Kuttysuchus is an extinct group of typothoracine aetosaur from the Late Triassic Dharmaram Formation of India. It was described in 2025 on the basis of multiple isolated osteoderms that were nonetheless distinct in their appearance from not only the contemporary Venkatasuchus but also from other aetosaur taxa. The specific combination of characters suggests that Kuttysuchus was a member of the clade Paratypothoracini, with phylogenetic analysis indicating it to have been a basal member of the group. The genus is monotypic, only containing a single species. Kuttysuchus minori.

History and naming

Kuttysuchus was described in early 2025 on the basis of a series of isolated paramedian osteoderms, with one almost complete bone serving as the holotype. All fossils stem from the sandstone-dominated lower unit of the Dharmaram Formation, located in the Pranhita–Godavari Basin of eastern India and thought to date from the mid or late Norian to the Rhaetian stages of the Triassic. Kuttysuchus was named after T.S. Kutty, who recovered the fossil material. The second part of the name derives from the Greek "suchus", which translates to "crocodile". The species name "minori" meanwhile references the small size of the osteoderms. [1]

Description

The only fossils found of Kuttysuchus are paramedian osteoderms, which form the much wider central two rows of armor that would have stretched across the animal’s back in life. The smaller, triangular lateral osteoderms that would have attached to the side of the paramedian osteoderms have not been found. As with other aetosaurs, the paramedian osteoderms are wider than they are long, however, in this particular case the width:length radio is relatively low, with the width being less than twice the length. This, coupled with the strong transverse flexure of the osteoderms and some other features suggest that they formed the anterior or middle tail armor. Overall the osteoderms are rather thin, unlike those of desmatosuchins. [1]

The front of each osteoderm forms the unornamented (smooth) anterior bar, which in articulation would slide beneath the previous osteoderm. In Kuttysuchus, the anterior bar is weakly raised. The medial edge of the anterior bar, meaning the one directed towards the midline of the animal, bears a short and pointed spur that is not as well developed as in some other taxa like Stagonolepis . Just before this projection the anterior bar thins slightly, which is known as scalloping. The inner (medial) edge of the osteoderms is straight and thin, the ancestral condition among aetosaurs, lacking the thickened articular surface that is characteristic of desmatosuchins. [1]

The osteoderms bear a prominent dorsal eminence, a pyramid-shaped raised region that in Kuttysuchus is located much closer to the back edge of the osteoderm yet not touching the actual posterior margin, something that is a shared trait among paratypothoracins. Additionally, the dorsal eminence is described as mediolaterally elongated, meaning it is stretched in width. The shape of the eminence does help differentiate Kuttysuchus from other species, which may variable exhibit spike-like, bulbous knob-like, mound-like or even keel-like dorsal eminences, but is close in shape to that of Typothorax and Paratypothorax . However it is noted that the shape of the dorsal eminence varies based on the position of the osteoderm, with those closer to the tail being often more strongly developed before reducing in size again around the mid-caudal region. Unlike in the contemporary Venkatasuchus, the eminence in Kuttysuchus did not connect to a ridge, nor was the back edge of the osteoderm bevelled as in the former. The dorsal eminence forms somewhat of a center for the ornamentation of the osteoderm and various sharp, straight ridges as well as deep narrow grooves radiate outwards from the element, with small pits filling the spaces between them. Notably, the grooves do not contain any pits themselves, which sets them apart from those of Venkatasuchus , the other Dharmaram aetosaur. The ornamentation coupled with the shape of the dorsal eminence distinguish Kuttysuchus from members of Desmatosuchini, though they do bear some resemblance to non-desmatosuchin stagonolepoid aetosaurs. The lower (ventral) surface of the osteoderms is smooth, lacing the pits and ridges that ornament the dorsal surface. Each osteoderm bears a prominent convex region that bears a weakly developed thickening, the so-called ventral strut. At the position of the dorsal eminence, the osteoderms arch or flex. [1]

Phylogeny

Though the lack of complete paramedian and lateral osteoderms can cause issues in phylogenetic analysis, Haldar, Ray and Bandyopadhyay have argued that the osteoderm armor of Kuttysuchus is complete and distinct enough to be used in order to determine the animals relationships within Aetosauria. Two analysis were run by the team, one based on the work of Haldar et al. (2023) and another based on Reyes et al. (2024), with the latter including the wildcard taxon Garzapelta , noted by Haldar and colleagues to be an example of an aetosaur who's incomplete nature causes conflicting phylogenetic positions. [1]

