The Volvo 7000, later Volvo 7700, was an integrally-constructed fully low-floor single-decker rigid bus and single-decker articulated bus built by Volvo between 1999 and 2012. It was generally available as 12-metre and 18-metre on both diesel and CNG, and from 2010 as a 12-metre hybrid electric. A trolleybus version has also been built.
The model was developed in Finland under the name Carrus K206, but when presented in late 1998 together with the Säffle-built Volvo 5000 it became known as the Volvo 7000. [1] In addition to the 12.0 metre being built on B7L, it was also available as the 18.0 metre articulated Volvo 7000A built on B7LA. CNG versions were built on B10L/B10LA. Standard 12- and 18-metre versions were manufactured at the plant in Wrocław, Poland. In Vantaa, Finland (Carrus Oy Wiima) the 12-metre version was built, in addition to some customized lengths. Turku received some short 11-metre ones, while Helsinki received some longer ones at 12.89 metres. Production in Vantaa ceased when the plant was closed down in 2001. By this time only 43 7000s had been delivered to customers in Finland, in addition to a handful of demonstrators for various countries.
During 2003 the model was renamed to Volvo 7700 and Volvo 7700A, to better fit with the other model names introduced since 2001, like the 8700 and the 9700. No other changes than the name is known to have been done to the model that year.
In 2006 it was upgraded with the B9L and B9LA chassis, and at the same time got a facelift. The front was changed with a "grille" and new headlights, and the rear end got a "lump" at the top and new taillights. The rest of the exterior was more or less unchanged.
In 2008 the first prototypes for a hybrid electric bus named Volvo 7700 Hybrid were built on the B5LH chassis. Serial production started in 2010.
Volvo's Hungarian subsidiary Alfa Busz Kft in Székesfehérvár manufactured a batch of 102 Alfa Cívis 12 in 2009, which were made to look similar to the 7700. There were two prototypes and then 100 buses for public operator DKV in Debrecen. In addition a batch of 40 Volvo 7700A were delivered to DKV the same year, being specially adapted, they were rebranded as Alfa Cívis 18 . [2]
The Volvo 7700's successor, the Volvo 7900, was introduced in 2011, and the last 7700s were built in 2012.
In 1999, a batch of seven (#221-227) 7000A were delivered to Linz Linien. [3] In 2000 they received a further two (#185-186) 7700 and in 2000-2001 19 (#201-219) 7000A that were built as trolleybuses, [4] known as the Volvo 7000AT. In 2001–2002, Blaguss in Wien received 12 (#9051-9062) standard 7000s. [5]
Several cities received small batches of buses, while Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe received a total of 51 (#1355-1405) 7700s in 2002. Alpina Rhein-Main in Frankfurt received a batch of 36 (#901-936) B9L 7700s in 2006. In 2008, Autobus Sippel in Hofheim received 28 (#201-228) 7700s and 20 (#229-248) 7700As.
In 2003, Volvo signed a contract to deliver 150 7700As to BKV in Budapest, being the first ever non-Hungarian manufacturer to deliver such an order to Budapest. [6] All 150 buses were delivered between 2004 and 2006. BKV have later bought both 7700 and 7700A second hand, and operated a few leased Alfa Cívis 12s. More 7700As have been delivered to other Hungarian operators from 2007.
Between 2004 and 2006, Vilniaus autobusai received 60 7700s and 30 7700As. This was Volvos first order for new citybuses in Lithuania. [7] 2006 made Volvo 7700s are also used in Kaunas. [8]
BBA in North Brabant, later Veolia Transport Nederland, received in 2004 a batch of 35 (#250-256, #3801-3828) 7700s, and a further 114 (#3829-3942) 7700s and 48 (#5811-5858) 7700As of the new B9L/B9LA type in 2006–2007.
As the model was being produced in Poland, several cities in Poland received batches of 7000s and 7000As, with city of manufacturing, Wrocław, receiving 100 (#8046-8145) 7000A/7700A and 37 (#7000-7036) 7000/7700 between 2001 and 2006.
