2024 Summer Olympics |
---|
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris were televised by a number of broadcasters throughout the world. As with previous years, Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) produced the world feed provided to local broadcasters for use in their coverage. [1] In most regions, broadcast rights to the 2022 and 2024 Olympics were packaged together, but some broadcasters obtained rights to further games as well.
In France, domestic rights to the 2024 Summer Olympics were owned by Warner Bros. Discovery (formerly Discovery Inc.) via Eurosport, with free-to-air coverage sub-licensed to the country's public broadcaster France Télévisions. [2]
The official Olympics website offered both live-streaming and recent recordings of the events in selected markets, particularly in Brazil, Russia (due to Russian broadcasters pulling out), and the Indian subcontinent. [3]
Although the IOC listed Telesport Russia as the nominal rights holder for Russia, [4] the main Russian and Belarusian broadcasters were not officially showing the Games in protest of the sanctions imposed on the two countries, which led to a reduced quota of 32 athletes that were listed as neutrals: Belarus and Russia last refused to purchase the broadcasting rights in 1984. [5] [6] The Associated Press noted on 27 July 2024 that Belarusian and Russian viewers were depending on satellite channels and streaming services of neighbouring countries (such as Kazakhstan) to get reasonable coverage of the Games. [7]
Chunghwa Telecom, which gained exclusive IPTV and streaming rights from Olympics domestic rights holder ELTA TV, reported that their streaming platform Hami Video experienced server crashes for the last 2 games during the men's double badminton knockout stage. Once when the Chinese Taipei male duos (Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin) successfully advanced to the gold medal matches, [8] and then again when they successfully won the gold medals as the viewership for the game grew rapidly. [9]
Additionally, many cable TV providers and even Taiwanese politicians were criticized about how ELTA TV shared the broadcasting rights other than CHT MOD and Hami Video/ELTA OTT, in which jeopardized the cable TV broadcast availability and even limited the games' coverage for free-to-air TV networks (such as the government-owned TBS network). Los Angeles will be the host city, with various events also scheduled to be held at other cities spread across the Greater Los Angeles area, plus two subsites in Oklahoma City. Due to rule changes on hosting made in 2019, these would be the final Olympic Games to be hosted in one city.
Colombia first formally participated at the Olympic Games in 1932, and has sent athletes to compete in all but one edition of the Summer Olympic Games since then, missing only the 1952 Games. Colombian athletes have won a total of 38 Olympic medals in eight different sports, with weightlifting and cycling as the most successful ones. Colombia is the third most successful South American country at the Olympic Games, after Brazil and Argentina respectively. The Colombian Olympic Committee was created in 1936 and recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1948.

Five bids were initially submitted for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Following withdrawals, two bidding cities—Paris and Los Angeles—were left in the process. In July 2017, the IOC agreed to award the 2024 and 2028 Games simultaneously. Los Angeles agreed to bid for the 2028 Games, effectively ceding the 2024 Games to Paris.

The Parade of Nations within the 2024 Summer Olympics opening ceremony took place on 26 July 2024 on the Seine river in Paris, France. Athletes and officials from each participating team marched into the Jardins du Trocadéro preceded by their flag and placard bearer. Each flag bearer was chosen either by the team's National Olympic Committee or by the athletes themselves. On 13 December 2021, it was announced that the opening ceremony would feature athletes being transported by boat from Pont d'Austerlitz to Pont d'Iéna along the Seine river. The 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) route passed landmarks such as the Louvre, Notre-Dame de Paris, and Place de la Concorde, and feature cultural presentations. The official protocol took place at a 30,000-seat "mini-stadium" at the Trocadéro. For the first time in Olympic history, the parade procedure was not held during a separate portion of the opening ceremony, with the parade being integrated during the artistic programme, which simultaneously allowed for the athletes to sail on their boats during the artistic portion.
