The Maritime Gendarmerie (French : Gendarmerie maritime) is a component of the French National Gendarmerie under operational control of the chief of staff of the French Navy. It employs 1,157 personnel and operates around thirty patrol boats and high-speed motorboats distributed on the littoral waterways of France. [3] Like their land-based colleagues the Gendarmes Maritime are military personnel carry out policing operations in addition to their primary role as a coast guard service. They also carry out provost duties within the French Navy.

The uniforms and insignia of the Gendarmerie Maritime are very similar to those of the French Navy, but the ranks used are those of the rest of the Gendarmerie (which are the same as the traditional ranks of the French Cavalry).

Organisation

The Maritime Gendarmerie is commanded by a colonel who is assisted by a staff located in Paris. The coastguard is articulated in 3 groupings, 7 companies and 64 units (brigades of research, brigades of monitoring of the littoral, group of safety of the protected zones, group of monitoring of intervention and reinforcement, patrol craft, coastal high-speed motorboats of maritime surveillance) whose geographical distribution is as follows: [3]

Personnel

Commissioned officers are recruited from holders of a master's degree; non-commissioned officers from holders of a high school diploma giving access to university studies; auxiliary gendarmes are recruited without any specific educational prerequisite. Members of the maritime gendarmerie are recruited among officers, nco's and auxiliary gendarmes with a few years of general gendarmerie service. Certificate of competency for sea or inland water navigation and training in scuba diving is a merit for those who wants to join. Within the maritime gendarmerie there exists further specializations such as coxswain, mechanic, diver, underwater investigation technician, maritime and port security operative and watch-keeping officer. Vedette côtière de surveillance maritime

The Vedettes côtières de surveillance maritime are swift craft of the French Gendarmerie maritime. 24 boats of the type have been commissioned. They are based in various harbours of France, and are used for coast guard duties ranging from rescue to military tasks, including monitoring of pollution, sea police, and interception of illegal immigrants and drug traffickers.

<i>DEntrecasteaux</i>-class patrol ship

The D'Entrecasteaux class is a class of oceanic patrol ships of the French Navy. The ship's designation is Bâtiment multi-mission (B2M) in French, meaning "multi-mission ship", and sometimes dubbed the "Swiss Army knife of the Navy". The ship is designed to perform sovereignty, law enforcement and logistics missions. The class replaced the aging BATRAL-class landing ships in some of these roles. The D'Entrecasteaux-class perform similar roles in French overseas territories that the four Loire-class ships perform in Metropolitan France.

Athos was a patrol vessel that was originally built for the French Navy. The pair of patrol vessels, Athos and Aramis, were sponsored by the commune of Auch in Gers until 2012. The commune of Saint-Martin-Sainte-Catherine in Creuse, has been the sponsor since 23 February 2013. Athos was transferred to the Maritime Gendarmerie at the beginning of 2016. The only French Navy vessel to be entirely made of beech wood, her hull was capable of withstanding M5 model 4 style torpedoes.

Patrouilleur Outre-mer

The Patrouilleurs Outre-mer (POM), or Félix Éboué class, are a class of offshore patrol vessels of the French Navy. They are to be based at Nouméa, Tahiti and La Réunion, replacing the P400-class patrol vessels which are nearing the end of their service. At 1,300 tonnes, the POM class ships have four times the displacement of the P400 and possess a wider range of capabilities. The lead ship, Auguste Bénébig, was commissioned in May 2023, with delivery of all six units ordered expected by 2025.

<i>Confiance</i>-class patrol vessel

The Confiance class or Patrouilleurs Antilles Guyane (PAG), previously called "Patrouilleurs légers guyanais" (PLG, "Light Guyane patrol vessel") until January 2019 is a type of high sea patrol vessel developed and built by Socarenam based upon plans by Mauric. They are in service with the French Navy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nexter Narwhal</span> French remote-controlled naval gun

The Nexter Narwhal is a type of remotely operated naval artillery turret made by the French company Nexter. It houses a 20 mm autocannon based on the Nexter M621 and M693. The name "Narwhal" is a backronym of "NAval Remote Weapon, Highly Accurate, Lightweight". It is designed to fit warships of all types ranging from patrol boats to frigates to aircraft carriers, notably as a close-quarters self-defence weapon.
