2011 Asian Athletics Championships

The 19th Asian Athletics Championships were held in Kobe, Japan between July 7–10, 2011 at the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium. The tournament had 507 athletes from forty Asian nations competing in the 42 track and field events over the four-day competition.

Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium (神戸総合運動公園ユニバー記念競技場) is a multi-purpose stadium in Kobe Sports Park, Suma-ku, Kobe, Japan. It is currently used mostly for soccer matches. The stadium holds 36,000 people. It was built in 1985 for the 1985 Summer Universiade. It hosted the 2006 61st National Sports Festival of Japan main stadium. Local football club Vissel Kobe play some high attendance matches at the stadium.

Iran competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. Mauritania competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which was held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its eighth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1984 Summer Olympics. The delegation included two track and field athletes, Jidou El Moctar and Aicha Fall, who were selected to the team by wildcard places, as the nation had no athletes that met either the "A" or "B" qualifying standards. Moctar was selected as flag bearer for the opening ceremony while a LOCOG Games Maker carried it for the closing ceremony. Neither of the two athletes progressed beyond the heats.
