Urban Chaos: Riot Response is a first-person shooter video game developed by British games developer Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game was released in May 2006 in Europe and June 2006 in North America. It is Rocksteady Studios' debut game and, as of 2024, the only game by the developer to not be based on a DC Comics property as well as their only title to not receive a PC release.

The player controls Nick Mason, a member of the newly formed "T-Zero" riot control squad, in an unnamed modern American city that has been overtaken by a gang known as the Burners, who are armed with cleavers, molotov bombs and firearms used to attack civilians, paramedics, firefighters and police officers. The player can defeat the gang members with various firearms to protect the city, capture gang leaders and rescue injured civilians throughout the game. The Xbox version of the game features online multiplayer.

Development and release

Urban Chaos: Riot Response was known by three different names during development. [2] The game was announced by SCi Entertainment in September 2004 as Roll Call, a first-person shooter set in a run-down city in the near future, with Argonaut Games as the developer; it was planned for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox with a release in late 2005. [3] [4] After Argonaut underwent liquidation the following month, development shifted to Rocksteady Studios, a studio formed by ex-Argonaut employees with SCi backing, with the release pushed back to 2006; [5] [6] Argonaut founder Jez San would later claim in a 2022 interview that SCi intentionally misled its leadership about supporting the company during restructuring in order to poach its employees. [7] The game was showcased at E3 2005 by SCi, whose acquisition of Eidos Interactive was finalized at the same time. [8] [9] In October 2005, Eidos announced the project had become Zero Tolerance: City Under Fire, a first-person shooter following a member of an elite anti-gang unit who must defend a city under siege; a release on PC was also revealed. [2] Technopop's former president and owner of its assets, Randel B. Reiss, made a statement in which he held the copyright for the title Zero Tolerance , and also announced that he was working on an updated version of the 1994 Zero Tolerance under the same title which was being developed for the PlayStation Portable; the statement alleged trademark infringement on Reiss' trademark and sent a "cease and desist" notice to Eidos Interactive in using the title Zero Tolerance. [10] Eidos later renamed their game Urban Chaos: Riot Response. [11]

The game was developed using the Havok physics engine for in-game physics effects. [1] ReplicaNet was used to supply the software in the game's online and LAN multiplayer modes. [12] Perforce Software's Source Control Management (SCM) System was used to manage the game's source code, documents, and digital asset development. [13]

The game was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in Europe on May 19, 2006, [14] Australia on May 26, 2006, [15] North America on June 13, 2006, [16] and in Japan by publisher Spike on June 28, 2007. [17]

Reception

Urban Chaos: Riot Response received "average" reviews on both platforms, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. [18] [19] In Japan, where the PlayStation 2 version was ported for release as Urban Chaos [lower-alpha 1] and published by Spike on June 28, 2007,[ citation needed ] Famitsu gave it a score of three 8s and one 7 for a total score of 31 out of 40. Steel Battalion is a video game created by Capcom for the Xbox console where the player controls a "Vertical Tank"—a bipedal, heavily armed mecha. To control the tank and play the game requires the use of a large controller made specially for Steel Battalion. Hitman: Blood Money is a 2006 stealth video game developed by IO Interactive and published by Eidos Interactive. It was released in May 2006 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox and Xbox 360. It is the fourth installment in the Hitman video game series, and the sequel to 2004's Hitman: Contracts. The story follows cloned assassin Agent 47's efforts to bring down the Franchise, a rival contract killing organization that is threatening his employers, the International Contract Agency (ICA), and seeking to obtain the same cloning technology that created 47. Meanwhile, a frame story presents 47's life and various contracts he carried out, as narrated by a former FBI director to a journalist.

<i>Zero Tolerance</i> (video game) 1994 video game

Zero Tolerance is a 1994 video game developed by Technopop and published by Accolade exclusively for the Mega Drive/Genesis. It was one of the very few first-person shooters for the console, along with Bloodshot, Duke Nukem 3D and Corporation.

