The 2010 Weymouth and Portland Borough Council election took place on 6 May 2010 to elect members of Weymouth and Portland Borough Council in Dorset, England. One third of the council was up for election and the council stayed under no overall control. [1]

Weymouth and Portland Borough & Non-metropolitan district in England

Weymouth and Portland was a local government district and borough in Dorset, England. It consisted of the resort of Weymouth and the Isle of Portland, and includes the areas of Wyke Regis, Preston, Melcombe Regis, Upwey, Broadwey, Southill, Nottington, Westham, Radipole, Chiswell, Castletown, Fortuneswell, Weston, Southwell and Easton; the latter six being on the Isle of Portland.

Borough status in the United Kingdom is granted by royal charter to local government districts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The status is purely honorary, and does not give any additional powers to the council or inhabitants of the district. In Scotland, similarly chartered communities were known as royal burghs, although the status is no longer granted.

Dorset County of England

Dorset is a county in South West England on the English Channel coast. The ceremonial county comprises the unitary authority areas of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and Dorset. Covering an area of 2,653 square kilometres (1,024 sq mi), Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east. The county town is Dorchester which is in the south. After the reorganisation of local government in 1974 the county's border was extended eastward to incorporate the Hampshire towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch. Around half of the population lives in the South East Dorset conurbation, while the rest of the county is largely rural with a low population density.

Conservative Party (UK) Political party in the United Kingdom

The Conservative Party, officially the Conservative and Unionist Party, is a centre-right political party in the United Kingdom. The governing party since 2010, it is the largest in the House of Commons, with 313 Members of Parliament, and also has 249 members of the House of Lords, 18 members of the European Parliament, 31 Members of the Scottish Parliament, 12 members of the Welsh Assembly, eight members of the London Assembly and 8,916 local councillors.

Liberal Democrats (UK) Political party in the United Kingdom

The Liberal Democrats are a liberal political party in the United Kingdom. It is currently led by Vince Cable. They have 11 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 96 members of the House of Lords, one member of the European Parliament, five Members of the Scottish Parliament and one member in the Welsh Assembly and London Assembly. At the height of its influence, the party formed a coalition government with the Conservative Party from 2010 to 2015 with its leader Nick Clegg serving as Deputy Prime Minister.

The Labour Party is a centre-left political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The party's platform emphasises greater state intervention, social justice and strengthening workers' rights.

Background

Before the election the Conservatives had exactly half of the seats with 18, compared to 10 for the Liberal Democrats, 5 Labour and 3 independents. [3] 36 candidates were standing for the 12 seats being contested with the Conservatives defending 7, Labour 2, independents 2 and Liberal Democrats 1. [3]

Election result

The results saw the Conservatives remain as the largest party with 18 of the 36 seats but without a majority. [4] They gained one seat in Tophill West which had been previously held by independent Steven Flew before he stood down at the election. [4] However the Conservatives lost another seat in Melcombe Regis to the Liberal Democrats, with the winning candidate Ray Banham returning to the council on which he had previously served for 10 years. [4] Ian James narrowly held Westham East ward for the Conservatives after having defected from the Liberal Democrats in 2008, while his wife Christine James held Westham North for the Liberal Democrats. Tophill

Tophill is a gently sloping area of land on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Rising from sea level at Portland Bill to 151 metres (495 ft) near HMP The Verne at its northern end, Tophill contains the villages of Easton, Weston, Southwell, the Grove and Wakeham. The lower northern end of the island is called Underhill.
