The CC 21000 was a class of electric locomotives in service with the French railways SNCF, built by Alsthom in 1969 and 1974. It was a dual voltage version of the CC 6500 class working off both 1500 V DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC. Initially allocated to Dijon, the first two, CC 21001 and CC21002, were fitted with cab signalling to allow them to operate test trains on the new high speed lines. [1]
In 1977, Amtrak borrowed SNCF CC21003 for testing purposes. This engine was rebuilt by Alstom with its transformer and electrical components replaced with those compatible with Amtrak's 25 Hz traction power system, taller pantographs, Amtrak's cab signaling system, US style couplers, a bell, and other components required by the AAR for operation on US railroads. The X996 was equipped with a Nathan P01235 air horn, the same horn used on the more well known E60s This engine and a Swedish SJ Rc4 were imported and tested by Amtrak to determine the best design to replace the aging PRR GG1's operating on their Northeast Corridor. They were numbered by Amtrak as X996 and X995 respectively. However, the X996's suspension system proved unsuitable for the relatively rough US track construction, and despite modifications made over the course of testing, the engine's performance was deemed unsatisfactory for Amtrak's use. Thus, Amtrak favored the Rc4 design, which would serve as the basis for their EMD AEM-7. After testing was completed, X996 was returned to France, reverted to its pre-Amtrak appearance and specifications, and continued to operate on the SNCF. [2]
The CC 21000's were rebuilt into class CC 6500 in 1995 and 1996, taking the numbers CC 6575–CC 6578. All were withdrawn by 2005. CC 21003 was turned into 6577 and was withdrawn and scrapped in 2005. [3] CC 6575 (Formerly 21001) is preserved on static display at the SNCF Nimes Depot in Nîmes, Languedoc-Roussillon, France, approximately 45.6km Northeast from Montpellier, France.
The EMD AEM-7 is a twin-cab four-axle 7,000 hp (5.2 MW) B-B electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and ASEA between 1978 and 1988. The locomotive is a derivative of the Swedish SJ Rc4 designed for passenger service in the United States. The primary customer was Amtrak, which bought 54 for use on the Northeast Corridor and Keystone Corridor. Two commuter operators, MARC and SEPTA, also purchased locomotives, for a total of 65.
The Bombardier–Alstom HHP-8 is a twin-cab electric locomotive built for Amtrak and MARC by a consortium of Bombardier and Alstom. Its electrical system was based on Alstom's BB 36000 locomotive.
The SNCF BB 16500s were a class of SNCF electric locomotives operating at a supply voltage of 25 kV single-phase 50 Hz AC.
The SNCF Class BB 9300 was a class of French 1500V DC electric locomotives built by Schneider-Jeumont/CEM between 1967 and 1969. They were later mainly used on passenger services around Marseille, Avignon, Nîmes, Narbonne and Toulouse, and all had been withdrawn by 2014.
The SNCF BB 20011 and SNCF BB 20012 were electric locomotives used for testing, built by Alsthom between 1985 and 1986. The two locomotives were the synchronous dual-voltage prototypes for Class BB 26000.
The SNCF Class BB 9200 1500 V DC electric locomotives were built by Schneider-Jeumont/CEM between 1958-1964. 92 of them were built, the last being withdrawn in 2014.

The SNCF class BB 15000 is a class of 25 kV 50 Hz electric locomotives built by Alstom and MTE between 1971 and 1978. Initially 65 locomotives strong, the class was widely deployed on the whole French 25 kV network before being replaced by TGV trains when the LGV Est went into service in 2007.
The SNCF Class CC 6500 is a class of 1.5 kV DC electric locomotives. The CC 6500 was, together with the CC 40100 and diesel CC 72000, the first generation of the 'Nez Cassé' family of locomotives and designed for hauling express trains with speeds up to 200 km/h (124 mph) but also used for heavy freight trains. Among the trains they hauled in their first years of service were the SNCF flagship train Le Mistral and Trans Europ Express trains Aquitaine, Le Capitole and l'Étendard.
Pulse code cab signaling is a form of cab signaling technology developed in the United States by the Union Switch and Signal corporation for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1920s. The 4-aspect system widely adopted by the PRR and its successor railroads has become the dominant railroad cab signaling system in North America with versions of the technology also being adopted in Europe and rapid transit systems. In its home territory on former PRR successor Conrail owned lines and on railroads operating under the NORAC Rulebook it is known simply as Cab Signaling System or CSS.
The SNCF Class CC 72000 was a class of C′C′ diesel-electric locomotives designed and built by French manufacturing conglomerate Alsthom. They are regarded as being the most powerful class of diesel locomotives to be built in France.
The BB 63000 is a diesel-powered centre cab freight shunting locomotive used by French rail operator SNCF. First introduced in 1953, various batches, with increasingly more powerful engines, were built up till 1964. Along with its successors, classes BB 63400 and BB 63500, together totalling over 800 locomotives, it could be found all over France.

The BB 13000 class were electric locomotives operated by SNCF in France. They were one of four classes, together with the BB 12000, CC 14000 and CC 14100 classes, that formed an experimental group for studying the practicality of the new French 25 kV 50 Hz AC electrification.
The Nez Cassé series of locomotives is a large family of electric and diesel locomotives intended primarily for fast passenger service on the French SNCF railway system. Produced by Alsthom for use under multiple electrification networks and un-electrified lines, they have been in widespread use from 1976 into the 21st century. Classes produced in the main series were BB 7200/7600 and CC 6500 under 1.5 kV DC, BB15000 under 25 kV 50 Hz AC, BB 22200 (7200+15000) and CC 21000 under dual 1.5 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz AC, and the diesel CC 72000/72100.
The SNCF Class CC 14100 was a class of 25 kV 50 Hz AC electric centre cab locomotives designed to haul heavy freight trains in the northeast of France and cross-border traffic into Luxembourg. A total of 101 locomotives were produced, numbered CC 14101 – CC 14202.
The SNCF Class BB 66600 is a small class of centre cab diesel locomotives rebuilt from the earlier Class BB 66000 by fitting a slightly more powerful engine. The locomotives were 14.898 m (48.88 ft) long and weighed 71 t. Powered by an SEMT 12PA4 diesel engine developing 1,100 kW (1,500 hp), they had a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). All members of the class were fitted for multiple working and all but two had electric train heating.
The SNCF Class BB 325 was a class of 25 electric locomotives built between 1946 and 1948. The class was a development of the pre-war Midi Class E4700 and very similar to the Class BB 300. As delivered they were numbered 0325–0355. Under the 1950 renumbering scheme they became BB 325–BB 355.
The SNCF Class CC 1100 was a class of 12 centre cab electric shunting locomotives, the first two of which were originally ordered for the PO-Midi. Originally numbered E 1001–E 1012, under the 1950 SNCF renumbering they became CC 1101–CC 1112. They were built by Batignolles-Châtillon and Oerlikon, the first two, E 1001 and E 1002, in 1937 and the remaining ten, E 1003–E 1012, between 1943 and 1948. Completely rebuilt between 1989 and 1995, the last was withdrawn from service in 2005.
