räme near Furuvik beach. [6] [7]

Transport and services

You can get to Jollas from Herttoniemi metro station with buses 85 and 85K. At night, bus 85N runs from Helsinki Railway Square. The main stop for Jollas is at the eastern end of Puuskaniementie. The bus has morning and night departures on weekends. In addition, the Jollas commuter bus 802 runs from Monday to Friday from 7.45 to 16.30 and has eight daily services in each direction.

Jollaksentie 89 is home to a hotel called Jollas89, which opened in 2018. It is located in the former premises of the S Group Training Centre Jollas Institute. The Jollas Institute moved to Vallila in 2016. [8]

Jollas is home to Poikkilaakso Primary School [9] and Snellman College. [10]

Itäkeskus is a quarter in the neighbourhood of Vartiokylä in Helsinki, Finland. The district's main attraction is the largest covered-in shopping mall in the Nordic countries, Itis, which make Itäkeskus as the most significant commercial center of East Helsinki. The district has a station on the Helsinki Metro, whose eastern entrance at the Tallinnanaukio square leads to the shopping centre. Itäkeskus has the eastern terminus of bus lines 500 and 550; the western terminus of line 500 is Munkkivuori and line 550 is Espoo's Westend bus station. Construction of the Jokeri light rail, which replaces bus line 550, began in 2019 and service began in 2023. The most important road connection to the Helsinki central from Itäkeskus runs along Itäväylä.

Malmi is a regional center and a major district on the north-eastern part of Helsinki, Finland. It has a population of 24,312 (2008). The Malmi District is divided into six subareas, two of which are the center forming Ylä-Malmi and Ala-Malmi, and the rest are Tattariharju, Malminkenttä. Malmin peruspiiri is a related but distinct subdivision of Helsinki which does not include Pihlajamäki and Pihlajisto, but instead includes Tapanila and Tapaninvainio. Rastila is an eastern suburb in the Vuosaari district of Helsinki, Finland. Rastila lies to the north of the arterial road Vuotie ; to the south lies Meri-Rastila, which is often understood as part of Rastila. Rastila metro station opened in 1998. Rastila is mostly populated by families in detached houses, but around the station there are new blocks of flats for 2000 inhabitants.

Finland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2000 with the song "A Little Bit" written by Luca Genta and Gerrit aan't Goor. The song was performed by Nina Åström. The Finnish broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle) returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their relegation from 1999 as one of the six countries with the least average points over the preceding five contests. Yle organised the national final Euroviisut 2000 in order to select the Finnish entry for the 2000 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. 12 entries were selected to compete in the national final, which consisted of a semi-final and a final, taking place in January and February 2000. The top six from the semi-final, as selected solely by a public vote, advanced to the final. Six entries competed in the final on 12 January where the 50/50 combination of votes from a ten-member expert jury and votes from the public selected "A Little Bit" performed by Nina Åström as the winner.
