The Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), formerly Mithila University, is a public university in India. Beginning in 1972, the university initially functioned from the Mohanpur House at Sara Mohanpur village on the Darbhanga-Sakri route. In 1975, it was shifted to the campus belonging to Raj Darbhanga. [1]
The university is in Darbhanga town, Mithila, an ancient cultural region of North India that lies between the lower range of the Himalayas and the Ganges river. The university imparts education in fields such as humanities, social science, life science, commerce, and medicine, with both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. More than 400 faculties are engaged in teaching and research.
The institute has a residential campus of about 230 acres with modern facilities and support services for its students and faculty. The university has the privilege of having major Student unions such as NSUI, AISF, JAAP, JDU, RJD, and ABVP Student Unions.
Its jurisdiction extends over 4 districts -Begusarai, Darbhanga, Madhubani, and Samastipur.

Notable faculty alumni
Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly Benares Hindu University, is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and founded in 1916. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College, which had been founded by theosophist and future Indian Home Rule leader Annie Besant in 1898. By 1911 Besant was marginalised on the governing board of the College by Madan Mohan Malviya who preferred a more traditional Hinduism with its hereditary caste system to Besant's more theosophical one. Five years later Malaviya established the university with the support of the maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal.
Darbhanga is the fifth largest city and municipal corporation in the state of Bihar in India, and is considered an important city in North Bihar. It serves as the headquarters of the Darbhanga district and the Darbhanga division. It is held that the name Darbhanga has been derived from Dwar Banga or Dari – Banga, meaning the 'door of Bengal'.
Samastipur is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar in India. The district headquarters are located at Samastipur. The district occupies an area of 2904 km² and has a population of 4,261,566.
Lalit Narayan Mishra was an Indian politician who served as Minister of Railways in the government of India from 1973 to 1975. He was brought into politics by the first Chief Minister of Bihar, Sri Krishna Sinha, when he was made parliamentary secretary at his insistence to the First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1975, he died in a bomb blast at Samastipur railway station. The court case against the perpetrators was delayed for years and was finally completed in December 2014.

Ram Harsh Singh is an Indian practitioner of the Ayurveda system of alternative medicine and the founder vice chancellor of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Rajasthan Ayurved University. Nirmala S Maurya is the first woman Vice Chancellor of Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh who served the office from August 2020 till August 2023. Her father, Surendra Singh Kushwaha, was a professor in the physics department of Banaras Hindu University and also served as VC of Ranchi University, Jharkhand and Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Uttar Pradesh, and her brother Saket Kushwaha served as vice chancellor of Lalit Narayan Mithila University from 2014 to 2017 and also served as vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University from 2018 to 2024.
Dilip Kumar Choudhary is an Indian politician from Darbhanga Graduate Constituency in Bihar. He was a Member of the Bihar Legislative Council two times, since 2007 and 2014. From the year 1990 to 2002, he was a councillor of Darbhanga Municipal Corporation. He completed his master's degree in chemistry subject from Lalit Narayan Mithila University and Ph.D. from Allahabad University. Choudhary is a professor of chemistry in Chandradhari Mithila Vigyan Mahavidyalaya at Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga. Since February 2022, he is also principal of C.M. Science College along with the charge of C. M. Law College, Darbhanga. His father, Late Dr. Nilambar Chaudhary was also a Senior Leader of the Indian National Congress and a member of the Bihar Legislative Council multiple times from Darbhanga Graduate Constituency.
Mukesh Mishra born in Darbhanga is an Indian former professional karate player from Bihar and currently work as coach. He coached Lalit Narayan Mithila University Karate Team in All India Inter University Games, Bihar Karate Team in National School Games and National Federation Championships.
