Redondasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur. It may be a junior synonym of Typothorax coccinarum , another aetosaur. Redondasuchus is a member of the clade Typothoracisinae within the subfamily Aetosaurinae, and lived during the middle Norian stage of the Late Triassic. Material belonging to the genus has been found from the Redonda Formation in east-central New Mexico. The type species, R. reseri, was named in 1991 after having been referred to as a species of Typothorax since 1985. A second species, R. rineharti, was described in 2006.

Description and species

Redondasuchus was first named with the description of the type species, R. reseri, in 1991. [1] R. reseri was named on the basis of isolated scutes found at Apache Canyon and Shark Tooth Hill in Quay County, New Mexico. R. rineharti was described in 2006 from several scutes and part of a right femur found from Apache Canyon. [2]

While other aetosaurs have scutes covered in pits and grooves that often form radial patterns, the scutes of Redondasuchus are densely covered in pits and lack any patterning. The dorsal paramedian scutes (those that line the back) are unique in that they are angled approximately 45°. In other aetosaurs, the scutes arc smoothly around the back from the midline to the lateral scutes that lie below them and run along the side of the animal. [2]

The dorsal paramedians of R. reseri are smaller than those of R. rineharti. In both species, each paramedian possesses a keel on the underside that extends from the medial edge (the edge near the vertebrae) to the flexed area of the scute. [2]

Plagiarism allegations

Background

The orientation of the dorsal paramedian osteoderms of Redondasuchus has been disputed. Originally, Hunt & Lucas (1991) argued that the angled part of the osteoderm was two thirds the way down from the medial edge. The holotype osteoderm of R. reseri was identified as a left paramedian based on the position of the anterior bar, an unornamented strip of bone that is known to lie on the front edge of the osteoderm in other aetosaurs. [1] This interpretation was repeated in subsequent papers by Heckert et al. (1996) [3] and Heckert & Lucas (2000).

In 2002, an unpublished Texas Tech University thesis by Jeffrey Martz claimed that the holotype of R. reseri was actually a right paramedian. This was justified by comparison to the structure and ossification pattern of Typothorax coccinarum, a closely related species of aetosaur. Martz also suggested that R. reseri was synonymous with Typothorax coccinarum. [4]

This thesis, though widely disseminated among aetosaur workers, was not published in a peer-reviewed journal. An equivalent reinterpretation of Redondasuchus' osteoderm was first described in a peer-reviewed journal by Spielmann et al. (2006), a review of the taxon published in the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science Bulletin. Spielmann, Hunt, and Lucas, who all contributed to the article, were also members of the editorial board for the Bulletin, while Hunt was additionally the museum director at the time. They claimed to provide a novel interpretation of the holotype osteoderm as a right paramedian, noting that the orientation of the osteoderm in the diagrams of previous published papers may have introduced confusion. One diagram, from Heckert et al. (1996), depicted the anterior margin as placed near the bottom of the page with the posterior margin near the top, which may have contributed to its misidentification. [2] Martz's 2002 thesis was widely cited, but only in criticism of his argument that Redondasuchus and Typothorax were synonymous. His arguments on osteoderm orientation were not mentioned. [5]

Allegations

In 2007, Martz, along with fellow paleontologists Darren Naish, Mike Taylor, and Matt Wedel, publicly accused Spielmann et al. of committing plagiarism. [6] They asserted that the authors of Spielmann et al. (2006) could not have come up with the same interpretation as Martz independently. They pointed to how the authors were in possession of the 2002 thesis for three years, their extensive citation of the thesis, and similarities between certain figures in Spielmann et al. (2006) and the thesis. [5] This controversy was connected to a similar allegation of ethical misconduct and editorial mismanagement related to an aetosaur paper published by NMMNH staff in December 2006. The paper in question provided the genus name Rioarribasuchus for a species of aetosaur which Bill Parker was in the process of publishing under the name Heliocanthus, although Parker's paper was not fully published until January 2007. These coinciding controversies, termed "Aetogate", were publicized both in the scientific community [7] and in local Albuquerque news. [8]

After requests for a New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs inquiry, Martz et al.'s allegations, as well as those of Parker, were reviewed and rejected in a 2008 NMMNH meeting which was subsequently reported by Lucas. Lucas's report phrased the omittance of Martz's identification as an "oversight" by Spielmann et al. (2006), and also argued that pre-2002 papers on the topic presented "inconsistencies" rather than a specific argument on orientation. [9] The report's arguments and conclusions were heavily criticized by the accusing parties. [5] [8] A separate independent investigation by the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology did not find evidence for explicit, intentional plagiarism in Spielmann et al. (2006). The SVP report did not "absolve either party from responsibility", and also criticize the editorial and regulatory practices of the NMMNH and its staff, the lack of communication or collaboration experienced during the situation, and the difficulty in proving plagiarism or conflicts of interest in paleontological work. [10] A revised code of ethics was published by the SVP alongside the results of their investigation. [11]

Phylogeny

Heckert et al. (1996) considered Redondasuchus to be part of an advanced grade of aetosaurs that also included Neoaetosauroides , Longosuchus , Desmatosuchus , Paratypothorax , and Typothorax . [3]

Aetosaurs are heavily armored reptiles belonging to the extinct order Aetosauria. They were medium- to large-sized omnivorous or herbivorous pseudosuchians, part of the branch of archosaurs more closely related to crocodilians than to birds and other dinosaurs. All known aetosaurs are restricted to the Late Triassic, and in some strata from this time they are among the most abundant fossil vertebrates. They have small heads, upturned snouts, erect limbs, and a body ornamented with four rows of plate-like osteoderms. <i>Revueltosaurus</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Revueltosaurus is an extinct genus of suchian pseudosuchian from Late Triassic deposits of New Mexico, Arizona and North Carolina, United States. Many specimens, mostly teeth, have been assigned to Revueltosaurus over the years. Currently, three species are included in this genus, all of which were originally thought to represent monospecific genera of basal ornithischian dinosaurs. It was 1 meter long.

