Overview
Established in 2005, the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Japan (titled as, the most beautiful villages in Japan) is an important player in the enhancement and conservation of Japanese rural heritage.
In line with the other members, such as France, Italy, Belgium, of the federation of the Most Beautiful Villages on Earth, Japan has common interests: authenticity, quality and presentation of the heritage as a source of sustainable development and life. Activities of the association include managing the rights of the use of the title name "the most beautiful villages in Japan" and its branding, providing common research and study platform to the member towns and villages for development and cooperation, conducting rural crafts show and food fairs for tourism development, annual photo contests and advocating social awareness about the supreme importance of the rural cultural and natural heritage for its conservation for the future generations.
Nagano Prefecture is a landlocked prefecture of Japan located in the Chūbu region of Honshū. Nagano Prefecture has a population of 2,007,682 and has a geographic area of 13,561.56 square kilometres (5,236.15 sq mi). Nagano Prefecture borders Niigata Prefecture to the north, Gunma Prefecture to the northeast, Saitama Prefecture to the east, Yamanashi Prefecture to the southeast, Shizuoka Prefecture and Aichi Prefecture to the south, and Gifu Prefecture and Toyama Prefecture to the west.
Nagiso is a town located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 April 2019, the town had an estimated population of 4,111 in 1751 households, and a population density of 19 persons per km2. The total area of the town was 215.93 square kilometres (83.37 sq mi). Nagiso is listed as one of The Most Beautiful Villages in Japan.
Ōkuwa is a village located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 April 2019, the village had an estimated population of 3,693 in 1558 households, and a population density of 16 persons per km2. The total area of the village is 234.47 square kilometres (90.53 sq mi).

The Class D51 (D51形) is a type of 2-8-2 steam locomotive built by the Japanese Government Railways (JGR), the Japanese National Railways (JNR), and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Rolling Stock Company, Kisha Seizo, Hitachi, Nippon Sharyo, Mitsubishi, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from 1936 to 1945 and 1950 to 1951. 174 units are in preservation in Japan, including five operational examples. A further 13 are preserved in Russia and Taiwan, bringing the total number of preserved units to 187.
The 69 Stations of the Nakasendō are the rest areas along the Nakasendō, which ran from Nihonbashi in Edo to Sanjō Ōhashi in Kyoto. The route stretched approximately 534 km (332 mi) and was an alternate trade route to the Tōkaidō.

The National Governors' Association (NGA) is a national alliance of prefectural governors established under Article 263-3 of the Local Autonomy Law. It mainly makes requests and policy recommendations to the national government regarding local administration and finance. Its abbreviation is NGA. It has organized the Local Autonomy Establishment Measures Council together with the National Association of Prefectural Assembly Speakers, the National Association of City Mayors, the National Association of City Council Speakers, the National Association of Town and Village Speakers, and the National Association of Town and Village Council Speakers.
