"Truth or Dare" is a song by South African singer Tyla from her 2024 self-titled debut studio album. It was released by FAX and Epic Records as a promotional single from her 2023 self-titled extended play, before impacting rhythmic contemporary radio in the United States on 13 February 2024, as the second single from the album. Written by Tyla, Ariowa Irosogie, Imani Lewis, Corey Marlon Lindsay-Keay, Jamal Europe, and its producer Sammy SoSo, "Truth or Dare" is an amapiano track infused with elements of afrobeats and contemporary R&B influences.
The accompanying music video premiered on YouTube on 2 February 2024. Commercially, "Truth or Dare" peaked at number one in five countries. It reached number four on the U.S. Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, number eleven in New Zealand, and number fifteen in Japan and Tyla's native South Africa. "Truth or Dare" received gold certifications in Brazil and Canada. It was performed live in multiple countries.
On 25 November 2023, Tyla teased "Truth or Dare" on Twitter with a video captioned "Truth or Dare. Pre-save, December 1". [1] Written by Tyla, Ari PenSmith, Imani Lewis, Corey Marlon Lindsay-Keay, Jamal Europe and its producer Sammy SoSo, "Truth or Dare" was recorded at Miloco Studios in London, England. [2] It was one of the three promotional singles taken from Tyla's self-titled digital extended play (EP), released on 1 December 2023 by FAX Records and Epic Records. [3] [4] [5]
Tyla announced the release date of her debut self-titled studio album on 1 December 2023 via Instagram. [6] To promote the recording, Tyla released a visualizer via YouTube on 15 December 2023, that was filmed in Portland, Jamaica. [7] [8] Originally scheduled for release on 1 March 2024, the album was then released later that month on 22 March, [9] containing the digital EP. [10] "Truth or Dare" was sent to the rhythmic contemporary radio stations as the second single from the album on 13 February 2024, and it was labeled the most added track of that week with 42 stations. [11] "Truth or Dare" was covered by South Korean singer, Somin of Kard. [12]
"Truth or Dare" is three minutes and ten seconds long. [10] The fourth song on the album, it is an amapiano recording, [13] [14] which has been described as a slab of afrobeats by Resident Advisor 's Joshua Minsoo Kim. [15] It is an R&B-influenced recording, [16] [8] characterized by guitar riffs, Tyla's "candied" vocals, as well as rhythmic and bass-heavy percussion. [17] In the chorus, Tyla sings about remembering when her then-lover would mistreat her and she challenges him to catch up. [18]
"Truth or Dare" debuted at number one in Korea, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and the Levant. [19] In the United States, the song peaked at number four on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles on the chart dated 6 April 2024. [20] "Truth or Dare" also peaked at number one on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart. [21] number three on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, [22] number four on the World Digital Song Sales chart, [23] number 17 on the Rhythmic chart, [24] and number 41 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. [25] Elsewhere, it peaked at number 11 in New Zealand and number 15 in Japan and Tyla's native South Africa. [26] [27] [28] "Truth or Dare" was certified Gold in Brazil by Pro-Música Brasil, [29] and in Canada by Music Canada. [30] With over 51 million streams globally on Spotify in April 2024, "Truth or Dare" was the second most streamed song by Tyla, trailing behind "Water" until it was surpassed by "Jump" when it amassed over 100 million streams in June 2024. The music video for "Truth or Dare" was directed by Nabil Elderkin, [33] who later worked with Tyla on the videos for "Water (Remix)", [34] "Art", [35] "Jump", [36] and "Breathe Me". [37] It was shot in the Caribbean in December 2023. [7] The music video was released via YouTube on 2 February 2024. [38] As of October 2024, the music video sits on over 28 million views. [39] Tallie Spencer of HotNewHipHop praised Tyla's ability to mix storytelling and visuals. [40]
