The Order of Freedom of Barbados is a national honour established by the Order of Freedom of Barbados Act 2019 by the Parliament of Barbados. [1] As part within the overarching Order of Barbados, it ranks higher than the Order of the Republic, [2] but is below the separate and supreme Order of National Heroes.

Officers and classes

The Order consists of one Class, which is not named in the Act. There is no limit as to how many appointments can be made to each grade each year, except in regard to honorary members, whose limit is set to two a year; appointments are made each year on Independence Day (30 November) by the president on the advice of the Prime Minister. [1]

Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "FB", which means "Freedom of Barbados", and to the style The Most Honourable . The insignia of the Order is set by the Prime Minister. [1]

Jamhuri Day is a national holiday in Kenya, celebrated on 12 December each year. Jamhuri is the Swahili word for "republic" and the holiday officially marks the date when Kenya became an independent country on 12 December 1963, six months and eleven days after gaining internal self-rule on 1 June 1963 from the United Kingdom. Kenya later became a republic, with the inauguration of Jomo Kenyatta as president taking place on 12 December 1964, exactly one year after Kenya attained independence in 1963. Kenyatta, having previously been sworn in as prime minister, continued as prime minister of newly independent Kenya, before assuming the position of president one year after Independence Day.

The Barbados National Honours and Decorations system is similar to that of the United Kingdom. Likewise, it consists of three types of award – honours, decorations and medals. Appointments are made on a yearly basis on Independence Day by the president of Barbados.

Orders, decorations, and medals of Kenya are awarded by the President of Kenya "in recognition of outstanding or distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities". Awards are made by the president upon the advice of a National Honours and Awards Committee in the president's office.
