Thalassery railway station (station code: TLY [5] ) is an NSG–3 category Indian railway station in Palakkad railway division of Southern Railway zone. [6] It is a railway station serving the City of Thalassery in Kerala. It lies in the Shoranur–Mangalore section of the Southern Railways. It is the third largest station in Kerala in terms of number of passengers under Palakkad division. [7] The station has two platforms and three tracks. Though no trains originate from this station, trains halting at the station connect the city to prominent cities in India such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Coimbatore, Quilon, New Delhi, Mangalore, Pune, Jaipur, Jammu Tawi, Okha and so forth. The old platform ticket counter is closed after the renovation of Thalassery railway station. The new ticket counter is located at Platform No. 02. The road which connects Thalassery railway station is known as Goodshed Road which is now often referred as new railway station road.[ citation needed ] Thalassery railway station once had goods transportation facility. which is now discontinued and moved to Edakkad railway station.

No direct line connects Thalassery to Mysore, although a feasibility study for such a route was funded in 2013.

TLY railway station is a Class 'A' railway station. Almost all major trains connecting the other parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and North India halt here.

Thalassery (Station Code: TLY) and Jagannath Temple Gate (Station Code: JGE) are two different stations which serve Tellicherry city.

Infrastructure

Thalassery railway station has two platforms, namely Platform No.1 and 2 with two entrances. There are two ticket counters. The railway station has lift as well as escalator facilities to cross platform. The station is also equipped with free wireless internet access facility, and prepaid auto stand.

Location

Thalassery Railway station is located just 700 m from Thalassery New Bus Stand in Narangapuram.

Kannur International Airport is just 24 km from the railway station which will be the airport station.

The Marusagar Express is a weekly express train that runs between Ajmer and Ernakulam, connecting Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka to Kerala. The train runs through four zones of Indian Railways, travelling 2860 km in around 48 hours. There are 32 halts along the way. Mangalore–Chennai Mail is a Superfast Mail daily train operated by the Indian Railways between the cities of Chennai (Madras) and Mangaluru via Salem, Podanur, Palakkad, Shoranur, Tirur, Parapanangadi, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. It is one of the oldest train still being operated by Indian Railways. Earlier it ran from Madras Royapuram to Kozhikode (Calicut). When the line extended up to Mangalore, it ran up to Mangalore Central from Royapuram Chennai. When Madras Central came into existence its terminal was changed to Madras Central Chennai Central from Royapuram and it ran as Madras Central Chennai Central - Mangalore Central Malabar Express. Till 1887 it ran as Malabar Express, after that its name was changed to Chennai/Mangalore Mail. It was one of the prestigious train in Indian Railways. It runs always full by having more stoppages in northern Kerala beginning from Palakkad Junction to Kasaragod. It also has nine stoppages at Tamilnadu and it does not have any other stoppages in Karnataka except Mangalore Central

Udupi railway station is a railway station in Udupi district, Karnataka. Its code is UD. It serves the pilgrims visiting famous Krishna Matha at Udupi and the university town of Manipal, which is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) south from the station and Udupi. The station consists of two platforms. Most of the platform is not sheltered from the heavy rains that Udupi receives. The Konkan railway route in which trains are pulled by Diesel locomotives will now be powered by Electric locomotives after electrification of this route. Konkan railway conducted a trial run of Electric locomotives on 13 January 2020, Monday from Thokur railway station to Udupi railway station. The electric locomotive started from Thokur at 4 p.m. and reached Udupi at 6 p.m. On return journey the electric locomotive reached Thokur at 8 p.m.

Trains from here connect the city to prominent state capitals of India like Bangalore (Karnataka), Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai and so forth. It is also well connected to the major railway stations such as Goa (Madgoan), Udupi, Mangalore, Kasaragod and Ernakulam. Rail connectivity in Byndoor was established in 1997. A total of 34 express and passenger trains halt here; there was one originating and terminating trains at this station: Mookambika Road–Kannur Passenger train; however this service was terminated in 2017 within two years of service due to lack of revenue generation. Although the railway station caters to a lot of passengers and superfast trains on a daily basis, it does not have a siding line or passing loop. Any crossing of trains can only happen either on Bijoor or Shiroor railway stations 19 km apart.

Diesel Loco Shed, Ernakulam (Code:ERSX) is a motive power depot performing locomotive maintenance and repair facility for diesel locomotives of the Indian Railways, located at Ernakulam Junction (ERS) of the Southern Railway zone in the city of Kochi, Kerala. It is one of the four diesel loco sheds of the Southern Railway, the others being at Tondiarpet (TNP) at Chennai, Erode (ED) and Golden Rock (GOC) at Trichy and the only locomotive shed in Kerala and the southernmost loco shed in India. Although it is in Kerala, its locomotives were mainly used in Goa and Maharashtra, and very rarely near the shed for passenger trains.