Following resampling, the first analysis recovers Kuttysuchus as the earliest branching member of the Paratypothoracini, with the contemporary Venkatasuchus in a much more derived position within the group. Nevertheless, this topology is well supported by the study, meaning that it is likely that Kuttysuchus was a paratypothoracin. Though not as well resolved as the first analysis, the second phylogenetic analysis, which included Garzapelta, recovered similar results. It too placed Kuttysuchus at the base of Paratypothoracini, in this scenario in a polytomy with Kocurypelta . Here too the contemporary Venkatasuchus was found to be nested much deeper in the clade. Cladograms based on both analysis are shown below, the left following iteration 1 based on the dataset of Haldar et al. (2023) and the right followint iteration 2 based on the dataset of Reyes et al. Paleobiology

The fauna of the lower Dharmaram Formation is dominated by archosaurs, which in addition to Kuttysuchus included a phytosaur of the clade Mystriosuchinae, several sauropodomorphs including Jaklapallisaurus and even a neotheropod. At least two other aetosaurs are known from these sediments, one undescribed taxon similar to Desmatosuchus as well as the paratypothoracin Venkatasuchus . The presence of paratypothoracins has been used in previous studies to suggest that the lower Dharmaram Formation could be as old as the middle Norian. [1]

Acaenasuchus is an extinct genus of pseudosuchian, endemic to what would be presently be known as Arizona during the Late Triassic, specifically during the Carnian and Norian stages of the Triassic. Acaenasuchus had a stratigraphic range of approximately 11.5 million years. Acaenasuchus is further categorized as one of the type fauna that belong to the Adamanian LVF, based on the fauna of the Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Petrified Forest Formation of Arizona, where Acaenasuchus was initially discovered.

Typothoracinae is a clade of aetosaurs within the subfamily Aetosaurinae. It was originally defined as a stem-based taxon including all aetosaurs closer to Typothorax than to Stagonolepis or Desmatosuchus. The clade was first named in 2007 under the spelling Paraypothoracisini, after its namesake Paratypothorax. However, this spelling was based on incorrect taxonomic nomenclature, and the clade's name was corrected to Paratypothoracinae in 2016.

Redondasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur. It may be a junior synonym of Typothorax coccinarum, another aetosaur. Redondasuchus is a member of the clade Typothoracisinae within the subfamily Aetosaurinae, and lived during the middle Norian stage of the Late Triassic. Material belonging to the genus has been found from the Redonda Formation in east-central New Mexico. The type species, R. reseri, was named in 1991 after having been referred to as a species of Typothorax since 1985. A second species, R. rineharti, was described in 2006.

Sierritasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur in the subfamily Desmatosuchinae. It is known from a small holotype skeleton from the Late Triassic Tecovas Formation of Texas. This skeleton was discovered in 1939 and was originally assigned to the genus Desmatosuchus. It was placed in its own genus in 2008 after having been in the collections of the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology, with the type species being S. macalpini. The generic name refers to Sierrita de la Cruz Creek where the holotype was found, and the specific name refers to Archie MacAlpin, who discovered the skeleton. Based on the histology of the scutes of the holotype, the individual was a subadult that was not fully grown.

<i>Tarjadia</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Tarjadia is an extinct genus of erpetosuchid pseudosuchian, distantly related to modern crocodilians. It is known from a single species, T. ruthae, first described in 1998 from the Middle Triassic Chañares Formation in Argentina. Partial remains have been found from deposits that are Anisian-Ladinian in age. Long known mostly from osteoderms, vertebrae, and fragments of the skull, specimens described in 2017 provided much more anatomical details and showed that it was a fairly large predator. Tarjadia predates known species of aetosaurs and phytosaurs, two Late Triassic groups of crurotarsans with heavy plating, making it one of the first heavily armored archosaurs. Prior to 2017, most studies placed it outside Archosauria as a member of Doswelliidae, a family of heavily armored and crocodile-like archosauriforms. The 2017 specimens instead show that it belonged to the Erpetosuchidae.

The Lower Dharmaram Formation is a sedimentary rock formation found in Telangana, India. It is one of the formations of the Pranhita–Godavari Basin. It is of latest Norian and Rhaetian ages, and is notable for its fossils of early dinosaurs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Erpetosuchidae</span> Extinct family of reptiles

Erpetosuchidae is an extinct family of pseudosuchian archosaurs. Erpetosuchidae was named by D. M. S. Watson in 1917 to include Erpetosuchus. It includes the type species Erpetosuchus granti from the Late Triassic of Scotland, Erpetosuchus sp. from the Late Triassic of eastern United States and Parringtonia gracilis from the middle Middle Triassic of Tanzania; the group might also include Dyoplax arenaceus from the Late Triassic of Germany, Archeopelta arborensis and Pagosvenator candelariensis from Brazil and Tarjadia ruthae from Argentina.

