The Eisner Awards have been presented since 1988, but there were no Eisner Awards in 1990 due to balloting mix-ups. [1] The awards ceremony has been held at San Diego Comic-Con since 1991.

This award was previously known as "Best Painter" from 1993 to 1999, as "Best Painter/Multimedia Artist" from 2000 to 2019 and as Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art) as of 2023.
In 2001, the judging panel chose to drop Best Comics-Related Periodical from the ballot; [7] the category was restored in 2002.

Colleen Doran is an American writer-artist and cartoonist. She illustrated hundreds of comics, graphic novels, books and magazines, including the autobiographical graphic novel of Marvel Comics editor and writer Stan Lee entitled Amazing Fantastic Incredible Stan Lee, which became a New York Times bestseller. She adapted and did the art for the short story "Troll Bridge" by Neil Gaiman, which also became a New York Times bestseller. The Compuserve Comics and Animation Forum's Don Thompson Awards were given for achievement in comic books, comic strips, and animation. Initiated in 1992, they were originally known as the Compuserve Comics and Animation Forum Awards for the CompuServe forum that created and gave out the award. In 1994, after the death of long-time comics enthusiast and publisher Don Thompson, the awards were renamed in Thompson's honor. The final awards were presented in 1998.
