The Amazing Race Canada 9 is the ninth season of The Amazing Race Canada , a Canadian reality competition show based on the American series The Amazing Race . Hosted by Jon Montgomery, it featured ten teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race across Canada. The grand prize included a CA$250,000 cash payout, a trip for two around the world, and two Chevrolet Colorado ZR2s. [1] This season visited six provinces and travelled over 12,000 kilometres (7,500 mi) during ten legs. Starting in Winnipeg, racers travelled through Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia before finishing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A new twist introduced in this season was the Assist, which allowed teams to only perform part of select tasks. The season premiered on CTV on July 4, 2023 and concluded on September 19, 2023. Dating couple Ty Smith and Kat Kastner were the winners of this season, while dating couple Tyler Turner and Kayleen Vanderee finished in second place, and friends Ben Chutta and Anwar Ahmed finished in third place.

Production

Development and filming

On November 28, 2022, CTV announced the renewal of the show for a ninth season. [4] [5] Filming for the season was listed as occurring during Spring 2023. [6] Following the 11th Canadian Screen Awards on April 12, 2023, producer Mark Lysakowski announced that filming would begin during the next week. [7]

Filming began in late April in Winnipeg. [8] [9] On April 24, 2023, the second leg was filmed in Smithers, British Columbia. [10] Racers were in Greater Victoria on April 29. [11] On May 5, the show was spotted in Niagara-on-the-Lake. [12] [13] The show was in Toronto on May 12 with Jon Montgomery and the production crew opening the Toronto Stock Exchange. [14] Later in the day, racers were spotted at Kensington Market. [15] On May 14, 2023, the final leg was filmed in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia. [16]

This season introduced a new twist called the Assist. Given to each team at the start of the season, teams could use the Assist in select challenges through the sixth leg and only have to perform part of the challenge.

Casting

Casting for the ninth season opened on November 28, 2022. [5] Casting was initially set to close on January 6, 2023, but was extended to January 8, 2023. [17] [18]

Marketing

Chevrolet, Desjardins Group, Expedia, Disney Studios (promoting Haunted Mansion ), and GURU Organic Energy returned as sponsors. New sponsors included Samsung, Staples Canada, and the Canadian Armed Forces. [1] [19]

The cast includes Impact wrestlers Gail Kim and Gisele Shaw, Canada's Drag Race contestants Jermaine Aranha and Justin Baird, actor Joel Oulette, Paralympic snowboarder Tyler Turner, and Ty Smith, a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash. The cast was revealed on June 21, 2023. [3] [20]

Though filming started in February 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused production to be placed on hold for over a year and a half. The race resumed in September 2021 with most of the original teams and a modified route. This season visited two continents and seven countries and traveled over 22,000 miles (35,000 km) during eleven legs. Starting from several cities in the United States, racers traveled through England and Scotland before production was suspended. After reuniting in St. Gallen, racers traveled through Switzerland, France, Greece, and Portugal before finishing in Greater Los Angeles. An element of the show that returned for this season was having teams start from their homes instead of a centralized location. The season premiered on CBS on January 5, 2022, and the season finale aired on March 2, 2022.

The Amazing Race Canada 8 is the eighth season of The Amazing Race Canada, a Canadian reality competition show based on the American series The Amazing Race. Hosted by Jon Montgomery, it featured ten teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race across Canada. The grand prize included a CA$250,000 cash payout, a trip for two around the world, and two Chevrolet Silverado ZR2s. This season visited five provinces and travelled over 20,000 kilometres (12,000 mi) during eleven legs. Starting in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, racers travelled through Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and New Brunswick before finishing in Vancouver. New twists introduced in this season include the On Ramp, which was a task that gave teams the chance to reenter The Amazing Race Canada; the Pass, which forced a team to stop racing until another team passed them; a double elimination leg; and four teams racing in the final leg. The season was originally scheduled to premiere on CTV in July 2020; however, after the COVID-19 pandemic forced production to postpone the season for two years due to travel restrictions between selected Canadian provinces, it premiered on July 5, 2022 with a preseason special etalk Presents: The Amazing Race Canada airing on July 1. The season finale aired on September 20, 2022.

The Amazing Race 35 is the thirty-fifth season of the American reality competition show The Amazing Race. Hosted by Phil Keoghan, it featured thirteen teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, competing in a race around the world to win US$1,000,000. This season visited three continents and nine countries and traveled over 23,800 miles (38,300 km) during twelve legs. Starting in Los Angeles, racers traveled through Thailand, Vietnam, India, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Sweden, and Ireland before finishing in Greater Seattle. Elements of the show that returned for this season include the use of commercial flights, the Express Pass, and the U-Turn. In addition, the U-Turn Vote returned with a private vote rather than a public vote, and the U-Turn was a Blind U-Turn. Unlike past seasons, the 35th season featured 90-minute-long episodes. The season aired on Wednesday nights on CBS beginning on September 27, 2023 and concluding on December 13, 2023.