Between 2000 and 2002, TPG in Geneva received a total of 84 (#301-384) 7000A, with additional 6 (#385-390) 7700A in 2004. Bernmobil in Bern received a batch of 32 (#801-832) 7700A on B9LA CNG in 2006–2007, followed by 15 (#121-132, #141-143) 7700 on B9L CNG in 2007–2009.
Despite its Nordic origin, the 7000/7700 was never really popular in the Nordic countries, except for a few Wiima-built ones that were delivered to Helsinki and Turku when the model was fairly new. This is mostly because full low-floor buses have not been much popular there compared to the low-entry ones. It was first when the hybrid arrived that the 7700 became a popular model in the region.
In early 2001, one Vantaa-built 7000 came to Norway as a demonstrator, and was the only 7000/7700 in the country until the B9L-facelift in 2006. It was never really sold to any customer, and was only rented out for shorter periods to different operators. BorgBuss received as first Norwegian customer two (#96166-96167) B9L CNG 7700s for Fredrikstad in 2006, with two more (#96177-96178) in 2009. Sporveisbussene (now Unibuss) in Oslo received in 2007 a batch of 11 (#513-523) 7700s. Veolia Transport (now Boreal Transport) in Stavanger received the same year a batch of 15 (#1057-1071) 7700As, followed by 35 (#1139-1173) CNG 7700s in 2008. Then in 2010 a massive amount of 7700s and 7700As reached the country. Tide Buss received 63 (#8264-8273, #8286-8338) 7700s and 12 (#8274-8285) 7700As for Bergen, and 16 (#5130-5145) CNG 7700s for Haugesund. Nettbuss received 22 (#48320-48339, #48392-48393) 7700s for Grenland, 10 (#47489-47498) 7700 Hybrids for Trondheim (Team Trafikk) and two (#10008-10009) 7700 Hybrids for Arendal. Unibuss received two (#608-609) 7700 Hybrids and five (#1018-1022) 7700As for Oslo. In 2011, Nettbuss received one (#17085) 7700 Hybrid for Sarpsborg, while Unibuss received one (#1210) 7700 Hybrid and 22 (#1250-1271) CNG 7700s for Oslo. Early in 2012, Nobina Norge received 32 (#1152-1183) 7700 Hybrids for Tromsø, and Nettbuss received 13 (#22301-22313) 7700 Hybrids for Hamar in the summer. Also in January 2012, two of the 2008 prototypes went into a one-year test run for Boreal Transport in Finnmark, with at least one of them serving as citybus in Alta. The last of this model to be delivered to a customer in Norway was a custom made 18.75-metre 7700A that had been built in 2011/2012 in a bid for a tender in Oslo where the buses by requirement had to be at least 18.74 metres long. Volvo did not win the bid, and if they had, the serial production would most likely have been built as 7900A. In late 2013 this bus entered service for Avinor as an airside bus at Trondheim Airport, Værnes.
In 2012, Mexico City Metrobús line 4 was inaugurated with 54 12-metre Volvo 7700 buses. Most of these were of the standard B9L type, but there were also a few 7700 Hybrids. It is not known if these buses were shipped from Poland or if they were assembled on the continent.
Volvo Buses, stylized as VOLVO, is a subsidiary and a business area of the Swedish vehicle maker Volvo, which became an independent division in 1968. It is based in Gothenburg.
An articulated bus, also referred to as a slinky bus, bendy bus, tandem bus, vestibule bus, stretch bus, or an accordion bus, is an articulated vehicle, typically a motor bus or trolleybus, used in public transportation. It is usually a single-decker, and comprises two or more rigid sections linked by a pivoting joint (articulation) enclosed by protective bellows inside and outside and a cover plate on the floor. This allows a longer legal length than rigid-bodied buses, and hence a higher passenger capacity (94–120), while still allowing the bus to maneuver adequately.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro500 is a three-axle double-decker bus built by Alexander Dennis in the United Kingdom. It was unveiled in 2002 and is one of the Enviro-series bus models made by TransBus/Alexander Dennis. The bus was sold on diesel or hybrid-electric powertrains and on Volvo chassis as a bodywork.
