History

To the east of Annapolis, on the north shore of the Severn River, west of Whitehall Creek at Whitehall Bay and south of US Route 50 lies the St. Margaret's area, including the communities between Ridout, Burley, Minnow and Mill Creeks as well as along St. Margarets Road, Maryland Route 179.

Located on the west bank of Whitehall Creek are the present communities of Tanglewood, Whitehall Beach and Amberley previously part of a tract called Pleasant Plains. Much of these waterfront areas look onto the colonial plantation of Whitehall, located on the east bank of Whitehall Creek.

On the west of these communities is Beechwood on the Burley, Hidden Point and Milvale. The communities between Whitehall Creek and Mill Creek are all accessible from Pleasant Plains Road, a historic and scenic road [1] that joins Route 179 at the location of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.

To the southeast of Mill Creek are the communities of Brown's Woods Mulberry Hills, and Round View. Brown's Woods and Mulberry Hills are known as a historically-black settlements. [2] Located at the end of Forest Beach Road on Mill Creek is Cantler's Riverside Inn, the most popular restaurant in Maryland. [3]

Providence, between Mill Creek and the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course, was first settled in 1649 by the Puritans. The lands were later abandoned for the settlement of Annapolis due to its sheltered anchorage and deep water. The current area of Providence was acquired by Shepard and Vanous Builders in late 1962. The land was subdivided into 78 lots along with the clubhouse, swimming pool and marina. [4]

On both sides of Ritchie Highway near the Maryland World War II Memorial is Pendennis Mount. [5] Lands in St. Margaret's area stretch towards the Naval Academy, North Severn Complex with military family housing, golf course, marina and boat repair areas.

Maryland Route 179 State highway in Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Maryland Route 179 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as St. Margarets Road, the highway runs 3.16 miles (5.09 km) from MD 648 near Annapolis east to the end of state maintenance in Cape St. Claire. MD 179 serves a suburban area near the southern end of the Broadneck Peninsula of northeastern Anne Arundel County. The state highway was paved in the 1920s from its western end to Skidmore near Sandy Point. MD 179 was truncated at what is now U.S. Route 50 /US 301 when their predecessor highway replaced the stretch to Skidmore in the early 1940s. MD 179 was extended into Cape St. Claire in the early 1990s.

Jonas Green Park

Jonas Green Park is a public recreation area on the Severn River owned and operated by Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The park sits at the east end of the Naval Academy Bridge on Maryland Route 450 just outside the city of Annapolis. The former state park bears the name of Jonas Green, Maryland’s public printer during the colonial period. It was turned over to the county in 2009. The park offers a visitors center, cartop boat launch site, and fishing pier. It is the southern terminus of the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail.

The Broadneck Peninsula is an area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The area is north of the Severn River, south of the Magothy River and west of the Chesapeake Bay. At the lower end of the Broadneck Peninsula is the 4.3 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Burle's Town Land is a colonial archaeological site near Annapolis in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was the location of the homestead of Robert Burle, a surveyor who received a 100-acre (40 ha) patent in the area in 1663, including land that he may have been occupying somewhat earlier. Burle built a house and lived there until is death in 1675; his only child, a daughter, married and moved away in 1680, abandoning the property. The property is situated on a terrace above Mill Creek, and is now partly covered by a later cemetery. Archaeological digs have uncovered general outlines of Burle's house, although the evidence is somewhat compromised by grave digging activity above. The site has also yielded significant finds of Dutch ceramics. Burle's residence in the area is associated with the Puritan Providence Colony established across the Severn River where Annapolis is now located.

Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL) is a public library system located in central Maryland. Established in 1921 as the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Public Library, Inc, the system now includes 16 locations throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
