The Xiaohaituo Alpine Skiing Field, also known as the Chinese National Alpine Skiing Centre, is an alpine skiing resort in Yanqing District, a suburban district in northwest Beijing municipality, China. Opened in 2019, it is the planned venue for the alpine skiing events for the 2022 Winter Olympics. [1]

History

The centre was constructed as part of the Yanqing cluster of 2022 Winter Olympics venues, alongside the Xiaohaituo Bobsleigh and Luge Track. It opened in 2019. [1] It planned to host a FIS Alpine Ski World Cup meet in February 2020, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China. [2]

Facilities

The resort is located in a forest at an elevation of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft), [3] and is served by the Yanqing branch of the Beijing–Zhangjiakou intercity railway. [4] It has trails totaling 10 kilometres (6.2 mi), [3] including seven racing courses with inclines up to 68 degrees, among the steepest in the world. [1] [4] Its vertical drop is approximately 900 metres (3,000 ft), [4] the biggest of any ski area in the country. [3] The region has little natural snowfall, so most of the resort's snow is generated artificially. [3]

Beijing 2022 was a successful bid by Beijing, China and the Chinese Olympic Committee for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The IOC selected the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 31, 2015, which Beijing won.

Lviv bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics

Lviv 2022 was a bid by the city of Lviv and the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Lviv withdrew its bid on 30 June 2014. The IOC ultimately selected Beijing as the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 31 July 2015.

The Beijing Olympic Games Bidding Committee unveiled the venue layout plan for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games on 20 February 2014: five ice events will be held at the Olympic center, the Capital Indoor Stadium and the Beijing Wukesong Sports Center, which were some of the main venues of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Competitions for luge, bobsleigh and alpine skiing will be held in Xiaohaituo Mountain area northwest of Beijing, 90 kilometres away from the city centre of Beijing and 17.5 kilometres away from the town of Yanqing. All other skiing events will be held in Taizicheng Area in Chongli District, Zhangjiakou, 220 km (140 mi) from downtown Beijing and 130 km (81 mi) away from Xiaohaituo Mountain Area.

The Yanqing National Sliding Centre is a bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track that will be located in Yanqing District, a suburban district in Beijing. This venue will host the bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton events for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The venue is 16 curves with different angles and slopes.

Beijing–Zhangjiakou intercity railway High speed railway line in Hebei, China

The Beijing–Zhangjiakou intercity railway, also known as the Jingzhang intercity railway, Jingzhang high speed railway, Jingzhang section of Beijing-Baotou PDL, is a high-speed railway between Beijing and Zhangjiakou in Hebei province, China. The line was opened on 30 December 2019, and is the world's first driverless high speed railway, shortening the traveling time from Beijing to Zhangjiakou from 3 hours 7 minutes to 47 minutes. It forms part of both the Beijing–Lanzhou corridor and the Beijing–Zhangjiakou–Datong–Taiyuan branch of the Beijing–Kunming corridor.

Yanqing railway station

Yanqing railway station is the terminus of the Yanqing branch of the Line S2 of the Beijing Suburban Railway. Yanqing railway station was used as a freight station since 1983, and in 2003 it closed due to the fall of shipments. In 2008, the station finished its first renovation and resumed passenger services. From 2019, a new station hall began construction for the coming Winter Olympics. Since 1 December 2020, The new station hall as well as Yanqing branch of Beijing–Zhangjiakou intercity railway begin serve the station.

Luge at the 2022 Winter Olympics will be held at the Xiaohaituo Bobsleigh and Luge Track which is one of the Yanqing cluster venues. A total of four luge events will be held, between 4 and 10 February 2022.