Spinosuchus is an extinct genus of trilophosaurid allokotosaur from the Late Triassic of Texas, southern United States. It has been assigned to a variety of groups over its history, from coelophysid dinosaur to pseudosuchian to uncertain theropod dinosaur and to Proterosuchidae. This uncertainty is not unusual, given that it was only known from a poorly preserved, wall-mounted, partial vertebral column of an animal that lived in a time of diverse, poorly known reptile groups. However, newly collected material and recent phylogenetic studies of early archosauromorphs suggest that it represents an advanced trilophosaurid very closely related to Trilophosaurus.

Calyptosuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic of North America. Like other aetosaurs, it was heavily armored and had a pig-like snout used to uproot plants.

<i>Acaenasuchus</i> Genus of reptiles

Acaenasuchus is an extinct genus of pseudosuchian, endemic to what would be presently be known as Arizona during the Late Triassic, specifically during the Carnian and Norian stages of the Triassic. Acaenasuchus had a stratigraphic range of approximately 11.5 million years. Acaenasuchus is further categorized as one of the type fauna that belong to the Adamanian LVF, based on the fauna of the Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Petrified Forest Formation of Arizona, where Acaenasuchus was initially discovered.

Redondasaurus is an extinct genus or subgenus of phytosaur from the Late Triassic of the southwestern United States. It was named by Hunt & Lucas in 1993, and contains two species, R. gregorii and R. bermani. It is the youngest and most evolutionarily-advanced of the phytosaurs.

Typothorax is an extinct genus of typothoracine aetosaur that lived in the Late Triassic. Its remains have been found in North America. Two species are known: T. coccinarum, the type species, and T. antiquum.

The Cooper Canyon Formation is a geological formation of Norian age in Texas and New Mexico. It is one of several formations encompassed by the Dockum Group.

Coahomasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaurine aetosaur. Remains of the genus have been found from deposits in Texas and North Carolina that date to the Otischalkian faunachron of the Late Triassic. It was small for an aetosaur, being less than 1.5 metres long. The dorsal plates are distinctively flat and unflexed, and have a faint sub-parallel to radial ornamentation. The genus lacked spines or keels on these plates, features seen in many other aetosaurs. Coahomasuchus was very similar in appearance to the closely related Aetosaurus.

Rioarribasuchus is a genus of aetosaur. Fossils have been found from the Chinle Formation in Arizona and New Mexico that date back to the upper Late Carnian stage of the Late Triassic.

Lucasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur. Fossils have been found from the Bull Canyon Formation of the Dockum Group outcropping in the Revuelto Creek locality in Quay County, New Mexico. All specimens date back to the Norian stage of the Late Triassic. The genus was named in 1995 after the American paleontologist Spencer G. Lucas.

<i>Paratypothorax</i> Genus of reptiles

Paratypothorax is an extinct genus of aetosaur, known from a single species, Paratypothorax andressorum. It was a broadly distributed member of the group found in Germany, North America, and possibly parts of Gondwana. The best specimens come from Germany, though for more than a century they were mistakenly considered phytosaur armor. Paratypothorax was a large and wide-bodied typothoracine aetosaur, as well as the namesake of the tribe Paratypothoracisini.

Tecovasuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur. It is known primarily from osteoderms found from the Tecovas Formation in Texas, which is Late Triassic in age, dating back to the lower Norian. Material is also known from several other localities of the Chinle Group in New Mexico and Arizona, such as older Carnian outcrops and younger Rhaetian outcrops. Specimens of Tecovasuchus have been collected from the Tecovas Formation, the Bluewater Creek Formation, and the Los Esteros Member of the Santa Rosa Formation.

Aetosaurinae is one of the two main clades of aetosaurs, the other being Desmatosuchia. It is a stem-based taxon defined as all aetosaurs more closely related to Aetosaurus than Desmatosuchus. Aetosaurinae currently comprises Aetosaurus, similar forms such as Coahomasuchus and Stenomyti, and the widespread and successful aetosaur clade Typothoracinae.

Doswelliids were not true archosaurs, but they were close relatives and some studies have considered them among the most derived non-archosaurian archosauriforms. They may have also been related to the Proterochampsidae, a South American family of crocodile-like archosauriforms.

It is mainly known from osteoderms, including the front half of an articulated carapace. Gorgotesuchus is typically considered a basal desmatosuchin, though alternative interpretations exist.

<i>Scutarx</i> Extinct genus of reptiles

Scutarx is an extinct genus of Aetosauriformes, most commonly regarded by its species name Scutarx deltatylus. Scutarx lived around 230 million years ago during the Carnian and Norian stage of the Late Triassic. Scutarx are “medium sized” paramedian osteoderms belonging to the clade Aetosauria, a heavily armored and more herbivorous cousin of crocodiles.

Apachesuchus is an extinct genus of aetosaur from the Late Triassic of New Mexico. It is only known from several paramedian osteoderms discovered in Quay County in eastern New Mexico. This area belongs to the late Norian-age Quay Member of the Redonda Formation. Unique among aetosaurs, its osteoderms are nearly completely smooth, without strong pits or grooves. The left dorsal paramedian has a relatively high width-to-length ration, suggesting that Apachesuchus is a wide-bodied aetosaur within the clade Typothoracinae.
