The Machinga are a Bantu ethnic and linguistic group native to Kilwa District of Lindi Region on the southern Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania. In 1987 the Machinga population was estimated to be 36,000 people. [1]

The district is named after the medieval Swahili city state of Kilwa Kisiwani. According to the 2012 census, the district has a total population of 190,744. By 2022, the population had increased to 297,676.

The district seat (capital) is the town and ward of Mtama. The district is known for the Tendaguru Formation, the richest Late Jurassic strata of fossils in Africa. The Chichiri Museum, also known as the Museum of Malawi, is a historical and cultural museum located in Blantyre, Malawi. Strictly Museum of Malawi refers to a group of five museums but Chichiri Museum uses the name due to the breadth of its exhibits.
Makonde, or Kimakonde, is the language spoken by the Makonde, an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Makonde is a central Bantu language closely related to Yao. The Matambwe (Matembwe) and Mabiha (Maviha) dialects are divergent, and may not be Makonde.

Songo Mnara Island is an island located in Pande Mikoma ward in Kilwa District in Lindi Region of Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast. The island is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Songo Mnara, one of seven world heritage sites in the country. In total, the island covers an area of 8.5 km2 (3.3 sq mi), and has an average elevation of 9 m (30 ft). The Island is the ancestral home of the Machinga people.
Sanje ya Kati Island or Kati Island is an island located in Pande Mikoma ward in Kilwa District in Lindi Region of Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast. The island is home to a medieval Swahili ruin of Sanje ya Kati. The island has an average elevation of 14 m (46 ft). The Island is the ancestral home of the Machinga people.