The Volvo B9TL is a low-floor double-decker bus built by Volvo from 2002 until 2018. It superseded the Volvo Super Olympian and the Volvo B7TL. The 2-axle version has been superseded by the Volvo B5TL in 2014 and the 3-axle version has been superseded by the Volvo B8L in 2018.
The Mercedes-Benz Citaro is a single-decker, rigid or articulated bus manufactured by Mercedes-Benz/EvoBus. Introduced in 1997, the Citaro is available in a range of configurations, and is in widespread use throughout Europe and parts of Asia, with more than 55,000 produced by December 2019.
The Volvo B7L is a fully low floor single-decker bus, double-decker bus and articulated bus chassis with a rear engine mounted vertically on the left of the rear overhang. It was built as a replacement for the Volvo B10L, and the Volvo Olympian, used as both a single-decker bus and a double-decker bus chassis largely in Continental Europe. The Volvo B7L was superseded by the Volvo B9L in 2006.
A hybrid electric bus is a bus that combines a conventional internal combustion engine propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. These type of buses normally use a diesel–electric powertrain and are also known as hybrid diesel–electric buses.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 is a twin-axle low-floor double-decker bus that was built by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis between 2005 and 2018. It replaced the Alexander ALX400. In 2014, the Enviro400 was succeeded by the updated Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC and production of the classic Enviro400 ceased in 2018.
The Wright Eclipse Gemini is a low-floor double-decker bus body that was built by Wrightbus since 2001, based on the single-decker Wright Eclipse design. The second-generation Eclipse Gemini 2 was launched in 2009, followed by the third-generation Gemini 3 in 2013. Additionally, the body was available on Volvo Super Olympian chassis in Hong Kong between 2003 and 2005, marketed as the Wright Explorer.

The Volvo Olympian was a rear-engined 2-axle and 3-axle double decker bus chassis manufactured by Volvo at its Irvine, Scotland factory. The first was built in 1993 and entered production in March 1993, replacing the Leyland Olympian.
The Volvo B10BLE is a rear-engined low-entry single-decker bus chassis manufactured by Volvo in Sweden between 1993 and 2004. The first prototypes were built in 1992, but mass production started in 1993, only a year after the high-floor B10B. It was popular in Australia, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. It had the engine mounted on the rear overhang of the bus. It became the successor of the city bus version of the B10B and was used as a base for single-decker buses worldwide. The B10BLE was available in diesel powered format, and later in a compressed natural gas powered format with the fuel tanks on the roof of the bus. Its low-floor design was widely promoted by Volvo when it was first launched, on the basis of added convenience to the passengers, and the increase in transport efficiency due to the low-floor design.
The MAN Lion's City is a range of low-floor and low-entry public buses built by German truck and bus manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus since 1996 primarily for the European market, but is also available in chassis-only variants worldwide. The name Lion's City has been used since 2006, when MAN's public bus models which had been marketed separately were gathered into one range, when also most models received a facelift. The first models to be introduced were the 12-metre low-floor intercity bus NÜ xx3 (A20) in 1996, the 12-metre city bus NL xx3 (A21) in 1997 and the articulated NG xx3 (A23) in 1998. As with former MAN bus models the power-rating made up part of the model name, giving the NÜ-series buses with power-ratings of 260 and 310 hp model names NÜ 263 and NÜ 313 respectively. The main production sites are in Starachowice and Sady in Poland, but the models have also been built in Germany, Turkey and Malaysia. Initially most of the midibus variants were manufactured by Göppel Bus in Augsburg, later Nobitz.
