In the National Basketball Association (NBA), foreign players—also known as international players—are those who were born outside of the United States. Players who were born in U.S. overseas territories, such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, are considered international players even if they are U.S. citizens. [457] [458] [459] [460] In some borderline cases, the NBA takes into consideration whether a player desires to be identified as international. [457] The first foreign-born player in franchise history is Bobby Croft. Croft, who was the first Canadian player to earn a scholarship to a major U.S. basketball college, [461] played one season for the Texas Chaparrals in the ABA.
In the 1997 draft, the Spurs drafted Tim Duncan who was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although Duncan is a United States citizen, [462] the NBA considers him an international player. [463] In the 1999 and 2001 draft, the Spurs drafted Manu Ginóbili from Argentina and Tony Parker from France respectively. These three international players, Duncan, Ginóbili and Parker, played together from 2002 until Duncan's retirement in 2016, became All-Stars and led the Spurs to four NBA titles. Aside from the "Big Three" of Duncan, Ginóbili and Parker, the number of international players in the Spurs roster also grew in the 2000s. [464] [465] On the opening day of the 2013–14 season, the Spurs set the record for the most international players on a team roster with ten international players from seven countries. [466]
The following is a list of international players who have played for the Spurs, listed by their national team affiliation.

A four-time NBA champion, Ginóbili was a member of the San Antonio Spurs for his entire 16-year NBA career. Along with Spurs teammates Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, he was known as one of the "Big Three" during the Spurs' era of success. The 1977 NBA draft was the 31st annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on June 10, 1977, before the 1977–78 season. In this draft, 22 NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players. The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each conference, with the order determined by a coin flip. The Milwaukee Bucks won the coin flip and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Kansas City Kings, who obtained the New York Nets first-round pick in a trade, were awarded the second pick. The remaining first-round picks and the subsequent rounds were assigned to teams in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. A player who had finished his four-year college eligibility was eligible for selection. If a player left college early, he would not be eligible for selection until his college class graduated. Before the draft, six college underclassmen were declared eligible for selection under the "hardship" rule. These players had applied and gave evidence of financial hardship to the league, which granted them the right to start earning their living by starting their professional careers earlier. Four former American Basketball Association (ABA) franchises who joined the NBA when both leagues merged, the Denver Nuggets, the Indiana Pacers, the New York Nets and the San Antonio Spurs, took part in the NBA Draft for the first time. Prior to the start of the season, the Nets relocated to New Jersey and became the New Jersey Nets. The draft consisted of 8 rounds comprising the selection of 170 players.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) opposed to the owners' plan, and wanted raises for players who earned the league's minimum salary. After both sides failed to reach an agreement, the owners called for a lockout, which began on July 1, 1998, putting a hold on all team trades, free agent signings and training camp workouts, and cancelling many NBA regular season and preseason games. At midseason, the team traded Cedric Ceballos to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for three-point specialist Dennis Scott, as they posted a ten-game winning streak between March and April, winning eleven of their final twelve games of the season.
