Joseph Glover is an American mathematician who served as the Provost for the University of Florida from 2008 to 2023,where he is currently a professor of mathematics. [1]
Glover attended Cornell University for his bachelor's degree, where classes taught by Leonard Gross,Kiyosi Itô,and Frank Spitzer sparked his interest in probability theory. [2] In 1977,he obtained a master's degree in mathematics from the University of California,San Diego, [3] where he also completed his Ph.D. in 1978 under the supervision of Michael Sharpe. [4]
Glover began his academic career at University of California,Berkeley, and went on to serve as an assistant professor at the University of Rochester from 1979-1982. [3]
In 1982,Glover joined the faculty at the University of Florida as an assistant professor of mathematics. In 1987 he was promoted to full professor, and served as department chair from 1993 to 1998. Glover then served as the associate dean for faculty affairs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. [5] In 2001 he was named Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, and then was promoted to interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Science in 2006,and he served in this capacity for the 2007-08 academic year. [6] In July 2008 Glover was appointed Provost of the University of Florida. [7] He served as provost until July 2023,when he stepped down from the position to become senior advisor to the University of Florida's incoming president,Ben Sasse. [8]
In April 2024 it was announced that Glover would be the next provost of the University of Arizona, beginning 1 July 2024. [9] On the day of the announcement, the Tucson Sentinel reported that over 100 University of Arizona faculty had signed a letter opposing Glover's appointment, and supporting instead the appointment of Marie Hardin,a professor at Penn State. [10]
Glover's main research areas are Markov processes (in the sense of right,Hunt, and Lévy processes),probabilistic potential theory, and harmonic analysis. [11] He has co-authored papers with Ronald Getoor and Kai Lai Chung, among others. [12]
Eugene Borisovich Dynkin was a Soviet and American mathematician. He made contributions to the fields of probability and algebra, especially semisimple Lie groups, Lie algebras, and Markov processes. The Dynkin diagram, the Dynkin system, and Dynkin's lemma are named after him.
The University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences is the largest of the University of Virginia's ten schools. Consisting of both a graduate and an undergraduate program, the College comprises the liberal arts and humanities section of the University.
In probability theory, a Hunt process is a type of Markov process, named for mathematician Gilbert A. Hunt who first defined them in 1957. Hunt processes were important in the study of probabilistic potential theory until they were superseded by right processes in the 1970s.
Wesley Kent Fuchs is an American university professor and academic administrator. He was the 12th president of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, serving from 2015 to 2023. He previously served as the provost of Cornell University from 2009 through 2014.
Anderson Hall is a historic building located in the northeastern section of the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. The building houses the university's political science and religion departments, both a part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Anderson Hall was designed by William Augustus Edwards, responsible for planning nearly all of the campus' early buildings, in Collegiate Gothic style. Construction began in 1912, and the building opened in October 1913 as Language Hall.
Kathryn Chicone Ustler Hall is a historic building on the campus of the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville, Florida. It was designed by William Augustus Edwards in the Collegiate Gothic style and opened in 1919 as the University Gymnasium. In that capacity, the building was the first home of the Florida Gators men's basketball team, and it continued to serve as the home court for most of the university's indoor sports programs until the Florida Gymnasium opened in the late 1940s. The university became co-educational at about the same time, and the building was rechristened the Women's Gymnasium and was repurposed as a recreation center for the school's many new female students. On June 27, 1979, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
