Orders, decorations, and medals of Ethiopia

Orders, decorations, and medals of Ethiopia are awards of the government of Ethiopia which are typically issued for sustained meritorious service, whether it be in a civilian capacity or in their capacity in the Ethiopian National Defense Force. They are governed by the laws of Ethiopia on awards.

Ethiopian Empire and modern era

During the socialist era in Ethiopia from 1974 to 1991, after the abolishment of the Empire and the institution of the Derg (later the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia), few Imperial Orders or Decorations were issued. During preparations for the return of the Ethiopian monarchy, and upon the death of Emperor Amha Selassie, the Crown Council now gained responsibility over Imperial Orders and Decorations. The following orders comprise all Imperial Honours sanctioned by the Crown Council of Ethiopia: [1]

THE MEDAL OF HERO OF SOCIALIST ETHIOPIAThe Medal of Hero of Socialist Ethiopia is the highest award that may be bestowed upon an Ethiopian individual, military unit or group that has performed unparalleled feats of bravery in a battlefield.On a five-pointed star is a red circular background on which the hammer and the sickle emblem is engraved which in turn is displayed against a background of an ornamented five-pointed surface on which appear two crossed swords held together by a wrea1h of olive leaves. THE MEDAL OF GREATLY DISTINGUISHED FEATS OF BRAVERYThe Medal of Greatly Distinguished Feats of Bravery is an award, that may be bestowed upon an Ethiopian who has achieved beyond the call of ordinary duty, feats of extraordinary bravery on the battlefield.On a five-pointed star is a red circular background on which the hammer and the sickle emblem is engraved which in turn is displayed against a background of an ornamented five-pointed surface on which appear two crossed swords held together by a wreath of olive leaves. THE MEDAL OF DISTINGUISHED FEATS OF BRAVERY 1st rankThe Medal of Distinguished Feats of Bravery 1st Rank may be awarded to an Ethiopian who has, beyond the call of ordinary duty, achieved very honorable feats of bravery on the battlefield.On a five-pointed star is a red circular background on which the hammer and the sickle emblem is engraved which in tum is displayed against a background of an ornamented five-pointed surface on which appear two crossed swords held together by a wreath of olive leaves, On the suspender are inscribed the words: "For Courageous Feats of Bravery."copper35mmgreen with a single yellow vertical line in the middle32 x 12 mm
THE MEDAL OF THE WOUNDEDThe Medal of the Wounded shall be awarded to a person wounded on the battlefield.On a circular surface on which is engraved the emblem of the hammer, and the sickle are a heart design made from red enamel, crossed rifles, a wreath of olive leaves and a star.
