The soundtrack to the 2012 coming-of-age drama film The Perks of Being a Wallflower written, directed and based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Stephen Chbosky, features a selection of pop, rock and jazz compilations by various artists, handpicked by Chbosky and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas. [1] The album was marketed and released by Atlantic Records on September 11, 2012, [2] [3] in digital platforms, CD and vinyl. [4] [5] Michael Brook composed the film's incidental underscore, published by Lakeshore Records on September 25, that featured nine tracks. [6]
Other songs not included in soundtrack included "Here" (Pavement), "Don't Dream It's Over" (Crowded House) and "Pretend We're Dead" (L7). [7]

But they are all great in their own way. And since these songs have meant a lot to me, I just wanted you to have them as a soundtrack for whatever you need them to be for your life."

Chbosky said music was one of the important factors of the film, while already adding that he did not use songs from his teenage life, but also modern songs, and called it as "the biggest delight in making the film". [9] In his discussion with Pastavas, Chboksy had said that "the soundtrack is basically our mix tape back and forth. She brought in a lot of songs, I brought in a lot of songs, and then Jennifer Nash our music editor, she contributed, and it all came together. Yeah, I love that music and to their credit". [10] Summit Entertainment also paid them for licensing those songs into the film, following the audience response to the songs. [11] [12] Chbosky further added that "A lot of the music made it into the movie, but there are some surprises from the era that we included too". [9]
A number of songs, were featured in the book as well, including The Smiths’ "Asleep" and songs from The Rocky Horror Picture Show . [13] He was initially nervous on using those tracks, as "it is so important to the movie and the book, and the Smiths could have asked for the moon and we probably would have given it to them but they didn’t. When they realized how important it was, they gave us the song for well, I can’t say how much but they just got into the spirit of it and people seemed enthusiastic about being a part of this." [11] The track "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" from The Stars, for the tunnel sequence, while for the first kiss between Charlie and Sam, he used the song "Samson" by Regina Spektor. He added that "the longing of these songs reminded me of the longing of that time". [14] [15]
In his book, "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac is listened to by the kids when they go through the tunnel. However, in the film, Chbosky used the David Bowie single "'Heroes'". Chbosky said "Landslide" is a "very soft ballad", and he felt that "the problem was when we got to the tunnel scene I just thought, 'We need something that’s not soft. We need something that’s driving, that’s epic in nature', and "Heroes" was a perfect fit." [14] [16] In one sequence, when Sam and Charlie attend the dance, the former hears Dexys Midnight Runners' single "Come On Eileen" and says, "They’re playing good music". Chosbky called it "one of the greatest dance songs" and said, "If you really think about it, if you play that at a wedding or anything, you’ll get people dancing at the most bogus events, that’s what she means. I love that song and it’s [one of] my favorite songs from the '80s." [11] The single "It's Time" from Imagine Dragons was featured in the trailer but was not included in the soundtrack. [14] [17]
The music received critical acclaim. [18] [19] Calling it "a soundtrack that added to its authenticity and emotional impact", Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote, "With mixtape-like intimacy, the album echoes the connections between the film's characters, but that heartfelt vibe reaches listeners as well." [20] Claire White, in her analysis for Junkee Media, said, "No film quite understands the power of music during your teen years quite like ThePerks of Being a Wallflower". [21] Writing for The New Zealand Herald , Kim Gillespie gave a 4/5 rating to the soundtrack and said, "This album does what a good soundtrack should do, and takes you there". [22] Afterglow's Myah Taylor said "the music in 'Perks' is handpicked just for the wallflower. Its songs put words and images to his spectrum of emotions, helping move the story along in a way that people can understand and relate to." [23] Dan Jolin of Empire called the soundtrack "inherently superior". [24]
Daily Collegian 's review of the film, written by Rachel Arlin, stated, "The soundtrack complements the film very well. There are a few indie songs, but the majority of them are about teenage rebellion." [25] Kevin Jagernauth of IndieWire wrote that "the music, with a carefully curated soundtrack by Alexandra Patsavas, ... hits the necessary emotional cues while never overselling them". [26] The Linc wrote, "The soundtrack to the film is also a bonus for avid music fans, including songs from The Smiths, David Bowie and Sonic Youth that suited the film being based in the ’90s." [27] In a contrasting review, Rex Reed of Observer wrote, "The soundtrack is so drenched in bubblegum pop that it sounds like an iTunes library". [28] Ty Burr of Boston.com wrote, "The soundtrack’s impeccable playlist of ’80s indie-rock classics seems more the choice of a writer in his early 40s than teenagers in the 1990s". [29]
Several publications such as MTV , [30] Den of Geek , [31] IndieWire , [32] Film School Rejects , [33] Fact [34] and Entertainment Weekly , [35] called ThePerks of Being a Wallflower one of the "best soundtracks 2012". /Film , [36] Insider Inc. , [37] IndieWire [38] and Screen Rant [39] included it among their "best soundtracks of the decade". Harper's Bazaar and Thrillist listed it as one of their "best movie soundtracks of all time". [40] [41] Ray Rahman, editorial assistant to Entertainment Weekly, said "It’s Time" was one of "his most played songs of 2012" after the song was featured in the film's trailer. [42]

