Melattur is a town in Malappuram district of Kerala. [1] It is situated on the banks of the Velliyar river. The name Melattur came from the Malayalam words 'Mele' (above), 'Aaru' (river) and 'Ooru' (place); i.e., 'place near upstream'. There are places named Edayattur (place near middle of the river), and Keezhattur (place near to the downstream) on the banks of the river Olippuzha. The town is well connected to Perinthalmanna (17 km [11 mi]), Manjeri (23 km [14 mi]), Mannarkkad (24 km [15 mi]), Pandikkad (8 km [5.0 mi]) and Karuvarakundu (11 km [6.8 mi]) by road. Melattur Railway Station is a minor railway station on the Nilambur - Shornur Line.

This place was originally part of the Valluvanad Swaroopam dynasty. [2]

Valluvanad was an erstwhile princely state in the present state of Kerala, that extended from the Nila River (Bharathappuzha) in the South to the Panthaloor Mala in the North. On the west, it was bounded by the Arabian Sea at Ponnani and on the east by the Attapadi Hills.

Melattur is situated on the Perumbilavu - Nilambur State Highway 39. Karuvarakundu - Melattur State Highway 70 ends at Melattur by joining Kumaramputhur - Olippuzha Road. Manjeri - Olippuzha - Kumaramputhur Road also passes through the town and one of the shortest route between Kozhikode and Palakkad is via Manjeri - Melattur - Mannarkkad.

From Melattur Panchayat bus stand, buses are available to Perinthalmanna, Pandikkad, Manjeri, Kozhikode, Mannarkkad, Palakkad, Coimbatore, Thuvvur, Edayattur, Karuvarakundu, Kalikavu, Nilambur, Edathanattukara, Moonadi, Kalpetta, Thamarassery, Pattambi, Vytilla Hub, Guruvayur, Thrissur and Kanjirappalli.

Melattur Railway Station is a minor Railway Station on the Nilambur - Shornur Line, trains are available from here to Nilambur, Shornur, Palakkad, Kottayam and Kochuveli.

Kadalundi River (Kadalundipuzha) is one of the four major rivers flowing through Malappuram district in the Indian state of Kerala. The other three are the Chaliyar, the Bharathappuzha and the Tirur River. This rain-fed river is 130 kilometres (81 mi) long and one of the most important rivers in the district. Kadalundi River is also the sixth longest river in Kerala. Kadalundi River passes through [Karuvarakundu, Tuvvur [Melattur, Kerala|Melattur]], Pandikkad, Manjeri, Malappuram, Panakkad, Parappur, Vengara, Tirurangadi, Parappanangadi, Vallikkunnu, and empties itself into Arabian sea at Kadalundi Nagaram in Vallikkunnu on the northwestern border of the district. It is formed by the confluence of the Olippuzha River and the Veliyar River. The Kadalundi originates from the Western Ghats at the western border of the Silent Valley and flows through the district of Malappuram. It has two main tributaries namely Olipuzha and Veliyar. Olipuzha and Veliyar merges together to become Kadalundi River near Melattur. Kadalundi River traverses through the historical regions of Eranad and Valluvanad. The Kadalundi River drains an area of 1274 km2 and has a length of 120 km. The ancient port of Tyndis, which was the second-largest trading port of Chera dynasty, only after to Muziris, is identified with the mouth of this river at Vallikunnu. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary spreads over a cluster of islands where the Kadalundipuzha River flows into the Arabian Sea. There are over a hundred species of native birds and around 60 species of migratory birds in large numbers annually.

Karuvarakundu is a semi-urban area in the eastern part of Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It is situated 32 kilometres (20 mi) east of Manjeri, 26 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of Perinthalmanna and 30 km southeast of Nilambur. The Olippuzha River, a tributary of the Kadalundipuzha, flows through the town. Karuvarakundu is close to the Western Ghats and hence prone to landslides.

Pulamanthole is a Panchayath in Malappuram district of Kerala, India. It is situated on the banks of the Kunthippuzha. The river separates Malappuram and Palakkad districts, a new bridge has been built across it recently.

The Nilambur–Shoranur line is a 66 kilometres (41 mi)-long single-line, electrified broad-gauge (1676 mm) railway spur branch line of the Indian Railways connecting Nilambur Road railway station in Malappuram district with Shoranur Junction in Palakkad district in the state of Kerala. It is a branch line administered by the Palakkad railway division of the Southern Railway zone and one of the shortest broad-gauge railway lines in India. It was laid by the British in the colonial era for the transportation of Nilambur Teak logs to the United Kingdom through Kozhikode. The line is electrified and was inspected by railway officials from Southern Railway on 30 March 2024. With this, the Palakkad division achieved 100% electrification.

Cholakkulam is a village in Malappuram district of Kerala. It is situated in Melattur. The name Cholakkulam came from the Malayalam words 'Chola' (Stream), 'Kulam' (Pond); i.e., 'Place where is pond with stream'. The village is well connected to Perinthalmanna (17 km), Mannarkkad (24 km), Manjeri (23 km) and Karuvarakundu (11 km). The shortest route connecting Kozhikode with Palakkad passes through this village.

The Government Higher Secondary School Pandikkad, Malappuram is one of the biggest schools in Malappuram district, Kerala, India. It has over 800 students in Higher Secondary and over 2500 students in High School and Upper Primary Sections. Over 500 students on average appear for the Class X examinations every year. The Higher Secondary wing have seven batches in Science, Commerce and Humanities streams.