The Volvo B5LH is a low-floor hybrid electric bus chassis for both single-decker buses and double-decker buses manufactured by Volvo since 2008. It is the basis for Volvo's integral 7700 Hybrid full low floor city bus and its successor, the 7900 Hybrid from 2011. In 2008, pre-production batches of both types of chassis were manufactured. Serial production started in June 2010. From 2013 it is also available as an articulated bus chassis. First entering service in London, the B5LH is the only current double decker type in service in the United Kingdom that uses a parallel hybrid drive system.
The Vilnius bus network operates bus lines in Lithuanian capital city Vilnius. Up to 420 buses are working on working-days, 250 - on weekends.
The Volvo 7900 is an integrally-constructed single-decker rigid bus and single-decker articulated bus, most commonly available as a hybrid electric bus named Volvo 7900 Hybrid or just Volvo 7900H, but is also available with both diesel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines in some markets. It was manufactured at Volvo's plant in Poland until 2023. From now on the bodywork is manufactured on licence by MCV Bus and Coach in Egypt.The MCV assembled 7900 features a slightly updated front, similar to the Volvo 8900 Electric. The Volvo 7900 was introduced at Busworld Kortrijk 2011. Based on the Volvo 7900 Hybrid an extension is offered, which i.a. includes a roof-mounted device for occasional loading at stops. The manufacturer assumes that all buses at all end stations and also at some particularly busy stations stay a few minutes until the return or onward journey. As soon as a bus reaches an appropriately equipped stop, a loading unit attached to a pillar at the roadside lowers onto the coupling point mounted on the roof of the bus. The charging process ends as soon as the bus wants to continue or the battery is full. According to the manufacturer, this equipment allows compared to conventional hybrid buses significantly extending the travel time in electric mode and a reduction in fuel consumption. The vehicle and the charging system were first presented to the public in September 2014 at the International Motor Show.
The Volvo B9RLE is a 9.4-litre engined tri-axle low-entry single-decker bus and double-decker bus chassis manufactured by Volvo between 2010 and 2013. The double-decker was available in either closed top or open top form. It was introduced as an interim replacement for the soon to be discontinued B12BLE in the short gap of years before they had the Euro VI compliant B8RLE ready. At the same time they introduced a tri-axle variant of the B7RLE, but in Volvo's home markets the 290 bhp that the D7E produces is considered insufficient for a 15-metre bus.
The Scania OmniExpress is a series of semi-integral single-deck coaches, intercity buses and city buses built by Scania in from 2007 until 2017. The OmniExpress 3.40 and OmniExpress 3.60, built to respective heights, are available as coach and intercity buses on the K EB and K IB chassis throughout Europe, including Russia, and right-hand drive versions for UK and Ireland. The 3.31-metre high OmniExpress 3.20 is available as an intercity bus, also on both K EB and K IB, in most of Europe, and the OmniExpress 3.20 LE is available as a low-entry city bus on K UB chassis in the Nordic countries.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 MMC is a low-floor double-decker bus produced by the British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis since 2014, replacing the Alexander Dennis Enviro400. The Enviro400 MMC is produced at Alexander Dennis' Falkirk and Scarborough factories in the United Kingdom.
AtB AS is a public transport manager for Trøndelag county and is managed as a corporation. AtB's task is to plan, order, market and develop public transport in the county. Tariffs are set by the county council as part of the budget process. AtB has three main sources of funding: Ticket revenues, grants from the Trøndelag County Municipality and the Environmental Package. AtB has a customer center at Prinsens Gate 41 right beside the bus stop Prinsens Gate P2 in Trondheim. AtB took over as public transport manager for bus traffic in Trondheim in 2010, tram traffic on Gråkallbanen and other bus traffic in Sør-Trøndelag county in 2011, speedboat routes in 2012 and 2014, ferries in 2015, and in 2018, the former Nord-Trøndelag county was also incorporated after the two counties was merged into the new county of Trøndelag.
