Railroad Square in downtown Santa Rosa, California is a historic district added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The area is bounded by Third, Davis, Wilson, Sixth Streets, and Santa Rosa Creek. [2]
The Northwestern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1871 and promoted early development of the neighborhood, increasing the population of Santa Rosa from 1,000 to 5,000 within five years.
The neighborhood features primarily brick buildings constructed by stonemasons from Northern Italy, noted for withstanding the 1906 earthquake. Fifteen buildings deemed historically significant were constructed between 1888 and 1923. West of the railroad tracks, the growing Italian-American immigrant community developed the West End neighborhood of primarily single-family homes.
Construction of United States Highway 101 and California State Route 12 separated Railroad Square from the broader downtown. Consequently, the district has retained its historic character to a unique degree of architectural homogeneity. This separation also exacerbated economic hardship in the area from the Great Depression through the urban sprawl of the twentieth century. The construction of the Santa Rosa Plaza mall in the late 1970s saw a further detached Railroad Square develop into a skid row. [3]
The Santa Rosa Downtown station has served Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) commuter rail trains since 2017.
Railroad Square has recently positioned itself as a tourism center of Sonoma County's Redwood Empire and Wine Country, with 325 beds across three hotels in the district: the Hotel La Rose, built in 1907 and separately designated on the National Register of Historic Places; the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel & Spa; and the Courtyard Marriott. The free Railroad Square Music Festival has been held every June since 2015. [5]

Armory Square is a small neighborhood on the west side of Downtown Syracuse, New York. It began life as a busy commercial and industrial area just to the west of the central city. After World War II, Syracuse's central city became less and less populated as more housing and business facilities were built in the suburbs. In the 1980s, plans were first made to transform the languishing district into a small shopping/arts/nightlife district surrounding the former Syracuse Armory. These plans came to fruition during the 1990s, when new stores and restaurants opened, and several new buildings were constructed in a compatible style to the middle and late 1800s and early 1900s architecture dominating the district.

Denver Union Station is the main railway station and central transportation hub in Denver, Colorado. It is located at 17th and Wynkoop Streets in the present-day LoDo district and includes the historic station house, a modern open-air train shed, a 22-gate underground bus station, and light rail station. A station was first opened on the site on June 1, 1881, but burned down in 1894. The current structure was erected in two stages, with an enlarged central portion completed in 1914.
Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a rail line and bicycle-pedestrian pathway project in Sonoma and Marin counties of the U.S. state of California. When completed, the entire system will serve a 70-mile (110 km) corridor between Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County and Larkspur Landing in Marin County. In 2022, the system had a ridership of 474,500, or about 2,700 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2023.
The Northwestern Pacific Railroad is a 271-mile (436 km) mainline railroad from the ferry connections in Sausalito north to Eureka with a connection to the national railroad system at Schellville. The railroad has gone through a history of different ownership and operators but has maintained a generic name of reference as The Northwestern Pacific Railroad, despite no longer being officially named that. Currently, only a 62-mile (100 km) stretch of mainline from Larkspur to the Sonoma County Airport in Windsor and east to Schellville on the “south end” is operated by Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART), which operates both commuter and freight trains with plans for future extension north to Cloverdale. The “north end” from Willits to Eureka is currently out of service, but saved by 2018 legislation to be converted into the Great Redwood Trail.

Santa Rosa Downtown station is a Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit train station in Santa Rosa. It opened to SMART preview service on July 1, 2017; full commuter service commenced on August 25, 2017. It is located west of Wilson Street between 4th and 5th Streets, across the U.S. Route 101 freeway from downtown at the site of the ex-Northwestern Pacific Railroad station building. The station is the focal point of the Railroad Square Historic District, a National Register of Historic Places historic district designated in 1979.
Cloverdale station is a bus station and future intermodal station in Cloverdale, California. It is served by Amtrak Thruway and Sonoma County Transit buses. Additional service to Sonoma County Airport station is provided by Sonoma County Transit under contract by Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit.
The Hotel La Rose, at 5th and Wilson Sts. in Santa Rosa, California, was built in 1907, as a replacement for a predecessor building destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
