Kaiyuan (simplified Chinese :开远; traditional Chinese :開遠; pinyin :Kāiyuǎn) is a county-level city within the jurisdiction of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture in the southeast of Yunnan province, China.

The maximum sea level of Kaiyuan is 2,775.6 meters and the minimum is 950 meters.

Demography

It has a population of 299,000, of whom 156,000 belong to ethnic minorities, including Yi, Zhuang, Miao, and Hui.

Ethnic groups

The Kaiyuan City Almanac (1996:618) lists the following ethnic Yi subgroups.

Daizhanpo 呆占泼 and Digaopo 底高泼 are identified by Pelkey (2011) [9] as Hlepho Phowa speakers. Labopho means ‘Highland Pho’, and Digaopho means ‘Lowland Pho’. [9] Pelkey (2011:110) identifies Phowa subgroups as Hlepho (ɬɛ˧pʰo˨˩), Anipho (a˧nɨ˥pʰo˨˩), Digaopho (ti˨˩kaʌ˥pʰo˨˩), Labopho (lɑ˨˩bo˨˩pʰo˨˩), and Asaheipho (a˧sa˧χɨ˥pʰo˨˩).

Culture

Kaiyuan is thought highly of in the field of traditional martial arts, and held the first Chinese Traditional Martial Arts Festival in 2006.

Economy

Kaiyuan is a long-established industrial city, which has been paying much attention to its environment problems. Its aim is "to construct an affluent city with an ecological industrial base". Kaiyuan is also home to the Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

With the approval of the central government, Yunnan has established an experimental zone for private small businesses at Kaiyuan.

The Nisoish or Yi languages, which contains both the Northern Loloish and Southeastern Loloish branches, are a branch of the Loloish languages proposed by Lama (2012). Northern Loloish and Southeastern Loloish were established by Bradley (1997), while the Nisoish group combining Bradley's two branches was proposed by Ziwo Lama (2012). Lama (2012) refers to Northern Loloish as Nisoid or Nisu–Lope, and Southeastern Loloish as Axi–Puoid.

Kucong, or Lahlu, is a Loloish language of Yunnan, China and Vietnam, primarily spoken by the Kucong people. In Vietnam, the speakers' autonym is, and are also known as the La Hủ Na 'Black Lahu'. The language is very closely related to Lahu.

The Southeastern Loloish languages, also known as Southeastern Ngwi, are a branch of the Loloish languages. In Lama's (2012) classification, it is called Axi-Puoid, which forms the Nisoish branch together with the Nisoid (Nisu–Lope) languages.

The Hani languages are a group of closely related but distinct languages of the Loloish (Yi) branch of the Tibeto-Burman linguistic group. They are also referred to as the Hanoid languages by Lama (2012) and as the Akoid languages by Bradley (2007).

Alu is an unclassified Loloish language of Yunnan, China. It is spoken in Jinping Miao, Yao, and Dai Autonomous County, Lüchun County, Jiangcheng Hani and Yi Autonomous County, and Yuanyang County, Yunnan. The Alu are also referred to by other ethnic groups as Luwu 鲁乌 or Luowu 倮乌. There are also 500 to 600 Alu people in two villages of Ou Tay District, Phongsali Province, Laos.
