Walks Scheme

The Walks Scheme (previously known as the Comhairle na Tuaithe /Rural Walks Scheme) is an initiative by the Irish Department of Rural and Community Development which funds the maintenance of walks and trails through private and public lands. [1] [2] [3] The scheme has been in existence since 2008. [4] [5]

2024 Expansion

Following a call for applications in June 2023, [6] an expanded list of walks in the scheme were announced in February 2024, [7] including the first walks in counties Wexford and Monaghan, and trails on off-shore islands Inis Meáin and Cape Clear Island. [8]

The Cavan Way is a long-distance trail in County Cavan, Ireland. It is 22 kilometres long and begins in Blacklion and ends in Dowra. It is typically completed in one day. It is designated as a National Waymarked Trail by the National Trails Office of the Irish Sports Council and is managed by Cavan County Council. The trail was devised by a local man, Harold Johnston, and set up by the Blacklion Community Council and the Cavan County Development Team between 1984 and 1985.

The Lough Derg Way is a long-distance trail in Ireland. It is 68 kilometres long, beginning in Limerick City and ending in Dromineer, County Tipperary. It is typically completed in three days.

The Beara-Breifne Way is a long-distance walking and cycling trail being developed from the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland, to Blacklion in the area of Breifne in County Cavan. The trail follows closely the line of the historical march of O’Sullivan Beare.

Leitrim is a barony in Ireland that lies partly in County Galway and partly in County Clare. It is located in the south-eastern corner of County Galway and the north-eastern corner of County Clare. Prior to 1898, the entire barony was contained in County Galway. The Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898 split the barony: part of the barony was transferred to County Clare. Leitrim is bounded, clockwise from the southwest, by the Clare baronies of Tulla Upper and Tulla Lower; the Galway baronies of Loughrea to the west, Kilconnell to the north, and Longford to the east; and by Lough Derg to the south and southeast. It measures 20 miles (32 km) from north to south and 9.5 miles (15.3 km) from east to west.