Stephen Chbosky is an American film director, screenwriter, and author. He is best-known for writing the bestselling coming-of-age novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999), as well as for writing and directing the 2012 film adaptation of the book. Most recently, he directed the 2017 drama Wonder and the 2021 film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. His first psychological horror novel, Imaginary Friend, was published in October 2019.

"Bust a Move" is a song by British-American rapper Young MC from his 1989 debut album, Stone Cold Rhymin'. The song is built on a sample of "Found a Child" by the group Ballin' Jack. The drums, produced by a LinnDrum, are sampled from the song "Radio-Activity" by RoyalCash. The breakdown segment contains a combination of beats sampled from the songs "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey and the Detroit Guitar Band, and "Daytime Hustler" by Bette Midler. "Bust a Move" also featured guest vocals by Crystal Blake and bass guitar by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who both appear in the music video.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is a 2013 urban fantasy film based on the first book of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, directed by Harald Zwart, with a script written by Jessica Postigo. The film stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Zegers, Lena Headey, Kevin Durand, Aidan Turner, Jemima West, Godfrey Gao, C. C. H. Pounder, Jared Harris, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The musical score was composed by Icelandic composer Atli Örvarsson. The film featured two soundtracks: an original soundtrack and an original score. Both the albums were released on August 20, 2013, a day before the film's release. The original soundtrack, released by Republic Records, featured songs performed by Ariana Grande, Zedd, Demi Lovato, Colbie Caillat, AFI, Nathan Sykes amongst several others. Two original songs were also recorded for the film. The score album, published by Milan Records, featured the musical cues from Örvarsson's score.
"Pearly-Dewdrops' Drops" is a single by Scottish band Cocteau Twins, taken from their 1984 EP The Spangle Maker. The song was written by Cocteau Twins, and recorded at Rooster Studios in London. It was their highest-charting single, peaking at No. 29 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 1 on the UK Indie Chart.
The Irishman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2019 film The Irishman directed by Martin Scorsese. The film score is written and composed by Scorsese's frequent collaborator Robbie Robertson, who also compiled the soundtrack with music supervisor Randall Poster. It features both original and existing music tracks. Sony Music Entertainment released the soundtrack digitally on November 1, 2019 and through physical formats on November 29. Inside Out: Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack album to Disney/Pixar's 2015 film of the same name, composed by Michael Giacchino. It is the second collaboration between Michael Giacchino and Pete Docter, after previously working on Up, which received an Academy Award for Best Original Score. Giacchino termed the score as "more emotional in comparison to the score for Up" and also being "more personal" due to his experience on parenthood. The score was recorded between January and May 2015, and featured more orchestral and symphonic music accompanied by a range of instruments, from piano, guitar, drum, organ and harp.

The score album featured six tracks, including five themes from the soundtrack composed by Alexandre Desplat and one theme by Mark Mothersbaugh, who scored for Anderson's early films. Irrespective of being released along with the soundtrack in May 2012, the score album was separately released, in order to be shortlisted for nominations at award ceremonies, including Academy Awards, which was rejected due to the inspiration of classical music from Benjamin Britten's compositions.

If I Stay (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2014 film of the same name released by WaterTower Music on August 19, 2014. The album features a compilation of songs from The Orwells, Tanlines, Lucius, Odessa, Ane Brun, Linnea Olsson, Sonic Youth, Beck, Tom Odell, Ben Howard. The fictional band Willamette Stone also contributed to the album, which were played by Vancouver-based alternative rock band Hawking, and produced by indie rock producer Adam Lasus. The songs performed by the band were written specifically for the film.
Babylon (Music from the Motion Picture) is the score album to the 2022 film of the same name directed by Damien Chazelle. The original music composed by Justin Hurwitz, Chazelle's frequent collaborator, which is set for release on December 9, 2022 by Interscope Records, two weeks ahead of the film's release on December 23, features 48 tracks running over an hour. Two of the tracks "Call Me Manny" and "Voodoo Mama" were released on November 11.
