According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 979.6 square miles (2,537.2 km2), of which 886.1 square miles (2,295.0 km2) is land and 93.5 square miles (242.2 km2), or 9.55%, is water.
The territory consists of 28 townships plus the former town of Centerville.

There were 1,044 housing units at an average density of 1.2 per square mile (0.46/km2). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory was 95.25% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 3.47% Native American, 0.55% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 232 households, out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