Jaxtasuchus is an extinct genus of armored doswelliid archosauriform reptile known from the Middle Triassic of the Erfurt Formation in Germany. The type species, Jaxtasuchus salomoni, was named in 2013 on the basis of several incomplete skeletons and other isolated remains. Like other doswelliids, members of the genus were heavily armored, with four longitudinal rows of bony plates called osteoderms covering the body. Jaxtasuchus is the first doswelliid known from Europe and is most closely related to Doswellia from the Late Triassic of the eastern United States. However, it was not as specialized as Doswellia, retaining several generalized archosauriform characteristics and having less armor. Jaxtasuchus fossils have been found in aquatic mudstones alongside fossils of temnospondyl amphibians, crustaceans, and mollusks, suggesting that Jaxtasuchus was semiaquatic like modern crocodilians.

Polesinesuchus is an extinct genus of stagonolepidid aetosaur known from the Late Triassic of southern Brazil. Fossils have been found from the Santa Maria Supersequence of the late Carnian and early Norian stages, making Polesinesuchus one of the oldest aetosaurs. It contains a single species, Polesinesuchus aurelioi, the fifth aetosaur species known from South America to date. Anatomical evidence suggests that Polesinesuchus likely represents a juvenile individual of the contemporary Aetosauroides.

Gorgetosuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic of the North Carolina, represented by the type species Gorgetosuchus pekinensis. It is mainly known from osteoderms, including the front half of an articulated carapace. Gorgotesuchus is typically considered a basal desmatosuchin, though alternative interpretations exist.

<i>Scutarx</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Scutarx is an extinct genus of Aetosauriformes, most commonly regarded by its species name Scutarx deltatylus. Scutarx lived around 230 million years ago during the Carnian and Norian stage of the Late Triassic. Scutarx are “medium sized” paramedian osteoderms belonging to the clade Aetosauria, a heavily armored and more herbivorous cousin of crocodiles.

Apachesuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic of New Mexico. It is only known from several paramedian osteoderms discovered in Quay County in eastern New Mexico. This area belongs to the late Norian-age Quay Member of the Redonda Formation. Unique among aetosaurs, its osteoderms are nearly completely smooth, without strong pits or grooves. The left dorsal paramedian has a relatively high width-to-length ration, suggesting that Apachesuchus is a wide-bodied aetosaur within the clade Typothoracinae.

Kryphioparma is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation, Arizona. It is the oldest known member of the subfamily Typothoracinae, and is currently only known from five isolated and incomplete dorsal osteoderms. Regardless, said osteoderms show a clear mix of features that do not match any other known aetosaur and were thus used as the basis for a new genus and species in 2023. The genus is monotypic, only including a single species, Kryphioparma caerula.

<i>Venkatasuchus</i> Genus of reptile

Venkatasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic Dharmaram Formation of India. It was described in 2023 on the basis of a series of associated osteoderms that formed the paramedian and lateral armour. Based on the osteoderms the carapace of Venkatasuchus was disc-shaped and very wide, with curved, horn-like elements along its sides. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Venkatasuchus belonged to the subfamily Typothoracinae and more specifically the clade Paratypothoracini. Venkatasuchus is among the few aetosaurs recovered from the region that would later become Gondwana and lends credence to the idea that late Triassic India represented a connective hub between Laurasian and Gondwanan fauna. The genus is monotypic, meaning it only includes a single species, Venkatasuchus armatum.

Garzapelta is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic Cooper Canyon Formation containing a single species, G. muelleri. Garzapelta is known primarily from an associated collection of osteoderms, although some other bones such as ribs are also known. The anatomy of Garzapelta's armour displays a mix of features otherwise seen in Rioarribasuchus chamaensis, a member of the Paratypothoracini, and taxa of the subfamily Desmatosuchinae. This mix of characters is so distinct that phylogenetic analysis yielded different results based on what parts of the osteoderms were used, suggesting that the current dataset does not account for convergent evolution in osteoderm anatomy. Reyes, Martz and Small suggest that Garzapelta was likely a paratypothoracin that simply evolved lateral osteoderms similar to those of desmatosuchins, reasoning that its armour does not articulate in the way seen in members of the latter group.
