In 2001, a group of people gathered in the Phoenix, Arizona area with the intent of starting a drum and bugle corps (D&B). They formed the Board of Directors of the Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts, a non-profit organization with the goal "...of enhancing the culture of music, dance, and the performing arts in Arizona." They then formed The Academy Brass & Percussion Ensemble, which made numerous local appearances during the summers of 2001–03, including at the D&B competition the organization sponsors, the Southwest Corps Connection. [2]

In the summer of 2004, the corps added a color guard, changed the name to The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, and entered the field of competition. Marching a short season of only four weeks and six shows in Arizona and California, the corps was undefeated in Division II. [3] The next year, the corps expanded its boundaries, performing in 10 shows, including Drums Along the Rockies, in Denver, and was again undefeated in Division II. 2006 was The Academy's most successful season. The corps appeared in shows in seven states, including the DCI Division II/III World Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, where the corps capped their third undefeated season with the Division II title. [4]

In 2007, The Academy moved into Division I (now World Class) competition. That was their most successful season in the class placing 13th, until the 2016 corps finished 11th at the DCI World Championships. [5]

The Academy assembled a 100+ member brass, percussion, and auxiliary ensemble of members and alumni that performed outside University of Phoenix Stadium prior to the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIX and at the NFL Experience, "an interactive theme park of all things football," during the week of January 25–February 1, 2015. [6]

In 2016, The Academy had their most successful season since moving to World Class, placing in the top 12 at all three DCI regionals. At the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis, The Academy placed 11th, becoming the first corps to make its Finals debut since the Seattle Cascades in 2002.

Crossmen

LocationSan Antonio, TX
DivisionWorld Class
Founded1974
DirectorNatalie Steele
Championship titles1977 American Legion
1981 VFW
Website https://www.crossmen.org

The Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps was founded on October 1, 1974, by a merger of two suburban Philadelphia drum and bugle (D&B) corps, the Keystone Regiment and the 507 Hornets. The name "Crossmen" was chosen, from a list of 43 proposed names, by the members of the new corps in recognition of American Legion Post 507, which was named in honor of World War I veteran John Welsey Cross. Beginning in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the corps has, over the years, been based in several other communities. Their longest stays were in West Chester, Pennsylvania and Newark, Delaware. [7] [8]

The Crossmen were competitively successful from the start, winning the Eastern States (drum corps) Circuit Championship from 1975 to 1981. In 1977, the corps won the American Legion Junior D&B National Championship in Denver ("Nationals"). In 1981, they won the VFW Nationals in Philadelphia. [9]

In the winter of 1996, on the verge of folding, the corps became one of the programs sponsored by Youth Education in the Arts (YEA!), an organization which also included The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps and the United States Scholastic Band Association. As a member of YEA!, the corps was then based in Allentown, PA. In the autumn of 2006, the corps relocated to San Antonio and separated from YEA! in late August 2007. [10]

The Crossmen have been DCI Top Twelve Finalists twenty-nine (29) times; the first time in 1977, the latest in 2019. [9]

The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps (also known as "BD" and "Devs") is based in Concord, California. The corps has finished first or second for the past 13 seasons (2007–19) and has placed no lower than fifth since finishing third in 1975. They also hold the record for the highest score in DCI history, winning the 2014 DCI World Championship title with a score of 99.65. [11] The Blue Devils are the current DCI Champions, with an unmatched record of 19 titles to date.

Of special note among the Blue Devils nineteen World Championships are those of 1982, 1994, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2017 when the corps went through the entire season without suffering a defeat. 2009 also marked the first season that one organization won multiple titles, when the Blue Devils won World Class and the Blue Devils B won Open Class having also done it the next year in 2010 and then again in 2014. Over the years, the Devils have often made use of jazz and Latin music repertoires, notably Bill Reddie's Channel One Suite (made famous by Buddy Rich) and charts from the music of Chick Corea and Chuck Mangione and that written for Stan Kenton's big band. Because of their musical style choices, the Devils are one of the corps most associated with jazz. [12] [13] [14] [15]

In 2014, the Blue Devils won their sixteenth DCI World Championship and recorded their sixth undefeated season. At the DCI Finals in Indianapolis on August 9, the corps received a record high score of 99.650. [16] In doing so, they beat the second place Bluecoats by a margin of 2.475, bested the previous high of the 2002 Cavaliers and 2005 Cadets by half a point, and earned a perfect score from seven of the eleven judges. [17] [18] The Blue Devils are also the only corps to have crossed the 99-point threshold twice in DCI Championship history achieving a 99.050 in 2009 with 1930, and a 99.650 in 2014 with Felliniesque.

On August 8, 2015, the Blue Devils won their seventeenth DCI Championship. It was the corps' first come-from-behind win, after finishing preliminaries in fourth place because of a penalty, trailing Carolina Crown, Bluecoats, and The Cadets and semifinals in second, behind Carolina Crown. [19]

In the Blue Devils' 2017 program, "Metamorph," voiceovers were used from a newly-discovered audio tape recording of the late former director Jerry Seawright addressing the crowd at the Blue Devils' first appearance as a drum and bugle corps in 1972. [20] [21]

Sponsorship

The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by BD Performing Arts, a 501 (c)(3) musical organization. As such, it has a Board of Directors, directors, and staff assigned to carry out the organization's mission. The CEO is Shaun Gallant and the Corps Director is Pat Seidling. [22] [23]

BD Performing Arts also sponsors the Blue Devils B corps, the Blue Devils C corps, the Blue Devils Open Class and A Class Winter Guards programs, the Diablo Wind Symphony, and BD Entertainment.

In 2015, BD Performing Arts added the Blue Devils International Corps, a 97-member unit made up of alumni of the Blue Devils and 8 other DCI World Class corps. The corps spent more than a month traveling and performing in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Switzerland, concluding with 9 days and 15 performances of their 7–minute show at the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland.
