The Marcapata District is one of the twelve districts in the Quispicanchi Province in Peru. Created on January 20, 1869, its capital is Marcapata.

Geography

The Willkanuta mountain range traverses the province. Some of the highest peaks of the district are Chumpi, Hatun Ñañu Punta, Wila Jaqhi and Yayamari. Other mountains are listed below: [1]

Yayamari mountain in Peru

Yayamari is a mountain in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Andes of Peru, about 6,049 metres (19,846 ft) high. It is situated in the Cusco Region, Canchis Province, Pitumarca District, and in the Quispicanchi Province, Marcapata District. Yayamari lies northeast of Sibinacocha, north of the lake named Amayuni and northwest of Huila Aje and Condoriquiña.

Ananta (Cusco)

Ananta is a mountain in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Andes of Peru, about 5,200 metres (17,060 ft) high. It is located in the Cusco Region, Quispicanchi Province, Marcapata District. It lies northeast of the higher peak of Pajo Ananta.

Istalla mountain in Peru

Istalla is a mountain in the Andes of Peru, about 5,400 metres (17,717 ft) high, situated in the Vilcanota mountain range south east of Cusco. It is located in the Cusco Region, Canchis Province, Pitumarca District, and in the Quispicanchi Province, Marcapata District. Istalla lies northeast of the mountain Condoriquiña.

Machu Apachita mountain in Peru

Machu Apachita is a mountain in the Andes of Peru, about 4,800 m (15,700 ft) high. It is located in the Cusco Region, Quispicanchi Province, on the border of the districts of Camanti and Marcapata. It is situated southeast of Wisk'achani.

Quri Pukara mountain in Peru

Wanakuni (Quispicanchi) mountain in Peru

Wanakuni is a mountain in the Andes of Peru, about 4,800 metres (15,748 ft) high. It is situated in the Cusco Region, Quispicanchi Province, Marcapata District. Wanakuni lies southwest of Machu Apachita and northwest of Piki Mach'ay. The little lake of the mountain is named Q'umirqucha.

Yanaqucha (Quispicanchi)

Yanaqucha is a mountain in the Andes of Peru, about 4,800 metres (15,748 ft) high. It is situated in the Cusco Region, Quispicanchi Province, on the border of the districts of Marcapata and Camanti. It lies northeast of Piki Mach'ay.

Yana Urqu (Hapu Punta)

Yana Urqu is a mountain in the Willkanuta mountain range in the Andes of Peru, about 4,800 metres (15,748 ft) high. It is situated in the Cusco Region, Quispicanchi Province, Marcapata District. Yana Urqu lies northwest of the mountain Q'illu Wallayuq and northeast of Hapu Punta between the Suralla valley in the west and the Puka Puka valley in the east.

Ethnic groups

The people in the district are mainly indigenous citizens of Quechua descent. Quechua is the language which the majority of the population (87.29%) learnt to speak in childhood, 12.33% of the residents started speaking using the Spanish language (2007 Peru Census). [2]

Q'umirqucha lies south-east of the mountain Wisk'achani and the larger lake Warusqucha, north-east of the village Q'umir Qucha (Ccomer Cocha).
