A single instance of a web series program can be called an episode or a "webisode"; however, the term is not always used. In general, web series can be watched on a range of platforms and devices, including desktop, laptop, tablets and smartphones. They are different from streaming television, which is purposed to be watched on various streaming platforms, though the term "web series" is sometimes used to refer to streaming television series. Because of the nature of the Internet itself, a web series may be interactive. Web series are classified as new media.

The web series The Guild and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog were the biggest winners of the night, winning four and six awards, respectively, out of the 25 award categories. The show was met by positive reception by celebrities in attendance and the media.

The show was viewed as more professional than previous years and was praised for its musical performances, but it also received a more mixed reception on its increased focus on mainstream shows and celebrities.
The 4th Annual Streamy Awards was the fourth installment of the Streamy Awards honoring streaming television series. The awards were held on September 7, 2014 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. They were hosted by the YouTube stars Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart. To reflect the industry as it had evolved since 2009, 10 new award categories were added, including multiple awards honoring the short-form video hosting website Vine, a new category to honor traditional TV media engaging in online content, and categories reflecting recent YouTube trends. The show also featured "spotlight segments" in which content creators highlighted important social and cultural issues such as racial justice, COVID adaptability, and mental health.

Hosted by popular creator MatPat, it was the first time the ceremony was held in summer, moved from its previous winter date. A new award called Rolling Stone Sound of the Year Award launched, celebrating songs popular on social media.
