Parnell railway station is a station serving the inner-city suburb of Parnell in Auckland, New Zealand. It is situated on the Newmarket Line, approximately 600m north of Parnell Tunnel, and is located in the Waipapa Valley adjacent to Auckland Domain. It serves Southern Line and Western Line trains.
The station opened on 12 March 2017 with relatively basic facilities and initially serving a limited number of lines. [3] Future development will involve building a second pedestrian underpass under the tracks to provide step-free access to the platforms, and constructing several new paths to provide more direct access to Auckland Domain, Parnell Town Centre and the University of Auckland.
It was originally intended that the station would eventually serve all three lines which pass through it. This was contingent on the removal of the Sarawia Street level crossing in Newmarket, removing the signalling constraints which affected the line. [4] A bridge built to replace the level crossing, linking Laxon Terrace with nearby Cowie Street, [5] allowed the removal of the crossing.
After a plan to lease part of the area as a bus depot was cancelled, [6] KiwiRail and Auckland Council were asked in 2010 by the outgoing Auckland Regional Council (ARC) to make an early start on construction of the proposed station, which was to cost $13 million or more, to ensure that there would not need to be costly extra work after the electrification of the line as part of the Auckland railway electrification. [7] It was proposed that several million dollars saved during the upgrade of the Newmarket station be allocated to this new station. [6]
Three station locations were proposed by ARC staff - including at the Parnell Bridge Overpass, Carlaw Park, and Cheshire Street. [8]
Lobbying by the Parnell Business Association, [9] local residents, and councillor Mike Lee [10] saw the Cheshire Street location chosen for the station. The new location was suggested in order to serve as a "niche station for visitors to the heritage Parnell precinct and the Auckland War Memorial Museum." [11] The location of the station has been criticised for its poor accessibility and perceived weaker outcomes. [8] [12] [13]
The early proposal would also integrate the new station with some of the historic railway workshop sheds of the adjacent Mainline Steam depot [14] but nothing eventuated. The Mainline Steam Heritage Trust had its lease on the depot terminated by KiwiRail and completed its move from the site in June 2015. [15] The sheds were demolished in September 2015.[ citation needed ]
The heritage station building from the Newmarket station (a historic building designed by George Troup [16] and built in 1908 that was removed during a 2008–10 upgrade) was relocated onto the Parnell station platform in 2016-17. [17] As of early 2019, the station building is used to house artist studios and a gallery. [18]
In late 2015, Auckland Transport advised that opening the Parnell station to passenger services was being postponed until the completion of a road bridge at Cowie Street, replacing the nearby level crossing on Sarawia Street. [4] [19] AT received approval from independent planning commissioners in June 2016. The following November, the commissioners' recommendation for the bridge was appealed. If AT had been unable to address the concerns expressed in the appeal, an Environment Court hearing (most likely in early 2017) would have decided whether the appeal would be upheld. [20]
Trains began operating at the station on 12 March 2017, [21] with an official opening by Mayor of Auckland, Phil Goff, and Waitematā Local Board chair Pippa Coom on 13 March 2017. [22]
In July–August 2018, the Cowie Street bridge to Laxon Terrace was completed and opened and the Sarawia Street level crossing was closed to road traffic. [23] As a result, a new timetable introduced on 26 August 2018 allowed Parnell to become a stop on all Southern Line and Western Line services. [23]
The station is located next to the Auckland Domain, where the Auckland War Memorial Museum is situated 1.2 kilometres away. [24] The two side platforms are linked by an underpass. [25] Voice announcements onboard train services warn passengers with mobility needs to avoid using Parnell station due to its steep inclines. [26]
Future work will provide walking links to the Domain and the campuses of the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology. [27] In mid-November 2018, a walkway was established connecting the Parnell Station to the University of Auckland's Carlaw Park Student Village and the Carlaw business centre, which is near the University of Auckland's City Campus on Symonds Street. [28]
In late 2022 Auckland Transport announced it had received consent to construct a second pedestrian underpass at the northern end of Parnell Station, to provide step-free access to all platforms and a more direct way to cross the tracks. Completion was expected in late 2023. [29] The underpass opened to pedestrians on 23 January 2024. [30]

Westfield railway station was a station of the Auckland railway network in New Zealand. The station closed to all services on 12 March 2017, following an announcement by Auckland Transport on 17 January 2017, because fewer than 330 passengers used it daily and it required a costly upgrade.
Newmarket railway station is a station in the inner-city suburb of Newmarket in Auckland, New Zealand. It serves the Southern, Onehunga and Western Lines of the Auckland railway network, and is the second-busiest station in Auckland, after Waitematā.
Transdev Auckland, formerly Veolia Transport Auckland, and Connex Auckland was a subsidiary of Transdev Australasia that ran Auckland's urban passenger trains under contract from Auckland Transport on infrastructure owned and managed by KiwiRail. Auckland Transport receives funding to subsidise these services from the NZ Transport Agency, which receives funding from road user taxes and Crown appropriations, and from the Auckland Council through rates.

KiwiRail Holdings Limited is a New Zealand state-owned enterprise (SOE) responsible for rail operations in New Zealand and operates inter-island ferries. Trading as KiwiRail and headquartered at 604 Great South Road, Ellerslie, KiwiRail is the largest rail transport operator in New Zealand. KiwiRail has business units of KiwiRail Freight, Great Journeys New Zealand and Interislander. The company was formed in 2008 when the government renationalised above-rail operations and inter-island ferry operations, then owned by Toll Holdings. In 2021, the government launched the New Zealand Rail Plan, with funding for rail projects to come from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF), and with KiwiRail remaining an SOE but paying Track Access Charges (TACs) to use the network.
Auckland railway electrification occurred in phases as part of investment in a new infrastructure for Auckland's urban railway network. Electrification of the network had been proposed for several decades. Installation started in the late 2000s after funds were approved from a combination of regional and central government budgets.
Grafton railway station is a station serving the inner-city suburb of Grafton in Auckland, New Zealand. It is located on the Western Line of Auckland's passenger rail network and consists of an island platform located in a trench near the intersection of Khyber Pass Road and Park Road. The station opened on 11 April 2010.
Quay Park is a junction on the Auckland railway network in New Zealand. It normally links Waitematā with Newmarket station for the Western and Southern lines which use a common set of tracks between Waitematā and Newmarket. The Strand station has been closed to suburban train services since the opening of Waitematā in 2003 and is now used as the terminus for the Auckland–Wellington Northern Explorer service via the North Island Main Trunk line and for chartered excursions. The junction can be switched in order to use The Strand as a backup for Waitematā if required.
The City Rail Link (CRL) is a rail project currently under construction in Auckland, New Zealand. The project consists of a 3.5 km (2.2 mi) long double-track rail tunnel underneath Auckland's city centre, between Waitematā (Britomart) and Maungawhau railway stations. Two new underground stations will be constructed to serve the city centre: Te Waihorotiu near Aotea Square and Karanga-a-Hape near Karangahape Road. Waitematā will be converted from a terminus station into a through station, and Mount Eden station will be replaced by Maungawhau station, a new station with four platforms to serve as an interchange between the new CRL line and the existing Western Line.
The New Zealand AM class of electric multiple unit (EMU) was constructed for the electrification of Auckland's railway network. The class was introduced in 2014 with the first unit having arrived in September 2013. The units are classified AM, with the driving motor car with pantograph classified AMP, the middle trailer car AMT and the driving motor car without pantograph AMA. The trains are operated by Auckland One Rail for Auckland Transport under the AT Metro brand.
