Nestor was a stern-wheel driven steamboat that operated on the Cowlitz and Columbia rivers from 1902 to 1929. Nestor was primarily operated as a towboat, and did most of the towing work on the Cowlitz River. During the 1920s Nestor was part of a small fleet of towboats operated out of Rainier, Oregon by Capt. Milton Smith.
Nestor was built at Catlin, Washington, (now west Kelso) in 1902 by Capt. C.P. Stayton (1846-1932), and named after his son, Nestor W. Stayton (1878-1957), who himself later became a steamboat captain and Columbia river pilot. [1]
C.P. Stayton had been a Methodist minister, who originally arrived in the Pacific Northwest in 1873, where he served as a missionary in Yakima, Washington until 1889, when he came to Catlin, which is now west Kelso, Washington. [2] [3] At Kelso, Stayton built the first Methodist church, and then entered the steamboat business, building Nestor and holding an ownership interest in the Kelso-Catlin ferry, which crossed the Cowlitz river before it was bridged. [2]
Nestor was 82.4 feet long exclusive of the extension over the stern, called the “fantail” on which the stern-wheel was mounted. [1] Nestor had a beam (width) of 19.6 feet, exclusive of the guards, which were long heavy protective timbers running along the outside of the top of the hull on both sides. [1] Depth of hold was 5.0 feet. [1] The overall size of the vessel was 133 gross and 78 registered tons. [1] The twin-horizontally mounted single-cylinder steam engines generated 150 indicated horsepower. [1] The number of crew required was listed as five. [1] The official merchant vessel registry number was 130998. [1] [4]
Nestor was originally owned by the Columbia & Cowlitz River Transportation Company. [5] For many years it was worked as a towboat on the Cowlitz River. [4] Later, under Captain Milton Smith, Nestor engaged in towing work on the Columbia River. [4]
In late 1903 Nestor was rebuilt at Rainier, Oregon, reducing the vessels overall size from 133 to 97 gross tons. [5] The purpose was to lower the required number of crew, with craft of less than 100 tons having to carry much fewer crew than craft over 100 tons. [5] The reduction consisted of reducing the size of the cabin structure, called the “house” and leaving the lower, or “freight” deck, open on the sides. [5]
Nestor handled most of the towing business on the Cowlitz river from 1902 to the 1920s. [6] The company added the shallow-draft sternwheeler Cowlitz in 1917. [6] Milton Smith moved the company's headquarters from Kelso to Rainier, Oregon. [6]
In November 1913 Nestor was offered for sale to the Port of Portland commission for the price of $9,000.00. [7] However the port decided to buy the sternwheeler Pronto for the same price, Pronto having served under lease as a dredge tender for several months. [7]
On February 28, 1914, Jack Pferdner, captain of the steamer Agnes, was serving on Nestor while Agnes was temporarily out of service. [8] Nestor was towing logs. [8] Near Prescott about 3 miles upriver from Rainier, some logs broke loose. [8] Pferdner walked out on the log tow to secure the loose logs. [8] This was called “dogging”. [8] The log Pferdner was walking on rolled, and he was thrown head-first into the river. [8] Pferdner came up and tried to grab on to the log, but it kept rolling, and he could not get a grip. [8] Capt James Peck, in charge of Nestor, yelled at Pferdner to get to the end of the log, but by this time, Pferdner was too exhausted to comply. [8] He let go of the log and sank under the water, and was not seen again. [8] Grappling hooks were used to search, all afternoon, for Pferdner's body, but the only thing that was found was the hatchet that Pferdner had been holding when he was thrown into the water. [8]
On October 4, 1915, Nestor’s chief engineer, Sebastian Hartman, then 55 years old, dropped dead in the U.S. Customs House in Portland. [9] Hartman had just exited the elevator on the second floor, on his way to visit a steamboat inspector. [9]
On Tuesday, January 8, 1918, Nestor was towing a pile driver on the Cowlitz River when a serious accident occurred. [10] Nestor was on the way upstream, with the driver to be used to replace dolphins and pilings at lumber camps. [10]
As the steamer and tow passed under a power line north of the Cowlitz County bridge, the pile driver, 75 feet high, snagged on a live electric wire strung across the channel at a point about 15 down from the top of the driver. [10] One man was killed and two others were severely burned. [10]
Two days later, A.E. Hayes filed a formal complaint with Colonel Zinn, of the Corps of Engineers, requesting that the height of the wires be investigated. [10] Hayes also alleged that he had been told by a representative of the North Coast Power Company that the current was to have been cut off when the tow passed. [10]
In early March 1919, Captain Milton Smith, of Rainier, Oregon, took over the Collins and Ostrander shares of the Columbia & Cowlitz River Transportation Company. [6]
On November 7, 1920, Nestor, while moored at Rainier, Nestor caught fire and was nearly destroyed. [11] Nestor had been tied up to the dock owned by Capt. Milton Smith. [11] The fire was not discovered until 4:00 a.m., and when it was, Nestor was set adrift to keep the blaze from spreading to two other vessels at the same dock. [11] The fire was eventually extinguished and the Nestor was beached. [11] The hull was not damaged, and Nestor was rebuilt and placed back in service on April 10, 1921. [12]
By March 1922, the Milton Smith flotilla consisted of Nestor, Cowlitz, Service (ex-Inland Empire, built in 1908), and Olympian (ex-Telegraph), built in 1903 and once one of the fastest steamers on Puget Sound. [13]
Nestor was abandoned in 1929. [14]
Sarah Dixon was a wooden sternwheel-driven steamboat operated by the Shaver Transportation Company on the Columbia and lower Willamette rivers from 1892 to 1926. Originally Sarah Dixon was built as a mixed use passenger and freight vessel, and was considered a prestige vessel for the time.