Eidos Interactive Limited was a British video game publisher based in Wimbledon, London. Among its notable franchises were Championship Manager, Deus Ex, Hitman, Thief, and Tomb Raider. Domark was founded by Mark Strachan and Dominic Wheatley in 1984. In 1995, it was acquired by software company Eidos. Ian Livingstone, who held a stake in Domark, became executive chairman of Eidos and held various roles including creative director. Eidos took over U.S. Gold in 1996, which included developer Core Design, and merged its operations including Domark, which created publishing subsidiary Eidos Interactive. The company acquired Crystal Dynamics in 1998, and owned numerous other assets. In 2005, parent Eidos was taken over by games publisher SCi. The combined company, SCi Entertainment Group, which was briefly renamed Eidos, was itself taken over by Square Enix in 2009.

SCi Entertainment Group plc was a British video game publisher based in London. The company was founded in 1988 by Jane Cavanagh and floated on the stock exchange in 1996. In December 2008, SCi was briefly renamed Eidos and was subsequently acquired by Square Enix in March 2009.

<i>Commandos 2: Men of Courage</i> 2001 video game

Commandos 2: Men of Courage is a real-time tactics video game, developed by Pyro Studios, published by Eidos Interactive, and released on September 20, 2001. It is a sequel to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and the second installment of the Commandos series, and is the only strategy game of the series to be designed not only for Microsoft Windows, but also for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game sees players taking control of a squad of commandos, along with various allied units, as they sneak behind enemy lines to accomplish various missions in World War II, between 1941 and 1944, that will help them to thwart the war efforts of the Germans and the Japanese. The game features several improvements to the gameplay from its predecessor, including the ability to use enemy weapons and explore interior locations, the inclusion of three new commandos, a number of new skills for the original six members along with their other abilities, and new pieces of equipment to help overcome the enemy.

<i>Kung Fu Chaos</i> 2003 video game

Kung Fu Chaos is a 3D fighting party game developed by Just Add Monsters and published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox in 2003. Described as a "multiplayer brawler", the game is a comedic beat 'em up title with a stylistic presentation inspired by kung fu films. Kung Fu Chaos was the first title developed by Ninja Theory, a Cambridge studio formed by former staff of Millennium Interactive to pursue an independent project. Initial development was self-funded, with a prototype developed by a team of four to eight to pitch to publishers. The final version of the game was financed under an acquisition of the studio by Argonaut Games and a publishing deal with Microsoft Game Studios.

Just Cause is a 2006 third-person action-adventure game set in an open world environment. It is developed by Swedish developer Avalanche Studios and published by Eidos Interactive, and is the first game in the Just Cause series. It was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. The area explored during the game is described as being over 1,024 km2 (395 sq mi) in size, with 21 story missions and over 300 side missions to complete. As of 23 April 2009, it has sold more than one million copies.

Sneak King is a stealth video game by Burger King for the Xbox and Xbox 360 video game consoles, released in 2006. Burger King sold the game with the purchase of value meals. Players take control of Burger King's mascot The King, in a stealth food-delivery themed game that spans four levels based on Burger King's commercial advertisements. Sneak King is one of three titles released by Burger King under the name King Games and developed by Blitz Games as part of five week promotional campaign between November 19 and December 24, 2006. Rocksteady Studios Limited is a British video game developer based in London. Founded on 13 December 2004, the studio is best known for its work in the Batman: Arkham series. The company is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games.

<i>Batman: Arkham Asylum</i> 2009 video game

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a 2009 action-adventure game developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman and written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini, Arkham Asylum was inspired by the long-running comic book mythos. In the game's main storyline, Batman battles his archenemy, the Joker, who instigates an elaborate plot to seize control of Arkham Asylum, trap Batman inside with many of his incarcerated foes, and threaten Gotham City with hidden bombs.

<i>SWAT: Global Strike Team</i> 2003 video game

SWAT: Global Strike Team is a 2003 tactical shooter video game developed by Argonaut Games and published by Vivendi Universal Games for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It featured a new game engine developed by Argonaut developed to push the lighting capabilities of the Xbox and was the first SWAT game to ship on console systems. The game was inspired by the strategic elements of SWAT 3 with the instantly accessible arcade action of the Virtua Cop series.
