Sadar North Baptist Association (SNBA) is a Baptist Christian denomination in Tripura. It is located within the West Tripura district of Tripura in India.

History

SNBA started as a small circle within the Central Baptist Association of Tripura Baptist Christian Union (TBCU). It later on evolved and developed into a full-fledged association of TBCU with many churches affiliated to it. Today there are around more than 150 churches and fellowships within Sadar North Baptist Association. Some the pioneers of the Baptist's in Sadar North is Life Deacon Biralal Debbarma (one of the first three Christians in the Kokborok speaking community and the ex-President of SNBA) and the Late Rev. Rabindra Debbarma.

Before its birth as a full association the SNBA was one of the four Pastoral Circles under the Central Baptist Association. As churches grew rapidly with more new believers everywhere in the state, the Annual Assembly Session of Tripura Baptist Christian Union which was held in Subhash Nagar (North Tripura) on 23–26 February 1989 passed resolution that the Circles (e.g., South, Udaipur, Saisawm Sazai, and Sadar North) be given the full status of Associations. And it was how the Sadar North Baptist Association was established as an Association in the month of February 1989.

The leaders of the newly born Association with the kind presence of Rev. Hnehliana, the then General Secretary of TBCU, met prayerfully on 25 March 1989 at Durga Chowdhury Baptist Church and formed the first Executive Committee of the Association on ad hoc basis. The first members selected for the executive committee were:

  1. President: Mr. Birolal Debbarma
  2. Secretary: Rev. Rabindra Debbarma
  3. Treasurer: Mr. Chandra Kanta Debbarma.

Faith and doctrine

SNBA is based on the principles of Baptist theology and doctrines and is strongly threaded and bounded by firm faith on Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit and the one and only omnipotent Father God.

SNBA has the highest strength of Kokborok speaking Baptist community in Tripura.

Office

The association is led by the Executive Secretary, Rev. Ranjit Debbarma, and has its head-office in Baptist Mission Compound, Arundhutinagar, Agartala.

The association is registered under the Tripura Baptist Christian Union (TBCU). The association is located within the West Tripura district of Tripura state in India.

The foundation for a new hospital under the association was laid on 30 September 2013 for which the construction is underway.

Some churches like Zion Baptist Church, Kisong Baptist Church, Jangalia Baptist Church, Abhicharan Baptist Church, Bhuban Chontai Baptist Church, and Khumulwng Baptist Church, have huge strength of members whereas others like churches like Roktia Baptist Church, and Rasu Baptist Church, have less strength of members.

Kokborok (Tiprakok/Tripuri) is the native language of Tripuri people in present Tripura state in Northeast of India. During the 20th century many of Royal family and its officials contributes to develop the Kokborok language in many ways.

Rasu Kami is a small Tripuri village situated on the foot-hills of Boromura hill range in Sadar sub-division of West Tripura, India. It lies 3 km west of Champaknagar from the Assam-Agartala highway and 4 km north of Jirania. The people speak a local language of Kokborok. The population of the village is 60 persons.

Uatlok Twithu also known as Borokathal, is a small town located in the interior of Sadar sub-division of West Tripura district of Tripura, India. The Sumli river flows through the town. The locality consist of the ethnic Tripuri people. The town has the only high secondary school of the area.

Kisong is a village in the central Sadar sub-division of West Tripura, a district of Tripura, India. It is about 5 kilometers away from the NEEPCO Power Station in Khayerpur. It is well connected with the Abhicharan village and the Durga Chowdhury village. The local church, Kisong Baptist Church, has been very active since its establishment and is also one of the oldest churches amongst the Kokborok speaking people of Tripura.

Abhicharan is a village in Sadar sub-division of West Tripura district of Tripura, India. The people here belong to the Tripuri tribe and they speak Kokborok. The government figure for the population is 2822. The village has amenities like telephones, schools, rice-mill, markets and also it is connected with the nearby town of Khayerpur via Kisong. It is also connected to Agartala through Kamalghat junction. A Tripura State Rifles outpost is located in this village, which looks after the security problems of this village, as this village is very strategic in location. It is situated right in the heart of Sadar sub-division. From here the villages of the interiors can be accessed very well through village unmetalled roads.

The Diocese of Agartala is a Catholic diocese comprising the entire State of Tripura in the ecclesiastical province of Shillong in India. The cathedral is St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Agartala.

Christianity is one of the religions in Tripura, a state in North East India. According to the Indian Census 2011, the population of Christians in Tripura is 159,882 or 4.35% of the total population. Christians are mostly found among the indigenous communities of the state such as the Tripuri, Lushai, Kuki, Darlong, Halam etc. Among the Scheduled Tribes of the state Christians share is 13.12% of the population.

Khwichang Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in Kutna Kami village area of Tripura. It has a strength of about 300 baptized communicant members. Pastor Biswa Kumar Debbarma is the local pastor. It is located just beside the road near the Kutna Bari Junior Basic School.

KOK Baptist Association (KOKBA) is a Kokborok speaking Baptist community in Tripura. It is located within the Khowai district of Tripura in India. It has around 3,800 communicant members in 60 churches.

Atul Debbarma is an Indian doctor-turned-politician and author. He was a practicing doctor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi until December 2017. He became involved with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its different wings such as Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram and Vivekananda International Foundation in 2007. He won the Tripura Assembly Elections 2018 as the BJP candidate from Krishnapur constituency.

Sudhanwa Debbarma was an Indian Kokborok writer, Political leader and member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the former Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly. He was the veteran leader of Ganamukti Parishad. He was a member of Tripura Legislative Assembly from Takarjala (1977-1988).

The Tripura Presbyterian Church Synod is one of the constituent units of the Presbyterian Church of India. It has its headquarters in Agartala, Tripura. It has 325 churches and 22,277 members mostly among the indigenous peoples of Tripura.
