Chicago is in the #5 position in the MLS Allocation Ranking. The allocation ranking is the mechanism used to determine which MLS club has first priority to acquire a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the league after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee. Chicago traded allocation ranking positions with Seattle Sounders FC on August 26, 2011, with Seattle gaining the #4 position and Chicago receiving the #6 position. [38] [39]
Chicago has 8 international roster spots. Each club in Major League Soccer is allocated 8 international roster spots, which can be traded. There have been no reported trades involving Chicago international roster spots for the 2011 season. There is no limit on the number of international slots on each club's roster. The remaining roster slots must belong to domestic players. For clubs based in the United States, a domestic player is either a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident (green card holder) or the holder of other special status (e.g., refugee or asylum status). [39]

It is believed Chicago maintains the MLS rights to Carlos Bocanegra, Wilman Conde, Freddie Ljungberg, and Chris Rolfe as each of these players declined contract offers by the club and signed overseas on free transfers.
Dasan Alexander Robinson is a retired American soccer player.
Dan Gargan is an American former professional soccer player who last played for LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer. He is the former color commentator for Atlanta United FC on Fox Sports South and Fox Sports Southeast. Currently, Gargan is the managing director of one of the best youth sports clubs in the midwest, Lou Fusz Athletic.
The 2010 Chicago Fire season was the club's 12th year of existence, their 13th season in Major League Soccer, and 13th consecutive year in the top-flight of American soccer.
The 2011 Portland Timbers season was the debut season for the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. As the fourth incarnation of a professional soccer club to bear the Portland Timbers name, the MLS version of the Timbers began the 25th season in club history with three games on the road due to ongoing renovations to Jeld-Wen Field.
The 2011 Seattle Sounders FC season was the club's third season in Major League Soccer, the United States' top-tier of professional soccer. It was the Sounders FC organization's third year of existence; including all previous clubs, it was the 31st season of a soccer team bearing the Sounders name.
The 2011 Colorado Rapids season was the club's seventeenth year of existence, as well as its sixteenth season in Major League Soccer, and its sixteenth consecutive season in the top-flight of American soccer.
The 2012 Real Salt Lake season was the team's eighth year of existence. The team's first game was on March 10 at the Home Depot Center against the Los Angeles Galaxy, which they won 3-1.
The 2012 Portland Timbers season was the 2nd season for the Portland Timbers in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight professional soccer league in the United States and Canada. The season ended with a 1–1 tie with San Jose on October 27, an MLS record of 8-10-16, and elimination from the MLS Cup at 8th place in the western conference and 17th in the overall MLS regular season standings. The Timbers won the 2012 Cascadia Cup with a record of 3-1-2 against Seattle and Vancouver. Including all previous teams in the area to bear the "Timbers" name, this is the 26th season in the history of the Portland Timbers franchise.
