Soledad Atzompa

Soledad Atzompa ( 18°45′N97°09′W / 18.750°N 97.150°W / 18.750; -97.150 ) is a village in the mountainous central zone in the Mexican state of Veracruz, about 90 km south-east of the state capital Xalapa. It has an area of 65.80 km2 and stands at an elevation of 2260 metres above sea level.

Name

Its name, Atzompa, comes from the nahuatl language and refers to the small river valleys on the mountain looking like a scalp [1] In time it took the other part of its name from the Soledad river which runs through the town. This river is a tributary of the River Blanco.

Geography

The municipality of Soledad Atzompa is delimited to the north by Huiloapan de Cuauhtémoc, to the east by Atlahuilco, to the southeast by Xoxocotla, and to the west and northwest by Acultzingo. [2] There had been a number of border disputes in the past settled by a decree in 1982. [1]

The climate of Soledad Atzompa is temperate-humid, with an average temperature of 12 °C; annual average rainfall is 887 mm. [1]

Agriculture

The local soil is composed of sandy rock and only 50% can be used for agriculture. The area produces principally maize.

Celebrations

In February there are celebrations in honor of "Virgen de la Candelaria", patron of the town, and in December there are celebrations in honor to Virgin of Guadalupe. [1]

Santa María Atzompa is a town and municipality located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, about five km from the state capital of Oaxaca. It is part of the Centro District in the Valles Centrales region. The town was founded between the 7th and 9th centuries as a satellite of the ancient Zapotec city of Monte Albán. Since its founding, pottery making has been a major economic activity and the town is currently known for its green-glazed pottery. This pottery used to be shipped all over Mexico and exported to the United States but today most of this pottery is sold locally. Beginning in 2009, there has been excavation at the Atzompa archeological site, leading to the discovery of a 45-meter Mesoamerican ball court, which has been determined to have been on the principal one for Monte Alban. Today, the town is rustic with the smoke of wood-fired pottery kilns ever present. Poverty has been a concern for the town, but innovations such as the use of lead-free glazing and a communal crafts market have been implemented to improve the craft's prospects.
