The S7 is a railway service of the St. Gallen S-Bahn that provides half-hourly service between Romanshorn and Rorschach, with hourly service from Romanshorn to Weinfelden. Some trains continue from Rorschach to St. Margrethen, Bregenz (Vorarlberg, Austria) and Lindau (Bavaria, Germany) along the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee). The line is also part of the Bodensee S-Bahn. [4]

Thurbo, a joint venture of Swiss Federal Railways and the canton of Thurgau, operates the service.

Operations

The S7 operates half-hourly over the Lake line between Romanshorn and Rorschach. It is the only service on that section of the line. Every other train operates over the Winterthur–Romanshorn line between Romanshorn and Weinfelden, stopping only at Amriswil. The S10 makes local stops over the line. As of December 2024, three trains operate on weekdays between Romanshorn and Lindau-Insel (Germany) via Bregenz (Austria); on weekends, this rises to one train every two hours. [5] In Austria and Germany, the S7 operates as a Regionalexpress (REX7). [6]

History

With the December 2021 timetable change, the Romanshorn–Rorschach trains were extended every two hours, on Saturdays and Sundays only, around the southern coast of Lake Constance to Bregenz and Lindau. [8] Beginning on 10 December 2023, three Romanshorn–Lindau trains operated on weekdays. [9] [10] With the 2024 timetable change, the route was extended to Lindau-Insel. [11]

The Vorarlberg Railway denotes a railway line running in north-south direction through the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and extending to Lindau (Germany). Its route is similar to the Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn, from Lindau to the border and to Bludenz, where it connects to the Arlberg Railway and Bludenz–Schruns railway (Montafonerbahn) lines. The entire route in Austria is owned and is operated up to Lindau-Insel by the Austrian Federal Railways. Lindau-Reutin station is a junction station in the town of Lindau, where the Aeschach curve branches off from the Vorarlberg Railway (Lindau-Bregenz–Bludenz). It is also a border station with Austria. In the course of the reconstruction of the Lindau rail hub, which began in 2016, the rail facilities, which were last used only as a goods station, were expanded into Lindau's new long-distance train station, which went into operation in 2020. In contrast to the terminus station Lindau-Insel, which opened in 1854, the station in the most populous district Reutin is a through station on the mainland. A station for local passenger services opened at Lindau-Reutin as Lindau-Lokalbahnhof in 1876 and was known as Lindau-Ost from 1911 but the last passenger services to it ended in 1980.