Coquille was a steamboat built in 1908 for service on the Coquille River and its tributaries. Coquille served as a passenger vessel from 1908 to 1916, when the boat was transferred to the lower Columbia River. Coquille was reconstructed into a log boom towing boat, and served in this capacity from 1916 to 1935 or later.
Emma Hayward commonly called the Hayward, was a steamboat that served in the Pacific Northwest. This vessel was once one of the finest and fastest steamboats on the Columbia River and Puget Sound. As newer vessels came into service, Emma Hayward was relegated to secondary roles, and, by 1891, was converted into a Columbia river tow boat.
Pomona was a steamboat which operated on the Willamette, Columbia and Cowlitz rivers from 1898 to 1940. Pomona was specially designed to operate in low water conditions such as typically prevailed in the summer months in Oregon. Pomona was one of the few steamers that could regularly navigate to Corvallis, Oregon, which was the practical head of navigation on the Willamette. In 1926, Pomona was substantially rebuilt, and served afterwards as a towboat. In 1940, Pomona was converted into an unpowered floating storehouse.
Cowlitz was a shallow-draft sternwheeler built for service on the Cowlitz River in southwestern Washington State. The vessel also served on the Columbia River. Cowlitz was in service from 1917 until September 1931, when, not far from The Dalles, Oregon, it sank in the Columbia river in a storm.
Regulator was a sternwheel-driven steamboat built in 1891 which operated on the Columbia River until 1906, when it was destroyed by explosion which killed two of its crew, while on the ways undergoing an overhaul at St. Johns, Oregon.
Bonita was a steamboat which operated on the Willamette and Yamhill rivers. This boat was renamed Metlako in 1902, and operated under that name until 1924 on the Columbia River and its tributaries, the Cowlitz, Lewis and Lake rivers. In 1924, Metlako was renamed B. H. Smith Jr., operating under that name until 1931, when the steamer was abandoned. As Bonita, in September 1900, this vessel was the first steamer to pass through the Yamhill locks.
Wenat was a stern-wheel steamboat that, under the name Swan, was built and operated, briefly, on the Tualatin River, in the state of Oregon. In 1858, Swan was sold, moved to the lower Willamette River, renamed Cowlitz, and placed on a route between Portland, Oregon the Cowlitz River.
Robert Young was a stern-wheel driven steamboat that operated on the Columbia and Willamette rivers from 1918 to 1935. This vessel was originally named Nespelem, and operated under that name until 1920. From 1920 to 1935, this vessel was owned by the Western Transportation Company or one of its subsidiaries, and was employed primarily in service to paper mills.
No Wonder was a stern-wheel driven steamboat that operated on the Willamette, Columbia and Cowlitz rivers from 1889 to 1930. No Wonder was originally built in 1877 as Wonder, which was dismantled in 1888, with components being shifted over to a new hull, which when launched in late 1889 was called No Wonder.
Telephone was a sternwheel-driven steamboat built in 1884 by Captain Uriah Bonsor "U.B." Scott for service on the Columbia River. Reputedly the fastest steamboat in the world in its time, Telephone served on the Columbia River and San Francisco Bay. Telephone was rebuilt at least twice. The first time was after a fire in 1887 which nearly destroyed the vessel. The reconstructed and much larger second vessel was sometimes referred to as Telephone No. 2. The third vessel, Telephone No. 3, built in 1903 and using components from the second steamer was larger but little used during its time on the Columbia river.
Gazelle was a gasoline powered launch that operated on the Willamette and Columbia river from 1905 to 1911. For short periods of time Gazelle was operated on the Oregon Coast, on Yaquina Bay and also as an off-shore fishing vessel, in the Coos Bay area.
Governor Newell was a sternwheel-driven steamboat that operated from 1883 to 1902 in the Pacific Northwest.
La Center was a small stern-wheel steamboat that operated from 1912 to 1931, mostly on the Lewis and Lake rivers in southwest Washington, on a route to and from Portland, Oregon along the lower Columbia and lower Willamette rivers.
Northwest was a steamboat that operated on the Columbia, Cowlitz and lower Willamette rivers from 1889 to 1907. In 1907 Northwest was transferred to Alaska, where it sank on the Skeena River
Joseph Kellogg was a stern-wheel driven steamboat that operated on the Willamette, Columbia, and Cowlitz rivers for the Kellogg Transportation Company. It was named after the company's founder, Joseph Kellogg (1812-1903). The sternwheeler Joseph Kellogg was built in 1881 at Portland, Oregon.
Chester was a shallow draft steamboat built in 1897 that ran until 1917, mostly on the Cowlitz River in southwestern Washington.
Undine was a sternwheel-driven steamboat that operated from 1887 to 1935 on the Columbia and lower Willamette rivers. From 1935 to 1940 the same vessel was operated under the name The Dalles.
Telegraph was a sternwheel-driven steamboat built in 1903 in Everett, Washington. Except for the summer of 1905, from 1903 to 1912, Telegraph served in Puget Sound, running mainly on the route from Seattle to Everett, and also from Seattle to Tacoma and Olympia, Washington.
The Callendar Navigation Company, sometimes seen as the Callendar Transportation Company, started in business in the early 1900s. Callendar was formed in the early 1900s, and was based in Astoria, Oregon. Callender was to become one of six large towing companies of the Columbia and Willamette rivers in the early decades of the 1900s, the others being Shaver Transportation, Smith Transportation, Hosford, Knappton Towing Co., and Willamette and Columbia River Towing Co. In 1922, Callendar Navigation merged with Knappton Towboat Co., which existed, with a name change in 1990, and which became part of Foss Marine in 1993.