In the video, Tyla receives a text in the kitchen and links up with her problematic ex-lover; [33] she drives off on an awful journey with him. [38] Approaching the end of the video, Tyla is seen sticking her head out the windows of a moving car, [38] getting her revenge as she speeds away from her then-lover. [33] She gets into a high-speed chasing with an ex who won't let go and the police chase after them. [9] When the ex-lover eventually catches up to Tyla, she steals his keys and walks off, leaving him to deal with the police. [9]
Tyla performed a medley of "Water" and "Truth or Dare" on the season 24 finale of the U.S. television series The Voice aired on NBC on 18 December. [41] [42] She also performed a medley of "On and On", "Truth or Dare", and "Water" in Times Square during the 2024 television special Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve . [43] [44] Tyla performed most of the tracks from the record including "Truth or Dare", [45] "Breathe Me" and "Water", and cover songs at the 2024 edition of Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka, Japan on 17 August 2024, [46] [47] and again the following day in Tokyo, she delivered a 45-minutes long performance where she opened with "Safer", then went on to perform "Truth or Dare", before closing with "Water". Gqom, gqom tech, sgubhu, 3-step or G.Q.O.M) is an African electronic dance music genre and subgenre of house music, that emerged in the early 2010s from Durban, South Africa, pioneered and innovated by music producers Naked Boyz, Rudeboyz, Sbucardo, Griffit Vigo, Nasty Boyz, DJ Lag, Menzi Shabane, Distruction Boyz and Citizen Boy.
Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper. He gained initial recognition with his 2019 song "Dumebi". That same year, he signed with D'Prince's record label, Jonzing World. He achieved international recognition with his 2022 single "Calm Down", which spawned a remix with American singer Selena Gomez that peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also led Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-setting 58 weeks.
Afrobeats, not to be confused with Afrobeat or Afroswing, is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Nigeria and Ghana. Genres such as hiplife, jùjú music, highlife, azonto music, and naija beats, among others, were amalgamated under the "Afrobeats" umbrella.
Amapiano is a subgenre of kwaito and house music that emerged in South Africa in the mid-2010s. It is a hybrid of deep house, gqom, jazz, soul and lounge music characterized by synths and wide, percussive basslines. The word "amapiano" derives from the IsiZulu word for "pianos".
"Essence" is a song by Nigerian singer Wizkid, featuring fellow Nigerian singer Tems. It was released on 30 October 2020, as the fourth single from Wizkid's fourth studio album, Made in Lagos. "Essence" was produced by P2J and Legendury Beatz. The "sensual" song sees the duo express their desire for each other. A music video was released on 9 April 2021, shot in Accra, Ghana. "Essence" is the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. "Water" is a song by South African singer Tyla from her debut studio album, Tyla (2024). It was released on 28 July 2023 by Fax and Epic Records as the album's lead single. An amapiano song with elements of pop, R&B and Afrobeats, it sees Tyla expressing a desire for a passionate, intimate tryst. Remix versions of the song by American rapper Travis Scott and record producer Marshmello were released on 17 November 2023.

The song was written by Tyla, Mocha, Believve, Gunna, Skillibeng, and its producer Sammy SoSo. Musically, "Jump" is a genre fusion of Afrobeats, dancehall and hip hop. It features throbbing bass, amapiano percussion, and a chant of the Zulu language expression "haibo". Tyla reflects on her rise to fame with braggadocio in the lyrics and references Johannesburg, the city where she was born and raised, by its two colloquial names, Joburg and Jozi.

"Tears" is a song recorded by South African singer Tyla. It was released on 20 November 2024 by FAX and Epic Records. "Tears" was written by Tyla, Theron Thomas, Michael Pollack, Livvi Franc and its producers Mikkel S. Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen of Stargate. The acoustic folk ballad focuses on Tyla connecting with her inner empath and was recorded in 2024 in collaboration with Coca Cola's Coke Studio. A video for the Coke Studio Session of the song premiered the same day. The song was referred to by Jon Pareles of The New York Times as a departure from her signature amapiano-R&B sound.
