Patliputra University (PPU) is a collegiate public state university located in Patna, Bihar, India. It was established by an act of the state legislature in 2018. As a collegiate university, its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and affiliated colleges.

History

In 2015, Bihar's education minister hinted that Magadh University (MU) may be split into two or three universities due to the difficulties faced in managing the colleges of oversized MU. In the month of July of the same year, then vice-chancellor of MU, Mohammad Ishtiyaque decided to strengthen the university's Patna branch office to reduce the student's necessity to visit the university headquarters situated at Bodh Gaya. As a part of the strengthening process, a committee was set up to monitor the expansion and growth of the Patna branch office. [1]

On 30 July 2016, Bihar cabinet approved Bihar State Universities (Amendment) Bill 2016 and made way for the creation of Patliputra University by bifurcating the Magadh University. [2] [3] A notice was issued in October 2017 inviting application from candidates for the posts of vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor. [4] More than 150 professors applied for the jobs of vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor. [5] On 19 March 2018, Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik appointed Girish Kumar Choudhary and Gulab Chand Ram Jaiswal as the pro-vice-chancellor and vice-chancellor of the Patliputra University, respectively, under the Bihar State University (Amendment) Act, 1976. [6]

Academics

Admitted students of Magadh University (MU) will be awarded degrees by the MU. [7] The university started operating academically from the 2018–19 academic year. [8] The programmes being offered at the university be the same as the ones being offered at Magadh University. [7]

The university plans to launch postgraduate departments in science, commerce and arts stream at university level after many of the postgraduate departments went to MU after the bifurcation. [9] Some of Patna's better institutions come under Patliputra University after its creation. [10]

Administration

Rakesh Kumar Singh is the vice-chancellor of the university whereas Prof. Ganesh mahto is the pro-vice-chancellor. [10] Bihar's governor serves as the chancellor of Patliputra University. [11] Nagendra Jha is the registrar and Manoj Kumar is the proctor. [12] [13]

Campus

The university is headquartered in Patna and administratively operate from Magadh University branch office on Kankarbagh old bypass in the Rajendra Nagar neighbourhood of Patna, [10] [14] whilst, its permanent campus will be located at Bakhtiyarpur. [15] Patliputra University's PG campus will be built in BS College, Danapur. Vice Chancellor Prof. RK Singh inspected the BS College regarding the construction of PG campus. [16]

Tarkeshwari Sinha was an Indian politician and independence activist from Bihar. Among the first female politicians of the country, she took active role in the Quit India Movement. At the age of 26, she was elected to the 1st Lok Sabha from Patna East constituency in 1952. Subsequently, she was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957, 1962 and 1967 from Barh constituency. She was the first female Deputy Finance Minister in the union cabinet led by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru from 1958 to 1964. She had also led a delegation to the U.N. and Tokyo. Gulzar’s critically acclaimed movie, Aandhi was partly inspired by Tarkeshwari Sinha, apart from Indira Gandhi.

Nalanda railway station, station code NLD, is a railway station and under Danapur railway division of East Central Railway. Nalanda is connected to metropolitan areas of India, by the Delhi–Kolkata main line via Mugalsarai–Patna route. Station is located in Nalanda city in Nalanda district in the Indian state of Bihar. B.D. College, Patna, also known as Bhuwaneshwari Dayal College, established in 1970, is a Professional degree college in Patna, Bihar. It is a constituent unit of Patliputra University. College offers undergraduate courses in Science, Commerce and Arts. This institution had a modest start on 10 March 1970, and it remained under Magadh University, Bodh Gaya in (1970-2018) presently it is under Patliputra University, Patna since 18 March 2018. It is managed as per provisions of the University Acts and Statutes prescribed by the UGC and promulgated by the State Government of Bihar. The college receives grants from the state government as well as the University Grants Commission for the payment of salary and infrastructural development. For fostering civic and social values among the students interactive sessions, outreaching activities and field study in surrounding areas are organised by the departments.

Shashi Pratap Shahi is an Indian academic, researcher, social activist, a renowned psephologist and an excellent administrator. His principal area of study is Political Science and International Relations. Professor Shahi has been teaching Political Science in different universities in Bihar since 1990. Presently Prof Shahi is serving as a Vice Chancellor of Magadh University Bodh Gaya Bihar.
